My Take On Mark Cuban’s, Oops I Mean Fred Wilpon’s Comments

Wilpon’s comments made yesterday were basically true, it is just that it should not be said by the owner. I believe Joel Sherman summed it up perfectly in saying that:

The reality is that Wilpon had Wright defined ideally: Great kid, but no superstar player. But that truth should be left for people like me to tell. It is simply ungrateful sounding from this owner.

What went through Wilpon’s brain when he made these comments? Did he think anything positive would come out of this?

If the owner is saying that his players are worthless why should any other team think that they are worth acquiring?

The only thing that Wilpon got dead on in my eyes was referring to himself as a schmuck. The only thing that could have come out of this was to piss the players and the fan base off; and guess what? Mission Accomplished.

If baseball is so against having Mark Cuban as an owner, why are we allowing Wilpon to act just like him?

Wilpon’s comments such as “Shitty team”, “Lousy ballclub” and “Snakebitten” were completely uncalled for and hopefully out of anger from the 5-13 start to the season. But if they were premeditated, then Wilpon really needs to put his wrinkly foot in his mouth because if he wants to know one of the big reasons why we are “snakebitten”, then he should look in the mirror.

After such unprofessional comments, why would anyone want to play for an owner that just bitches and moans through the hard times and blames everyone else.

The team is only two games under .500 in late May, a lot of season left, and coming into such an uncertain year, I would say they do not deserve such comments based on their performance.

Fred, theres no crying in baseball, so shut up and sell the team if you don’t like it, you would be doing the franchise a big solid.

  • Does every single person who writes on this site really have to blog about the Wilpon comments? Wilpon’s comments are not a surprise. It’s not a surprise that Wilpon is not going to resign Reyes. It’s not a surprise that the Wilpon’s first priority is getting their rehabilitating their family finances at the expense of the New York Mets. It’s not a surprise that Met ownership has chosen not to be competitive for the next 3-5 yrs. Anyone with half a brain saw this coming back in late November and into the winter meetings.

    • Not true lifelong. There are too many posters on this site jumping up and down that all the money saved on contracts after this season would make for a new great team. The kool aide was drunk by at least 75% of this site.

      • ???? Do people really think the Wilpon’s will invest the money from Beltran and Reyes’s contract into signing talent? Come on.. No way people are that dumb.

  • I have to be honest. What I’m tired of hearing is how Fred Wilpon’s comments suddenly will shape other teams opinions of a player’s worth. I really am.

Do the people that subscribe to this theory think for 1 second that teams are looking for Fred Wilpon’s view on players to guide their decision process?

Will it create a potential for a low-ball initial trade offer? Possibly. Will it create a potential for a phone call to Sandy from other GMs?

    Bingo.

Look, he was wrong to say it how he did, but what he said is no big secret in MLB. It’s not as though everybody around the league has looked at David Wright since after 2008 as a superstar and now suddenly change their mind.

It’s not like everybody doesn’t know Beltran earned his contract because of the Houston series.

How long have people been saying Wilpon doesn’t care about the team and yada yada, and now he opens his mouth, gives a perspective as a fan and we kill him for it.

    • The thing is, jessep, he is not a fan. Unfortunately for the Mets, he’s the owner and what he said to the media cannot be excused away.

      • Mary: He’s not a fan? Why not?

        • It doesn’t matter if he’s a fan. He’s stillan owner. He goes on this interview tour looking for sympathy and all he does is show once again why the Mets are a joke. It didn’t start with Omat or Manuel or Willie or Duquette. It starts with the dodger loving owner. Anyone who buys tickets is just helping to keep this letch in charge. New ownership can’t do any worse.

      • Yeah how did it work out for George? Pretty good whenever he did that didn’t it?

    • And Jessep, it affects others opinions because Fred now made it appear that the Mets won’t sign him. So now it looks in their eyes as if we MUST trade him. Taking leverage away from Alderson.

And Wilpon doesn’t need to call the team “shitty”, insult players and use the media to mope and groan in order to show he cares.

      • Very well said. I absolutely agree.

      • Clayton, are you telling me people around the league thought the Mets would or could sign Reyes given their financial mess?

        • So Alderson has been lying all this time about signing him if he shows he can play?

          • He said we’ll see how he plays. So you’re getting on Wilpon for saying Reyes won’t get $ but now wanna get on Alderson for letting people think they’d sign him?

  • I don’t think his comments will affect anyone’s view of these players. However, after minimizing these players value in such a public fashion…I’m sure Alderson’s phone has been ringing off the hook by other GMs wanting to acquire these players at a lower price, since Wilpon, essentially, announced he does not feel that Wright, Reyes, and Beltran are worth a tremendous return. How can The Met’s actually decline an offer for being too low when these players, in the words of the owner, are injury prone, 65-70% of what they were, and just a good player. Another poor business decision by a man who is becoming more and more known for making poor business decisions. Idiot.

    • Tell how minimized reyes is when it comes around to Contract time…

Nothing Fred decreased reyes’ value to the team. If anything all it did what decrease the value reyes is going to get offerred because they know they won’t have to beat our bid!

Which is just the thing you WANT the entire league to think before you try and resign someone!

    • It affects the Reyes situation. Now Gms believe, if they didnt already that the Mets HAVE to trade Reyes because Wilpon makes it sound like he did not see them signing him.

It takes leverage away from Alderson in trade talks.

  • Wilpon’s comments are going to lessen the trade value or contract value of any of the players he mentioned. What if Wilpon had said Reyes was the best shortstop in the game? Does that now make Reyes a $200 million dollar player? Of course not. No GM in his right mind values a player based on some unqualified comments by a team owner, especially an owner who is 75 years old and has fallen and cant get up.

    • With Reyes it makes it look like they arent going to sign him so that we HAVE to trade him which takes away Alderson’s leverage from other GMs

      • We don’t have to trade him!!! Why would we when we will get two first round picks for letting him sign somewhere else?

any one of those two picks are likely to be better players than all three you get in trade combined!

Albeit at the cost of what Reyes gets you now!

        • I understand the draft pick options but if you can get a haul of prospects for Reyes, why not try it.

And I’d like to see Reyes kept but if he can’t I would rather see him traded for prospects IF the deal is good enough. if not then I would agree with you and trust DePodesta’s drafting skills with one first round and a supplementry pick.

          • Hey Clayton think of it like this…Where are the BEST Apples? In the pre picked bin at the supermrket or the TREE they grew on?

Does the team you intend to trade reyes have two 1st round picks to give you in return? If they do why? Is it because those players are not all they expected them to be?

Why take 3 guys from a LIMITED list of 40 when you can get two of the best players out of a selection of 1000s!

We do not have to TRADE Reyes! We do not have to do anything but offer arbitration to get those picks.

And it is THOSE PICKS that are more likely to reduce the amount of money Reyes gets offerred than anything Fred said!

            • I do not disagree with you, But if we can get a deal anywhere near what the Padres got for A-Gone, I wouldn’t hesitate.

On the other hand we have DePodesta as our new scouting director. So the more picks for him to work with the better.

              • A-Gone wasnt a rental.

                • He had one year left at the time before his extension. He was techniqually a rental.

  • Mets crushed, on field and in spirit. Read all about the massacre and get the Outsider’s (and consensus) Opinion: http://tiny.cc/347md

  • Wright went 29 and 103 ribbys last year.Just in games i watched i saw him lose 11 home runs to the dimensions at Fred the Schmuck Field that would have been homers at Shea.Let’s do the math.40 homeruns and about 120 ribbys.Correct me if i’m wrong, but those are superstar numbers
