Late Inning Blow Up Cost Mets A Win; Mets Lose 9-3

Game Summary

Chris Capuano pitches a great first six inning but the pitching and defense fell apart in the seventh. Bullpen continues to struggle. Offense didn’t provide much, but at least the homerless draught is over thanks to Big Red. Also, Reyes returns tomorrow. Mets lose game two to the Pirates 9-3

Game Notes

Chris Capuano started off with quite the great start with entering the seventh inning only giving up four hits and no runs allowed. Chris kept his pitch count down and had quite the defense behind him. However, the seventh inning, it looked like everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. Capuano gave up three straight no out infield singles, and a fourth straight hit with an RBI single going into center. The Mets defense, who were on fire tonight, seemed to just completely fell apart. Cap, Pagan, Murphy, and Harris all miss play a hit in the inning. Capuano was pulled once the first run was scored. Cap ended his start with 6+ innings pitched, 8 hits, 5 runs, one walk, and two strikeouts. Always tough to see a guy have one inning mess up a great, great start.

Pedro Beato came after Cap couldn’t record an out in the seventh. He pitched the seventh inning with two hits and two strikeouts. Next inning was not the same. He gave a hit, walk and three runs. What happened to the 0 ERA Beato? Mike O’Connor stepped in and immediately gave up two hits, a walk, and a run. He was taken out without recording an out. Dale Thayer pitched a scoreless two innings with only one hit.

The Mets offense didn’t have the same kind of game as the series opener. With being matched by hits with the Pirates, is just a sore sight for us fans. The Mets knocked in two runs after a 3.5 inning runless game, with a 2-run single from Tejada. Justin Turner ends Mets 10-game homerless streak with a solo homerun in the eighth.

Daniel Murphy, Ruben Tejada, and Carlos Beltran all had a multiple hit game, while Jason Bay had another 0-fer with 2 Ks.

Willie Harris had 3 K’s tonight and has one hit in his last 11 at-bats. Plus a couple poor plays in the defense. Anybody else been done with him for weeks now? I miss Ike :(

Angel Pagan continues with baserunning blunders with being caught off first, resulting in a caught stealing.

Turning Point

The seventh inning where both the Mets and the Pirates had a big turn around, but only one for the positive.

Game Ball

Chris Capuano, pre-seventh inning.

Up Next

Mike Pelfrey, and the return of Jose Reyes, matches against Paul Maholm and the Pirates. Game time is 1:10 PM on SNY.

  • Ok, clearly Willie Harris has ran his course with us.. I hate to say that about any player, but with the numbers he produces it is the only solution. Sandy hopefully disposes of him soon so that Nick Evans can actually stay in the MLB for longer than a week and so what he really can do. Think about it, he and Murphy platoon First, and Murphy handles Third when needed. Problem solved. Hopefully Sandy realizes this sooner rather than later.

  • Its De Ja Vu all over again!

  • Absolutely loving Terry Collins’ post game presser.

    • Beautiful. Quote of the night goes to Chris Carlin: “Wow, clearly a very agitated Terry Collins. We would like to apologize for the language.”

    • why? he been like this since day one and it has done nothing but make the mets into the worst fundamental team in history, when he promised the exact opposite. just more hot air. the mgr has made some of the worst moves i have ever seen, i guess when you have a career record under .500 this is what you get, just another bad move by the wilpons and company but at least you are happy, i guess when you dont care about winning the ws it easy to like garbage.

      • If you think THIS is the worst fundamental team in history – you better go back and hit the history books…….I recommend the late 70′s and early 60′s as a good starting point.

If you think Collins is the reason why the team is in the place it is right now, you better start with more then just history books.

        • Anybody can manage a team to 4th place and a sub .500 record. I realize u bow to a guy who has been fired and a loser at every stop but please wake up, when have the wilpons ever made the right move.

          • Right because I call you out for your idiotic comments that means I bow to the guy. Come back when you are a grown up and know something about the game.

  • Hopefully the post game rant by Terry opens up SA and his affection for Harris AND Hairston, is he still with us or wearing a Bobby V mustache?

Harris once again is over matched at the plate and for a player that was supposed to play 3b also he has been caught not thinking ahead or out of position. How many times do we need to see his down cast face to see he is not who SA thought he was.

Nothing personal but Harris and Hairston need to go, keep Evans and give him the at bats to see if he can play and maybe be used as a piece in a trade if needed but jacking him back and forth to AAA while Harris and Hairston take up space!

Two bad plays by Pagan and Carlos, sheesh, I thought they were our dependable OF’ers.

  • I know that BP has been bad but the fact that unless you use Izzy in 8th, who do you have so his arm doesn’t fall off cause he has been hittable for awhile and w/Bucholz down and Parnell not finding plate plus Beato all of a sudden lost who does Terry put in 8th inning.
Hey even our lefties can’t get other teams lefties out so match up plans are toast.

Sorry Terry but you were sold a bill of goods on this BP and it is now coming to fruition.
The fact that we aren’t scoring is a problem but with at least a good BP, as San Diego showed last year, you can win more close games than not but if BP stinks then….

  • The last straw for Harris has to be his throwing the Pirates under the bus in his post game interview:

‘No disrespect to the Pirates but I don’t think they’re much better than us right now’.

What? Did he actually watch the way the Pirates played that game tonight? I know I did and I certainly didn’t see the Pirates trying to hand the Mets the game.

Does Harris realize his own team has to play the Pirates again tomorrow afternoon?

    (smh)

  • It’s deja-vu all over again for the Mets, who blow the lead late and lose once again. Read all about it: http://tiny.cc/j5e0o
