Not Again…Bay Leaves Game With Calf Injury

Left fielder Jason Bay left tonight’s game against the Cubs in the seventh inniing with a stiff right calf.

Bay was replaced by Fernando Martinez and while It was unclear when the injury occurred, he pulled because the weather in Chicago was very cold and it was a lop-sided game.

Apparently, Bay told manager Terry Collins about the problem before the game.

“We were running around, shagging fly balls in BP today, and just had some very, very, very minor tightness in the calf,” Bay said. “I told the trainers before the game, warmed it up, put a sleeve on it, and it felt good. And TC was aware of it. It was really a nonissue.”

Jason Bay has been a total bust at the plate this season, batting .227 with 8 RBI in 97 AB, after a season to forget in 2010.

Bay said he would be back in the lineup Wednesday, but he seems to be a lot more fragile than anyone ever expected since joining the Mets, so we’ll see if he really does play tomorrow.

  • Mets crushed, on field and in spirit. Read all about the massacre and get the Outsider’s (and consensus) Opinion: http://tiny.cc/347md

  • Bay is a bust. If only we could trade him at the deadline and free money to keep Reyes.

    • I hate to say it, but Reyes will be gone in the next 30 days if Fred has it his way. Yes, Bay is a complete bust. Only way the Mets will rid themselves of this piece of trash is if they eat a portion of his contract to a contender.

    • Last year guys like you were writing about what a bust Reyes is.

      • No one was writing about Reyes being a bust last year. When you come up to the Majors and put up the kind of season that he did in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 no one is going to be attatching bust next to your name.

        • Well Tag, not that I agree with what Dennis is peddling but you have to admit that when Reyes missed time with his Oblique is the time everyone started talking about getting rid of Reyes via trade…

Crawford’s deal only increased that talk.

If I’m not mistaken (and I could be!) you yourself cited NOT SIGNING Reyes before Crawford got signed as a mistake. Think you said it cost us a couple of Mil.

You may be correct there but at the time the GM was FIRED, the team was looking at the FO not the players and it could be said the rush to get rid of Omar caused that mistake, not Omar himself!

Reyes probably will get Crawford money in fact will probably get more because Boras will use Crawford as his base number. Will Fred be wrong about what he said about Reyes? Only if Reyes is still Reyes by the time the contract is done!

He’s not going to get it from Fred…
But MAYBE thats because the fans seem so intent on blaming HIM for the signing of high priced Veterans who have been called failures because they got hurt or had a decline during the time they were under contract and he really is sick of being the most reviled person associated with the highest paid 5-13 team in baseball when he said that!

When you blame the guy trying to entertain you for:
          1 – Spending too much
2 – Paying too much for often injured players
3 – Using FA instead of the draft to build

He is going to come to the conclusion that to PLEASE the fans he needs to do what they WANT Which was to:
          Fire Omar
Hire Alderson (King of Moneyball SUCCESS!)
Don’t make any big name FA purchases
Let Reyes walk to hoarde Draft picks not even entertaining the idea he might be worth that money.
(Soon) trading anyone who IS performing in the name of hoarding even MORE kids that may never be as good as even ONE of the guys we traded away!

Fred at 5-13 wanted to show people he was as much a fan of the team as the rest of us. He did that by saying (at the time) what all of us were THINKING and SAYING at the time!

5-13, Scrap it all, Wipe the Slate, Start Over! No we won’t spend money to do it! Keep Ike!

As they say folks…Be careful what you wish for!

          • Well Metsie I am sure that by 2010 Omar was totally under ownerships wrap and spent all he had just for 2010. He couldn’t have been expected to think long range with the pressure he was under. One last double down, try to break even. It was his only chance.

But the Wilpon is the one who put him in that situation. If there not setting record attendance marks they want to know why not. If they are, they want to do anything to keep them going. Kind of like the returns from their brokerage accounts.

If the Wilpon goes whole hog in the other direction it wouldn’t surprise me in the least. They have to date been totally unable to hire a GM who does both (except Mcilvaine who they short circuited. No. No relation LOL)

Boston knows they can’t win it every year, that’s why they pick up three extra draft choices every year AND a free agent AND a big trade. Not just a trade or a FA. Something for today AND something for tomorrow.

When young players come up here they don’t know the difference between NY and anywhere else. It’s the older established expensive veteran type that needs a year or so to fit in. Reyes isn’t old. Reyes fit in from day one.

Shying away from resigning your own in their prime FA who has been to All Star games because other teams past their prime former All Stars disapointed here would be just like the Wilpon.

Connect A to Z and arrive at F.

The Wilpon has to accept that the reason for the dismal results is that they have focused entirely too much attention on this years ticket sales, public perception, weasealy attacks on people and unsermining those who fall out of favor and not enough on building a team for the long term.

Reyes would be a great bridge to that team and after 5 more years here still be a terrific player, long term veteran just dying to get a ring and provide the type of leadership at 33 that the Wilpon’s have failed to deliver in 23 years.

They should be harpooned for building the worst team money can buy part 1 and part 2. They should also be harpooned for doing the same yet again. It’s under their ownership that we have crashed 3 times in exactly the same manner, and for exactly the same reasons.

Now if they would just stay out of it we might have a chance. As it is their only making things worse. And that’s saying something.

            • “Well Metsie I am sure that by 2010 Omar was totally under ownerships wrap and spent all he had just for 2010.”

              Correct but WHY?

Would it be because everyone was bitching about the Delgado, Martinez, Beltran, Wagner, Alou, Castillo, Santana and Perez contracts that were guys who were hurt over the last three years and blamed for being BAD DEALS because they all got hurt?

I mean he spent on the players he was told would win him a WS. Willingly! They got within one AB of the WS and the guy who got paid the most struck out looking!

The other guys were supposed to put us over the top and most were not there when the TOP was up for grabs.
Pedro missed the end of the season, Santana too, Beltran in 2009, Castillo and Delgado multiple times during the year…

You BELIEVE not spending is the way to go your blaming Fred for agreeing with you now?
He had already lived through his TRUE Steinbrenner play once with the Coleman/Bonilla team. So he came to his senses a little too late.

I love the fact that both polar sides of this team (Buy/Build) all blame the Wilpons for the things they hate. Some hate the Wilpons because they don’t have the money to pay and the other side complain that he pays!

CAN”T WIN situation if ever there was one!

I don’t particularly like the Wilpons but I also don’t blame them for what we have done or said.

“Boston knows they can’t win it every year, that’s why they pick up three extra draft choices every year AND a free agent AND a big trade. Not just a trade or a FA. Something for today AND something for tomorrow.”

Is that because of their owners or their GM?
And tell me this…Theo got signed in 2004. They WON in 2004!
How much of that team and farm he won with was ACTUALLY his?
Pedroia picked in 2nd round of 2004 didn’t help that team win anything until 2007!

He signed Flaherty Snow, Tavarez and Timlin.

So how much of the 2004 win was ACTUALLY Theo’s GRAND DESIGN?
No pick in the first round of 2002, In 2003 the RS picked David Murphy, Never played a game for Boston was traded for a relief pitcher Gagne.
Got Elsbury for letting Cabrera go And gave up his own first for Renteria (Hmm what would you say if Omar did that?)

So please I know you guys think Theo is a genous but he has been to and won 2 WS in 2 Appearances over the course of 9 years. It’s better than what the Mets done but not even CLOSE to what the Yankees their main rivals to beat to even GET to the WS have done!

And for that Theo is considered a Sabermetric genius!
2004 had VERY LITTLE to do with Theo’s philosophy, and more to do with Duquette! The guy who hired him in the first place. It was mostly Duquette’s team when Thoe took over and won the first one and it was making ONE good pick in his very first draft that helped him get 2007 and thats about it!

He is also the guy who gave Crawford all that money for a guy who is hitting zip right now and making it hard to sign Reyes to a reasonable contract for what he is worth!

If we don’t re-sign Reyes and it’s because he gets Crawford money it won’t be the fault of Wilpon it will be Theo’s spending that caused Reyes to cost too much!

  • I would rather see Martinez or someone else (not Hairston) at this point. Bay is NOT giving us anything.

  • I so couldn’t care less about Bay; he gives nothing to this team. I had such expectations for him but a few weeks ago. He’s mediocre to the core. Go on the DL Bay, and let’s see what the Jr. Mets can do.

    • Bay should be the FIRST guy they trade and even if they only get Partial Salary relief plus a player it will be worth it!

Unfortunatly Carlos wasn’t around when Bay got here. Wright was the big guy on the team!
David had an issue where the FENCES got into his head. And psychosis is contagious!

If Beltran was around Bay wouldn’t have had all those close moments with David Wright and might not have focused on the same fences (demons) that Wright does and might have hit for average! I know they think it is harder to hit HRs in Citifield but they don’t hit them ANYWHERE!
