Mets/Giants Trade Brewing?
****UPDATE**** – link to story - http://stlucietoflushing.com/?p=380
******************************************************************************
In a post I have going up over at StlucieToFlushing.com, I detail a possible trade that could be happening between the Mets and Giants for Jose Reyes.
In past days the Giants have made a few moves following the season-ending injury to star C Buster Posey. They have called up top prospects such as Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford.
Belt, who we saw briefly the beginning of the year, is the San Francisco Giants best prospect. He is mainly a 1B though many people believe he can handle corner OF spots as well. Possibly a Beltran replacement in RF? The Giants don’t even intend to start him either. He will come off bench in SF. Possible showcasing?
Crawford, arguably the Giants best SS prospect, was called up and made his debut last night. He would go on to hit a grand-slam in his first major league game. He was hitting. .322 3 HR and 15 RBI in Single-A. He was advanced past AA and AAA one would think because of 1. his age – 24 and 2. He may be getting a showcase for a future trade.
This could all lead up to a possible Reyes trade come June/July. The post will go up either today or tomorrow. I plan to update this post with the link when it comes out.

Fontenot went on the DL, isn’t that why they called up Crawford (who’s not a Spring chicken at 24)? I thought one of Belt’s biggest strength’s was his defense at first base, seems odd that a team would consider him as an outfielder. This seems like reach and I definitely hope it’s not a deal NY would look at for Reyes. If we want a first basemen who can hit to go play RF when Beltran leave’s we can just call up Duda.
Except Duda can’t really hit big league pitching but yea… I don’t think you’re getting Brandon Belt to move him to RF.
I don’t think the trade is happening either but you know, Ike Davis could easily play RF. Davis did play OF for the USA National team.
Lifelong: Another thing you’re not gonna see. You only move a good fielding 1B away from 1B if you have an absolute star at 1B already or the guy is old.
Scary thought at Citi—–as slow as he is. He does have the arm, though.
I’m not really sold on the idea of acquiring a prospect like Belt just to move him to RF, a position he’s played 16 times in his professional career. Heck he’s played the OF 26 times. Doesn’t really make sense to me. If you’re getting Belt, you’re doing it because you want a young 2B.
I don’t really see this as much of anything to be honest. The Giants need a middle of the order guy and a catcher to replace Posey. Not Jose Reyes
This sounds more like a fishing expedition than actual trade possibility.
If they already have a top SS prospect why would they trade him for Reyes?
And we have F-Mart and Kirk to play OF. Why would we get a 1B/OF? Especially with Davis on the team?
There is no sense in getting a 2B if your losing Reyes to get it. What would be the point in that?
All you would be doing is trading a very good SS for a MOR 2B!
If your going to trade Reyes or Beltran it makes much more sense to get pitching not just cheap fill ins for the guys you traded.
I agree with you about the logic, but this is the Mets and cheap fill-in’s is what the Moneyball guy is all about.
Again…you don’t understand what moneyball WAS so why do you reference it here? Sandy Alderson is not a “moneyball guy”
No one Cheaper than F-Mart….
In fact one of the key helps to installing moneyball is to have a lot of high priced FAs ready to walk so you can collect picks for them which is why Reyes is probably not going to be traded but kept, offered arbitration, and allowed to walk if the price is too high.
They collect Picks and select from the 1000′s of players in the draft instead of the 100 or so kids on the team we eventually would trade with.
Now that doesn’t mean if that happens we are playing Moneyball, it’s just the smart way to go in the case of reyes.
Only one we should be trading for Players is Beltran. We get no picks for him if he leaves anyway and if we wanted to resign him for the right price we still can if he gets lowball offers in FA.
Bay would be a good Trade to make, Get something for him and a reduction of what we owe by paying some of it but not ALL of it…
Ike Davis is probably the only NO TRADE on the team at this point.
Wright comes up next year into much the same situation Reyes is in now. Again you don’t trade in that situation it’s better to offer arbitration, reduce the price on him and if not get more FRESH picks.
What happens there will depend largely on what happens with Reyes and our Pitching situation.
This team as is (even with Beltran) would be ok if it was healthy and had Pitching. Same could be said about 2010,2009,2008,2007 and 2006!
So I say any trades we make should go after Pitching not position.
We can DRAFT for position with whatever picks we earn from salary reduction or buy or trade for it once we have a rotation worth spending money on!
Just do the Beltran trade in reverse!
Metsie: I’d evacuate anything thoughts in your mind of Fmart making any impact with this franchise and Kirk hasn’t shown any big league talent yet except having a name Mets fans can enjoy.
They need youthful talent at every position EXCEPT 1B probably.
True or not jessup you have to face the fact that F-Mart is going to be playing where Betran was once he is traded!
And no matter how you slice it no matter who you trade they are NOT going to have the same impact as Beltran. If Impact is important you probably don’t trade Beltran!
Your not going to get impact in the trade either!
Trading a really good IMPACT player at one position will never net you more IMPACT in the two you get back.
What this team needs is Pitching. We have decent fill ins for just about every position BUT SS!
It all starts with Pitching and if you get that it is easy to buy Impact on the Market. Even trade for it!
So basically whatever you will get from F-Mart is about the same as what your going to get from the trade!
It’s a 6 month rental! You get quantity not impact when thats what your selling especially since the price to retain is pretty much set already.
Why would the Giants trade either prospect for Reyes? The Giants aren’t going to sign Reyes to a long term deal? Why would they give up an impact shortsop that is going to cost them very little over the next several years for another impact shortstop who will cost them $$$$$ to sign? I just don’t see it. Reyes is going to be a “rent-a-player” type. I’d LOVE the Giants to take Reyes for either the shortstop or 1st base prospect they have but I just don’t see it happening.
Still think Reyes is going to the Red Sox for Marco Scrutaro/Jed Lowery and two prospects. Red Sox easily take the eastern division and win the World Series. Reyes becomes a free agent. Next year the Red Sox start their prized shortstop prospect Jose Iquelsious(sp)
teams that are close by short a pieve (in this case the Giants) make trades like this to win another WS title while they have the opportunity staring at them. It is not always about focusing on future controllable cheap talent (at least, not just that).
the idea of having a loaded farm system is not just to have guys to call up to keep rebuilding your core, but also to have extras to trade for the missing ML piece to make a run at the title.
If would be giving Jose away. The Mets need to get more than two prospects. If they make that trade they the Wilpons need to just sell the Mets outright. They need to get out of Baseball ownership. They are at a point that they are doing more harm than Good for the Mets.
The Mets have the pieces to be a fair Team but the present owners are screwing with the organizational mind Top to bottom. So NY Giants you want Jose Reyes you need to add three other players to the Mix Jose with go crazy in SF you can count on a few inside the park home run during the rest of the season triple about 30 more. He will add a lot to you team and fill the stands.
How’s that for a headline: “Mets Trade Reyes for Two Guys Named Brandon”. Stick with Jose.
It’s deja vu all over again as the Mets bullpen blows the lead and the game. Read all about it at Midwestern Met: http://tiny.cc/21feb
Mr yoel if you want people to take you seriously you need a better means of showcasing a guy than to say they are going to showcase him on the bench. What you thenk, the Mets scouts will report of he’s wearing his pants high or low?
I don’t know why they are benching him..horrible managing IMO on the Giants part…he needs regular AB’s
All this is speculative B.S.
Jose will be a Met for life…well at least until the end of his next contract.
Keep Jose….trade Wilpon and Katz….and and an owner to be named later….Jeff.
Well you know if you’re going to trade him it won’t be a team within your division. The Giants could be borrowing him for the rest of the year and then he could still be a Yankee next year.
For the record I still think Reyes will be a Met in 2012…this is all speculation after recent moves by Giants…
If the Mets trade Jose to S.F why wouldnt they be asking for Zach Wheeler??? The Mets need pitching not outfielders. Also Tejada can handle Short till another comes along.
