Iam not of the school that thinks we should trade Beltran for any offer because he is leaving without compensation. But if we can get something decent (or better), that will be decent (or better) at the major league level, then it is wise to do so.

Once again, the financial situation with the team will be an issue here. Carlos has played extremely well so far and is once again a run producer. The team would be foolish not to be having preliminary talks to see if he would sign a 2 year deal to stay here at a more reasonable price. If Carlos thinks he is still worth 15 plus million a year he won’t get it here but he should be made a decent offer. Regardless, he has proved his skills have not diminished at the plate and a trade to an American League team would be the right thing for all involved if we get a decent return. To give him away would further indicate the serious nature of the Wilpon’s financial problems.

as funny as it sounds, it seems to me that somebody within the mets org is praying for some kind of losing streak to save face and cash…
beltran is the mets best player in the clutch, the real threat in the lineup, maybe the only true power hitter we’ve got and ppl keep leaking stories about him being wanted in dif places, is funny how noone mentions other hitters in bad teams link to certain places, i love beltran, why not give him the last run to complete what he was brought here to do and that’s compete for a chance at the playoffs? along with reyes and wright this will be the last time this 3 will play together, why not give them the “this is your last hurrah” sort of speech and let them play together.. i get it, the mets owner are broke and all, but i think, call me optimistic, that for some reason, there’s some magic to this team and we might do something this year noone expected coming into the year..

I have a sneaking suspicion that if we are two or three games out of the wild card at the deadline, and we keep our players, that we will instantly go on an 8 game losing streak and wind up kicking ourselves in the ass. It is the mets way. I am for treating this year like a reorganization year. I am happy they are overachieving and I have enjoyed watching this scrappy team. But deep down I do not believe they can win a Wild Card unless every other contender defers.

We are contending and it’s very serious. We are not 8 games out with 5 teams ahead of us. We are 4 1/2 out. We have 5 teams ahead of us but are within 1 1/2 games of 3 of them and can even be closer before the night’s over.

It is mind-boggling to me how many people can’t even give their own team credit.

And it’s honest credit because they ARE playing good and are playing better since our 5-13 start. If we played .500 ball during that 5-13 start we’d be about 2 games behind in WC. We are playing MUCH better now than before.

It’s very sad the attitudes of some people here. Everything has to be laid out for them, they can’t see what their own team is capable of

If we’re contending, then I’d be fine with not trading Beltran. But we need to be seriously contending, not something 8 games out with 5 teams ahead of us in the Wild Card, and pretending that we could make the playoffs if we win all the rest of our games.

I don’t understand the comments about how we should build around Reyes, Wright, and Beltran. We’ve had them for the past 5 years, won nothing, and Reyes is going to be looking to get paid like a superstar for the next 7 years, after about 3 months of superstar level play. Not a wise bet.

Texas wouldn’t even consider talking Martin Perez for Beltran for 2 months and no arb possibility but your right, Martin isn’t showing the ability to throw strikes.

The Dodgers are bankrupt (come to think of it so are the Wilpons) so cross them off the trade rumor list. Heck we might even get Francouer back for him. Do you now see how silly all theese trade talks are. Sportswriters have to make a living so they write this garbage to keep their jobs. Pretty sleazy if you ask me.

An extra 200,0000 people would bring in an additional 20 M which would pay one year of Reyes so that is a very credible point. It would also most likely not lead to anything all that great prospect wise so on that end there is a very good reason not to trade Beltran. If he were traded though that’s 6M right there

Joe Wieland RHP 21 years old in the Carolina League (A+) would be worth checking the Rangers level of interest though as would his teammate Mike Olt 3B 22 year old.

Right now GM’s are talking about guys and forming frameworks of trades they may be interested in doing later. You can’t determine who could get what unless your talking and just because you talked doesn’t mean you have to do anything.

My concern is that the Wilpon would be more concerned with saving salary (like with the Wagner trade and a million others like it) than with the actual potential on field payoff. Another concern is that while Daniels and Alderson may be talking who’s doing the minor league scouting? Right now is a good time to begin picking up some good pieces for the future. That’s how the Braves got Smoltz and the Astros Bagwell but if we’re not scouting well, looking to dump salary first and foremost and maybe losing talent like Reyes what good would it do us.

Maniac mentioned that we STILL have no advance scouting at the Major League level so if that’s true what about the minors?

It would be pretty tough to win the wild card without Beltran. Especially with the news now with Ike Davis.

If we are gonna make the playoffs, we are going to need Reyes, Wright and Beltran all here, and we need them all hitting.

Trading Beltran doesn’t necessarily mean we have given up on the season. We can still trade Beltran and compete while keeping and eye and focus on future runs.

Think about it. If our lineup could to that good WITHOUT two of our best power hitters, how good would our lineup be WITH them?

That’s why you keep Reyes because with him, and everybody healthy, that’s a dangerous lineup. Not just for this year, but for the next year, the year after, and so on, and so on.

Not many NL teams have four hitters like Reyes, Wright, Davis, and Beltran in their lineup, and three of those guys are still young.

The Mets aren’t going to trade him being 4.5 games out of the wild card – It’s not gonna happen.

Did anyone see during the game yesterday that the Mets were 3rd in the NL in RS per game since may 20th(or whatever the exact date was)? I think that’s amazing considering we done that WITHOUT Wright and Davis.

and we are going to get Wright back soon also. We were(i think) 1st in BA, 1st in OB%, and last in HR’s during that time frame – So if get Wright back hitting for power, that’s going to be a really good lineup – I think possible we can win the wild card if that happens.

Not much in the Texas system that excites me.

Martin Perez has a lot of Oliver Perez in him. I think Mets would be getting a deal centered around a marginal prospect like Mike Kirkman or something…which is pretty lackluster.
