Subway Series Notes: Mets Derailed In The Bronx

What started out with a big 2-1 win over the Yankees on Friday night to kick-off the Subway Series, took a turn for the worse on Saturday when an ineffective Chris Capuano let up four homers in a 7-3 loss. Then things completely unraveled today when Mike Pelfrey had one of his classic meltdowns on the mound in what turned out to be a huge eight run inning for the Bronx Bombers who beat the Mets 9-3. Pelfrey’s line was 6 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 HR, 1 HBP. The outing raised his ERA to 5.37 and his record now stands at 3-4.
Terry Collins told reporters that his team was incapable of competing in a slugfest with the Yankees. He was right, good call Terry.
While all that was going on, there was some news and notes that you may have missed. Rather than flooding the site with a series of individual posts, I thought I would just summarize them all here instead.
Angel Flies To Puerto Rico
Before the game today, Collins spoke with reporters at Yankee Stadium and said that he expects center fielder Angel Pagan to return sometime this week. Pagan was expected to play a couple of games for Triple-A Buffalo to finish his rehabilitation assignment, but instead flew to Puerto Rico to attend to a personal family matter instead. No word on what day he is expected to be activated.
Thole Losing Grip As Starting Catcher
Josh Thole is mired in a season long slump that can only be described as a train wreck. In the last six weeks, he has a .172 average, a .245 on-base percentage and a .204 slugging percentage. Over his last 31 games, he has recorded three extra-base hits. Over his last 17 games, he has one. This morning, Terry Collins said that he plans to give Ronny Paulino a string of consecutive starts at the position, and that he will give Thole time to clear his head and work on his swing. For now, Thole is no longer the Mets starting catcher.
Ike Davis Is Swimming, Not Running
Davis, a first baseman, has begun fielding ground balls and taking swings in Port St. Lucie, Fla., but he has not yet run on his sprained left ankle. Manager Terry Collins said that he doesn’t expect Davis to play in any rehab games, but the first baseman isn’t likely to play until a few days after he can come off the 15-day disabled list on Thursday. He has been working mostly in the pool.
Turner’s Streak Ended
Second baseman Justin Turner‘s streak of consecutive games with an RBI ended at seven. Justin Turner’s single on Saturday, stretched his RBI streak to seven straight games, leapfrogging Ron Swoboda (1965) for the Mets’ rookie record. “It’s pretty neat,” Turner said. “It’s cool to be in the book until the next guy does it.”
Footloose
The Mets are concerned with Daniel Murphy’s footwork at first base, believing he comes off the bag too early. Murphy got the benefit of a key blown call Thursday when he clearly was pulled off the bag on a wide throw. Terry Collins spoke with infield coach Chip Hale on the way to Yankee Stadium for Saturday’s game about tightening up his footwork. “If it’s going around that he’s coming off the bag early, we’ve got to correct it,” Collins said.
The Mets will have a day off on Monday and get some time off to lick their wounds before heading to Wrigley Field for the start of three-game series with the Chicago Cubs.

3-1 game with head case Pelfrey on the mound and this genius of a manager isn’t ready to pull him???? Pelfrey acts like an 8 year old after single he misses and Collins doesn’t know to pull him? Gues what Terry…Just because you declared him an ace in the Winter doesnt make him one. and your defensive I was right about everything routine in the post game was a joke. you gave up 8 runs. Your moves wewren’t so hot. You sound more like a fast talking Manuel every day.
Pelfrey never was and never will be an ace. I wouldn’t trust him in a big game even if we had a 5 run lead. He’ll soon be 28 and having his hand out for an $8 million dollar contract in arbitration. I say trade him.
Pelfrey doesn’t have the guts for being an ace! The fortitude of aces was seen in pitchers like Tom Seaver, Sandy Koufax, Dave Stewart, Ron Guidry, Bob Gibson, Ferguson Jenkins, Pedro Martinez, Tom Glavine, and others who go out and get the job done! Yeah, I’m going old school but you knew that they were determined on the mound and pitched to that effect.
#Yankees erupt for 8-run 7th to bury the #Mets in the #Subway_Series. Read all about it at Midwestern Met: http://tiny.cc/w46oh
That picture above describes everyone’s reaction that had to watch that 7th inning. Collins should’ve yanked Pelfrey from the game after Gardner led off with that hit in the 7th. I was fine with Pelfrey getting 6 solid innings. Where the hell was Willie Harris when the bases were loaded for A-Roid? Right there, it should’ve been an inning ending double play that would’ve at least preserved a tied game. Then again, it didn’t help matters that we left a ton on base just like we have throughout this series. I’m so glad I didn’t really stick around to watch this 8-run debacle.
I have no complaint with Collins work so far but I have to hang some of this on him. Pelfrey looked surprised he got out of every inning today. H clearly caves mentally against good teams like the Phoils, Braves and Yanks. You get 6 good from him against a team like this, just genuflect, bless yourself, and pick up the bullen phone. The BP has been saving their bacon anyway.
Continuing the Mets trend to not hit with RISP doesn’t help when you have your B team playing and Pelf’s bad placement of that pitch to Cervallis.
Take that bunt and maybe you get Jeter out but until Mike learns to handle pressure in late inning situations cause until he does then there will be less trust in him from his team mats and Collins.
Hey Bay got a hit but there was no one in scoring position so big deal.
This was a tough loss to take for me, especially with Mike working his way out of some major jams but that walk then the HBP was the back breaker for his psychie.
Sarge, it doesn’t matter if the Mets put their A, B, C, or D team on the field, they can’t get it done with RISP for whatever reason.
Is it possible that Pelfrey’s real role should be in the bullpen as a Long Reliever. It seems to me he can’t go past 5 innings and he is NOT a starter. Also I am glad Ronny Paulino will get starts as a catcher. I like Thole and he’ll get out of his hitting funk.Congrats Justin Turner on your rookie RBI Met record. Nice to have something positive come from the subway series. PS: A great big prayer for a full recovery for “The Kid” Gary Carter. we luv ya!
I heard at least three different recaps on the Mets game on SNY and WFAN, and I read a few recaps, and if I hear or read one more idiot say that Pelfrey was spectacular or dominant through the first six innings I think I will puke. Pelfrey was in trouble in all six innings. He had baserunners in every inning. He was lucky he even lasted five innings today. The guy is an absolute disaster.
Pelfrey did a classic Pelfrey. A grounder through his legs into CF and he’s all through. That hit totally undid him as he was incapable of focusing after that. Too bad his sports psychologist died earlier this year as Pelf’s career went up in smoke with that. Also too bad that this team couldn’t afford a Santana replacement after he went to surgery. We’re doomed until such time as we get an owner who gives a crap other than lining his pocket with fan’s money.
