Mets Player Updates On Ike Davis, Johan Santana, Angel Pagan

Angel Pagan is close to returning and manager Terry Collins expects him to be activated from the disabled list in time for the start of the weekend series against Philadelphia on Friday. Pagan, who is recovering from an oblique strain, went 1-for-3 in a rehab game for St. Lucie on Monday, and is expected to play for Triple-A Buffalo on Thursday and the Mets Friday. After last night’s game, Sandy Alderson said that David Wright (stress fracture in lower back) met as [...]

Beltran Could Make It Tough On Mets

I never really weighed in on Fred Wilpon’s New Yorker interview yesterday, and I don’t really intend to go into it except to say I was most turned off by the owner mocking Carlos Beltran’s 2006 NLCS strikeout against Adam Wainwright. Wow… Et tu, Brute? It read like something Mike from Toms River would say calling into WFAN. And if you think this boorish behavior from a team owner doesn’t bother a player, think again. “It surprised [...]

Mets GM Responds To Owner’s Comments

After Tuesday night’s 11-1 loss to the Cubs, Mets GM Sandy Alderson spoke with reporters and mostly discussed the comments made by Fred Wilpon in interviews with both Sports Illustrated and the New Yorker this week. “I think everyone was surprised by the comments. But there’s nobody who is more passionate about the Mets, has more empathy for the players, than Fred. I think that we all get caught up in the emotion from time to time and [...]

Not Again…Bay Leaves Game With Calf Injury

Left fielder Jason Bay left tonight’s game against the Cubs in the seventh inniing with a stiff right calf. Bay was replaced by Fernando Martinez and while It was unclear when the injury occurred, he pulled because the weather in Chicago was very cold and it was a lop-sided game. Apparently, Bay told manager Terry Collins about the problem before the game. “We were running around, shagging fly balls in BP today, and just had some very, very, very minor [...]

Wilpon to SI: Mets are “Bleeding Cash”

Fred Wilpon is back in the headlines once again.  Just a day after his controversial comments toward Jose Reyes, David Wright, and Carlos Beltran, Fred Wilpon opens up about the Mets financial troubles in a new article for Sports Illustrated written by Tom Verducci.  In the article, Fred Wilpon tells Verducci that the Mets are “bleeding cash”.  Wilpon added that the Mets could lose up $70 Million this year.   The Mets principal owner said that he could raise [...]

My Take On Mark Cuban’s, Oops I Mean Fred Wilpon’s Comments

Wilpon’s comments made yesterday were basically true, it is just that it should not be said by the owner. I believe Joel Sherman summed it up perfectly in saying that: The reality is that Wilpon had Wright defined ideally: Great kid, but no superstar player. But that truth should be left for people like me to tell. It is simply ungrateful sounding from this owner. What went through Wilpon’s brain when he made these comments? [...]

$100 Million Men: A Look Back

Yesterday our own Craig Lerner posted a quote from WFAN’s Mike Francesa about Jose Reyes which was  “Jose Reyes sat right there in that chair and looked me in the eye and told me he was looking for the same deal Carl Crawford signed. He sat right there in that chair. He said it on the air loud and clear, that he expects to get paid like Carl Crawford. This isn’t speculation, this isn’t from some [...]

Dragging Out The Inevitable?

Michael O’Keefe of the Daily News reported that the upcoming edition of Sports Illustrated will feature more comments from Mets owner Fred Wilpon, this time elaborating on some of the issues he is dealing with regarding the sale of the team and the clawback lawsuit. In the SI article, Wilpon reportedly admits that if he loses the lawsuit filed by trustee Irving Picard, he will be forced to sell all of his stake in the team. He [...]

Taking a Deeper Look at Fred Wilpon’s Comments About the Mets

Most of the talk about Fred Wilpon’s comments to The New Yorker has been about what he has said about the players. However, Wilpon said much more than that and it is important that the whole story, both his comments about Reyes, Wright, and Beltran as well as the rest of the story is addressed. It has long been known that Jackie Robinson has been a personal hero of Wilpon’s, so much so that they [...]
