Letting Reyes go would be the biggest mistake in franchise history.

This unfortunately is dead on balls accurate. Should have been thought of beforehand rather than just spending every thought, asset, resource on THIS YEAR.

ST a year ago while he was shut down with the Thyroid, yet had already shown he was recovered from the torn hamstring was the best time by far to approach him about an extension. With two years to get through healthy the guaranteed dollars would have looked an awful lot better than they do with 3 months to get through without injury.

The next best time would have been at the All Star break in 2010 but by then everything was in flux, Bay was already signed, the team was well on it's way to losing 70 M dollars. Then Alderson wanted to see for himself everything in the organization before making any long term committments. The way everything broke for us was really the worst possible way.

Failing to do anything this ST was a in hindsight a big mistake but as soon as I heard about the 7/140 for Crawford I knew we were in trouble. Reyes is better, younger, plays a more important position and is the most electrifying baseball player in NY since Willie Mays.

To see him in another teams uniform would really be the ultimate symbol of the utter incompetence of the Wilpon error and out of all the buffoonery associated with them through the years, will clearly be the thing they become most remembered for.

Ah well. While the NYY are adding Jeter, Posada, Rivera (and Petite?)'s numbers to their already impressive, though overdone, collection of past greats at least we have as many former Met players numbers retired as we do Dodgers. Of course we also have dedicated a fair percentage of our stadium to celebrating Dodger history so I guess that makes a certain amount of sense.

That will be the second lasting impression of the Wilpon error, letting Reyes go will be number one.

In fact, Pete (and others), I believe Parnell has the stuff closers are made of--in utero, so to speak.
What plans changed? Even if he had a plan to break the team up (which he never said), it is a long term plan with many things to consider, not just the last 2 months.
Hojo: I think in regards to both Beltran and KRod and I guess really Jose it depends on where this team is at around July 15. There is a 3 game set with Philly right out of the all-star break. If at that point they are still fighting themselves to stay above .500, then I think you gotta deal Frankie and Beltran.

If the offer on the table for Reyes is better than what 2 picks will net you, then you gotta consider it.

But first things first... if the Mets are proving that getting to or over .500 isn't going to be a daily struggle come All-Star break, then you gotta let it play out.

I would like to know if the proposed realignment to two divisions will affect contract talks and where players go. Maybe it has no bearing whatsover in upcoming trade and contract talks but if the teams know their is a realignment coming and they know or have an educated guess on their division rivals, it could impact their player decisions. What do you think?

Let me just say that Heyman is a total idiot. That said, Reyes is so much more valuable to a team than Carl Crawford is. He is a better player, AND he's younger, AND he plays SS. His deal will eclipse Crawford's by a great deal, just wait and see. If there is any kind of bidding war for his services, and there will be, his deal will be staggering.

Serious question (since I am not in the NY area), but does Jose do a lot of endorsements and ad work? I was under the impression that he did not do much, especially compared to what someone like Wright does.

beltran seems to do none though. some guys just want to keep a low profile (and I guess can live on their salary alone!)

Lots of good points and talk about creativity, I thought I read somewhere that the Mets still pay Bobby Bonilla 5 mil a year, You're right there are a thousand ways to be creative with a contract and I am sure Jose's agent will look at all of them. Itwould be tough to see hime in another uniform. I can't imagine Derek Jeter in another uniform or Chipper Jonrs not being with Atlanta?

Lets face facts folks...
Reyes is going to start off at Crawford money but in the end he is going to get as much as someone is stupid enough to offer, not based on his numbers.

His salary will be determined by how rediculous of an amount someone offers him. His stats may increase how high someone will go but the offer is hardly going to be based on any stats themselves. More on what they think someone else will offer Reyes.

He is going to make more than Crawford unless he loses a limb at this point.
The question you should ask is not how much he will get offerred but how much does he need to get to decide he wants to keep that promise of wanting to stay in NY!

He could get offered 5 Mil more per year to go elsewhere and still decide he likes it in NY and will play here for 5 Mil less. not a wise business move on his part unless he is counting on endorsements being in NY to make up for it, but stranger things have happened!

I actually agree that this is how he stays with the mets (creative contracting).

basically what Cliff Lee did last year to get himself back to the Phillies where he wanted to be all along.

some combination of deferrals, backloading, incentives, vesting options, etc. that way they can get jose his money (at least on paper), and it will "look" like the biggest deal, but structured to fit the Mets ST financial constraints.

heck, maybe tie team options for years 6-7 with a player opt out, if he is worried about them not competing (something like after 4 years, he can walk unless the team guarantees year 6, then same thing for year 5 and 7).

Lots of ways to make a deal work on both sides, when the player wants it to.

I agree with this. especially if he is continuing to be somewhat erratic, with diminished velocity.

they can find someone else to close. heck, last year when he went down, taka of all long shot options stepped in, and did probably a better job!
