Hey speaking of the AS game me might have 6 Yankees starting on that team, most of them on the wrong side of 30, but Yankee fans as obnoxious as they get at least come out and vote for their players, deservedly or not.

Met fans can vote in Jose as a starter and with the exposure that Jose is getting now in the national media he should move past Rollins, I can’t believe that Philly has more fans than Mets and we would allow them to vote in or come in 2nd, an over the hill slowing down SS that is past his prime? Come on Metsies, you can sit home in PJ’s and vote 25 times on the net, how hard is that if you really want Jose to start in AS game.

Jose has shown this season that he has matured because despite the past he is more mature now, he knows what NY is about and how to handle media so he is having the type of year that his caliber should be having in his prime years.

I’ve always been a proponent of letting the fan vote secure the player a roster spot, and that’s all. After the manager fills out the roster, then he can choose the starting lineup. So when Tulo wins the vote, he’s insured of a roster spot. Then when Bochy picks Reyes, he can start him. Same with Cabrera in the AL at SS.

So how come it’s ok to complain about where the budget should be “because it’s NY” but it’s silly to complain about how many All Star votes Reyes should have “because it’s NY.” Not the mention the small fact that Reyes actually deserves it.

Forget about NYC for a minute, because it’s impossible to tell how many are Yankee fans. Just Long Island is nearly double the population of Denver and Philly COMBINED. Fans like to complain, but they don’t DO anything about it.

with the way he’s playing now, yes.

He’s already making a lot of money, so it’s not like if we sign him to a huge contract that it will increase the payroll that much. We have the Perez, Castillo, and Beltran contracts ending this year, so do the math, we have PLENTY of money to sign him.

He’s 28 years old, no injuries this year, and last year had no problems at all with his legs, so I wouldn’t be worried about any injuries, and besides he never should have missed that much time in 2009 anyway – that injury was mishandled by the Mets, he never should have played in that game against the Dodgers.

I think it’s very possible that he can hit over .300 for the next 7 years – He’s laying off bad pitches out of the strike zone, which was always a problem for him, and for the most part, he’s stoped poping balls up, and stoped trying to hit HR’s – He’s hitting line drives all over the place. His .346 average is for real, it’s not a fluke.

and if he does lose some speed towards the end of the contract, guess what? He’s still very vaulable because there are very few SS that can hit like him. oh and when reyes loses some speed, he’ll still be a lot faster than most mlb players.

and did I mention he’s the perfect player for Citi Feild? he hit 11 triples so far, 10 of them were hit at Citi Feild – He’s on pace for almost 30 triples – The MLB record for triples in a season is 36.

i am sure we vote for him as much, but the stupid fans all over the USA are in love with troy overratedwitzky, for some reason he leads the SS position in votes.. i mean, look at the leaders in vote in the all star, do you agree that every year the fans make the right vote? look at past history of players who were picked who not only didn’t deserve to start in the game but let alone being in it:
victorino, werth, molina, beltran, wright, jeter,etc.. the list goes on man..

Beltran can say it all he wants and fans can sit behind their keyboard on top of their very high soapboxes and cry, “Gee willikers, I sure would be sore if that Reyes signs with another team” but the reality is, fans just want something to complain about and they can’t even show him enough to vote him into the All-Star game.

All this crap from the soapboxers about how it’s New York and it’s no excuse to have a payroll a shade under the gross national debt, yet the Mets couldn’t sell out a Phillies game without the help of Phillies fans. Get to a ballgame, put the disposable income into the team and see what the added revenue can do for the team.

In the meantime, vote for Reyes for the All-Star game and actually show people that New York likes the guy a little. You don’t even have to go to a game to do that.

This was always the risk going in. That he’d have a career year and dramatically increase the $$$ coming his way. Its always a risk with having a player in his walk year and then potentially having to vie with other teams to retain his services.

I wanted them to sign Jose during the offseason. But I do to a certain degree understand Sandy wanting to see the players himself before making any huge financial commitments. And as much as I would have loved it right now if they had Jose signed, I think it would have been also somewhat silly if the basis on whether or not they signed him to some huge deal would just be him getting through ST and a couple weeks of the season without hurting himself.

This man is the MVP of the national league in my opinion.. he’s playing the game at such high level is not even funny. he’s carrying the group of unknown mets to play even better, what he’s doing for this team with all the injuries is amazing!!
kudos for collins for not messing with him and letting him be jose reyes. not what everyone else wanted him to be

Sorry Kranepool7 but I gotta go ahead and sort of disagree with you. First, Jose made it clear he did not want to negotiate during the season to cause a distraction. Then, there are two things wrong with your way of thinking. One is the “hear and read” these “asinine things from the geek squad,” that usually has no attribution or direct sources. Mostly, these quotes are from speculative hysterical fans or beat writers who are trying to increase page views and sell papers. Not once has Jose Reyes come out and said “I want Carl Crawford money.” He’s been the silent one this whole time letting his play talk. With all this money coming off the books next year (Beltran, K-Rod potentially being traded, etc) the mets payroll should theoretically be able to handle something like Jose’s salary (I believe the catch all is that Reyes will want years, which I can understand being a road block). Next is – how do you know exactly what Alderson will do? No one knows! He’s never worked in a large market and has had a shoestring budget. Here, he may not. New York, despite what the Wilpons are doing with themselves (I predict they are no longer owners by 2013) and the team, is too big to fail. If MLB can approve a loan for the Rangers (a bankrupt team in a smaller market) for them to take on cliff Lee during the pennant race, they’ll approve anything to keep a star. Alderson has never worked with a larger payroll but has an idea of what they will need to succeed. Furthermore, this team has not succeeded with a large payroll in the past. I’m looking forward to someone who will invest wisely.

I think the “hey! LOOK! the Sky is falling!!!” mentality of fans is what’s causing this mass panic of “OMG THE METS WON’T SIGN JOSE REYES!!!!” when we have no idea what the future will hold.

So does that mean that its Jose’s failed “leadership” and not Wright’s that is the cause of these disappointing last 5 years? The media and fans love to talk about how the team player “leadership” issues is tied to the collapses, the underachievement, etc and Wright has gotten a bulk of the blame for that. Should we have been blaming Jose instead if he is to be considered the “leader”?

The “leadership” angle is pretty silly IMO. Jose is playing the best ball of his life. He’s been pretty great at other times over the years, Beltran’s been great at times, Wright has been great at times. The idea that Yankees fans and some in the media (though not really the NY media most of them have been very high on Jose) portray that Jose is too selfish, showy is ridiculous. But Mets fans who constantly put down their teams best players are even worse.

After Reyes went through all of spring training and then got off to his hot start all through April, I thought the Mets would have signed him. I figured they were just making sure he was eally healthy. But now its mid June and Reyes is still unsigned and his value continues to skyrocket. I hear and read these asinine thing from the geek squad that say if he wants over $100 million let him go. And what scares me is that is exactly what Alderson will do.

One of the silent realities about Reyes is HE has been the leader on this Met team for years. Unfortunately, the media has their agendas and who THEY want to see as their leader. Wright has never been good enough to be that person. Jose Reyes has always led by example with his hustle and attitude. The Pro-Yankee media in this town sends the wrong message about Jose. That’s their problem. Met fans shouldn’t be stupid enough to pay that nonsense any mind.

Jose absolutely needs to be re-signed. He’s been the best player in the NL this year. It would be silly to let him walk over a few million. An no offense to Ruben Tejada, he might make a fine everyday 2b for this team, but he won’t replace Jose. I don’t really see the need for the knock on Wright though…it seems like every Mets fan feels the need to dig at one of the stars to praise the other. This year Reyes has been absolutely incredible, but Wright has has some legitimately great years too and was a more productive player than Reyes just about every other season, and the team did hold its own for awhile back in 2009 when Reyes was out (only falling apart when Beltran went down and the pitching staff imploded). And right now even despite Reyes’ MVP type start to the year the Mets are more “mediocre” than “good”.

I’d hope going forward ownership of this team signs Reyes, keeps Wright, keeps some of young guys and then adds to them with some other accomplished players so we’re not all sitting here acting like being within a game of .500 is some great baseball.
