Bullpen Blows Mets Comeback, Brewers Walk-Off With 7-6 Win

Game Summary

Mets fought it out till the very end, but the bullpen just…well sucks. Great start by Pelfrey with six innings and only four hits, and nice job by Ronny Paulino who led the offense tonight. Mets lose with their first walk-off loss of the season, 7-6 to Brewers.

Game Notes

Mike Pelfrey with another good start tonight. Pelf allowed only four hits and made just one big mistake, a fastball down the middle to Fielder who hit another homerun to give the Brewers the lead. Pelfrey went six good innings before being pulled for a pinch hitter. Pelf also racked up two Ks and no walks in the game.

The bullpen was depleted today as five relievers were used tonight with lackluster efforts. Five runs were given up in a combined effort in 2.1 innings pitched. Another bullpen implosion.

The offense fell silent until the eighth inning rolled in and both teams started hitting. Beltran, Reyes, and Tejada all had a double with Reyes and Pagan each having a stolen base. Reyes now has a 12 game hit-streak. Still not Carl Crawford.

Ronny Paulino stole the show for the Mets (Fielder stole the whole show though). Paulino went 4-4 with his first homerun of the season and three RBIs.

Jason Bay 0-3. 0-last-23. Sigh.

Nick Evans 0-3, 2 K. Camp town ladies sing this song, DUDA, DUDA!

Once more bad calls plague ML baseball.

Turning Point

Ninth inning, that dreaded Nyjer Morgan with a walk-off hit.

Game Ball

Ronny Paulino. Impressive showing.

  • Yes, we lost, but the Brewers won it as opposed to us throwing it away. I can live with this.

Miller magic strikes as the Brewers steal back one that the Mets were about to steal. Read all about it at Midwestern Met: http://tiny.cc/qny63

  • Why is Fielder so comfortable against Mets?
He came into series hot, hitting HR and yet on one pushed him off plate after at least 1st HR?
Met pitchers have a history of not moving batters off plate so they comfortable and take their wacks.

I know that Beato started this mess but sheesh Izzy has turned into a batting practice machine.
If he is supposed to be our 8th inning guy yet you can only pitch him so many games/pitches then who is your back up to this insane BP rotation?

When I saw Izzy come in, I saw HR all over his pitches, didn’t even move Prince away from plate.

Beato is officially now a has been, maybe feel good Rule 5 pick who fooled us all with those scoreless innings and now his velocity is gone, only 2 months into season, come on.

Once again Bay goes down with runners on base, Ground Hog Day for Bay and Mets.

4 game winning streak, one game under .500 all gone, feels like Yankee series when we were that one win away from .500 and BP blew it and haven’t got close till tonight, another repeat affair for BP.

Terry has no other options when you bring in your supposed 8th inning guy to just get 2 outs and he gives up another HR, what can he do.

I don’t think Izzy is making it to end of season and Mets will have nightmares of the season when Billy was bad, then hurt and BP was using someone named Tony Ayala from Expos to close games, what is wrong with this picture again.

There is little SA or Terry can do, there are no other arms to bring up unless Parnell discovers his control and off speed pitches, sheesh, what a bummer night after a great 8th inning explosion.

  • Well it is obvious to me that Isringhausen is good but he needs someone else we can go to in the 8th on days where he needs it. Beato can’t take the ball everyday as well.

It was supposed to be Parnell in the 8th but he seems still out of sorts

Since we have been in games late we have relied too heavily on them and we may be asking too much for guys like Jason and Beato to handle an inning most every day.

Beato has already broke down once because of it and jason seems to be a very different pitcher when he gets too much work.

Acosta hasn’t been to steady, OConnor got a shot and pretty much failed, Thayer is getting his shot but from what I saw tonite he will never be a 7th or 8th inning guy with that control. Maybe he is better than that we will see.

Our starters are going 6 or 7 innings now so it’s not like we are taxing the pen due to low innings, it’s just that we have those two maybe three guys who get the job done in tough situations and too many tough situations (3 Run lead or less) to give them the rest they need to be effective.

The rest of the pen can only be trusted with football type leads cause they can give up runs wholesale.

Maybe we should hold off on Beato until the 8th from now on and take chances with the others in the 7th. but it gets difficult to fight back only to have to fight more because what you got was given away in the next half inning.

They can’t win them all and give Minny it’s due tonite. We can win the series tomorrow with Niese and really that is all that matters.

  • Collins is an ape. With the score 6-4, he allows the best player on Milwaukee to tie the game with a base open. Stupid managing. The proper move is to WALK Fielder. NEVER allow the team’s best player to cause damage in the 8th inning of a game you’re winning. Stupid decision by a manager who was labeled a dumb ass 10 years ago. It’s the #1 reason this FOOL was run out of his last job by his own players. The man is a certified idiot.

    • So he should walk Fielder and pitch to the winning run instead of the tying run?

      • YES!!!! don’t you know baseball or match ups?????? fielder is an rbi machine and a lefty, corey hart strikes out a lot and the chances are better, also, who follow after hart? the 0 for 27 mcgee.. so know your baseball b4 writing something>?

      • METSIE- You’re retarded if you think it’s smart baseball to allow the best player on the opposing team to beat you. Learn baseball. Who cares about the “winning run” when it’s an INFERIOR hitter behind Fielder. You not only avoid Fielder, but you set up the double play as well…SMH @ anyone questioning walking Fielder after the BOMB he already hit against Pelfrey in the same goddamned game..

        • I agree. You dont pitch to Fielder. You dont let Fielder beat you. Especially when he’s already hit two homers off of you already.

  • is a shame we could’ve had at least 5 or 6 wins more, but our bullpen who is put together by has beens, minor league contract players and rule 5 pick up, older guys who will be good for 1 week keep blowing games for us, i don’t wanna hear that crap about how the brewers won it, WE LOST the game, when you demoralized a team like we did the brewers in the 8th you dont lose that game, collins lost this game to me… you have to walk fielder and pitch to corey hart (who’s got only 14 rbi’s) and live with the consequences, is a shame jose’s MVP season is been overshadow with this bad team…
what do ppl expect of our bullpen? is not that good, we didn’t spend on it, so is more of a “let’s see who overachieves for us” type of bullpen, than a good one..
also, look, i like beato, but he reminds me of igarashi last year, he was unhittable when he came at first, had that injury on his hamstring and all of the sudden, he never was the same.. i see the same type of pattern with beato..

  • dave 31
great point on evans, to me he sucks!!!! but trust me, duda may be ON FIRE at triple A, but as soon as you bring him up i am sure this guy will for get how to hit!!

    • Alex, do you think Bay turned a corner last night?

      • nooooo, but i swear to god i rather see bay at LF than duda anywhere, they both going to strike out or suck at the plate, but at least bay will play some so so defense.. have you seen duda play the OF? he looks lost!

        • Duda’s natural position happens to be 1B. Do you have any problems with him replacing the slugging Nick Evans at first?

  • Last night’s loss was just devastating. I got home from work just in time to see Paulino smack the bomb.

Whooped it up, made a drink, got some chips…I was just ecstatic to think we were going to beat baseball’s hottest team and guarantee a series win in enemy territory.

Then Collins decided he’d go w/ a similar order he had used the night before but one inning later to get six outs. I didn’t understand why you bring Izzy in w/ runners already on, but, obviously, Beato didn’t have the clean efficiency of Tuesday. I get the idea that COllins doesn’t want to overtire Izzy, but Holy Sh(%! is he the 8th inning guy or what!!

The thought crossed my mind that maybe K-Rod could come in to get five outs, but is it too much to ask?

Izzy has been good, but I keep thinking Parnell is a better alternate if–a big if–he throws strike. A 98 MPH FB might have been just the ticket for Fielder. Brush his big butt back, and then a fireball challenge. Not too many hitters will catch up to Parny’s smoke. Alternatively, Parnell could have pitched him high and away or high and tight, and if he doesn’ swing then you have the walk many others called for.

WHat a miserable loss. Hitters did what they had to do–er, minus the hapless Jason Bay.
That mustachioed guy had loss written all over him in the ninth.

Nyjer Morgan…what was that arrow crap in the dugout. He’s a hateable anti-Met now. Would be good to see a little nastiness in the Mets tonight. There is a very annoying cockiness on that Brewers team–a little too much gloating.

Tonight will be a mission nearly impossible against Gallardo who ha pitched very well against us. Niese will basically have to throw a flawless game for at least seven. Our goal must be at least three runs. If we’d just won yesterday, all of this pressure would have been off.

Jason Bay: I want to support you, buddy, how ’bout breaking out of the sewer tonight!!!
