Mets Gambled On Young And Rolled Snake Eyes
Considering how it began, you have to be satisfied with the Mets’ six-game homestand against the Giants and Dodgers. A split was about as good as could be expected, and that’s what the Mets got.
Perhaps the most significant development coming out of the homestand was Chris Young’s second appointment to the disabled list. He was a gamble signing to begin with, so this really can’t be looked at as a surprise. The Mets are just fortunate that they’ve received good pitching from Dillon Gee.
The Mets already said Young won’t be activated when he’s eligible to come off the disabled and this makes me wonder if we’ll ever see him again. With his injury history, it is a legitimate question.
No, Young wasn’t ever going to be a stud starter in the Mets’ rotation, but as a gamble you take what you can get and they got 24 innings.

Typical….If it were a Minays sign, you’d be blasting him up and down the article. But its the Alderson guy so its merely a gamble.
Omar apologist……….
Did Sandy hypnotize you, or are you so incapable of thinking for yourself that you accept every utterance from those in charge because your hapless brain has no alternatice? Is it a good thing to brain dead? Oh wait, you have to ask he powers that be before you can answer.
24 innings from Chris Young > the last 2 years of Oliver PErez
What is wrong with you, you’re blabbing about something that makes NO sense, and you say Sandy hypnotized me and I’m incapable of thinking for myself (funny those exact words verbatim from a few different names here – who would have thunk that?)
Brain dead? Are you kidding or just talking about yourself again? If you can’t tell the difference between a free spending guy that would throw tons of money on has beens and a guy that has NO budget to work with and has the job for a few months, well then you just described yourself.
Get a clue dude really.
I guess we’ll hear how Minaya would have been blasted every time a signing that doesn’t work out under Alderson. We’ll just have to get use to it. Facts are with the checkbook locked away for good right now we’re going to have plenty of these out on a limb pickups.
With unlimited funds at his disposal tell me who did Omar sign that didn’t get hurt. Pedro?, El-Duque? Alou? Wagner? Bay? Castillo? Beltran? K-Rod? I’ll tell you who didn’t get hurt. Livan, Sosa, Redding, Perez, Lawrence. Those guys didn’t get hurt they just got cut right out of here.
perez did too get hurt. and spent a lot of time on the DL.
Dennis:
Show me where Omar was blasted when he first was hired as GM of the Mets?
If I’m not mistaken, Omar wasn’t “blasted” until he failed to fix the holes in 2007, 2008 etc.
So, I find it funny how Alderson has to clean up the mess that Omar left and he gets a few months before you get on him, yet Omar inherited a good foundation and was given a pass for a few years.
Presumptuous to write Young off for the season, it’s only May. There’s plenty of time left to get some value out of him; everyone knew he’d have at least a couple of DL stints. Btw, Young wasn’t even much of a gamble, only cost $1m base. Sometimes you really do get what you pay for.
Good comment and tells it like it is. For 1 mil. he is worth it. (compare him with Ollie’s 36 mil flushed away-by the way where is Ollie now?)
DK you are dead on! Forget Sandy vs. Omar, we all knew this was a low risk ($1 mil) high reward type gamble and it is still very early in the season. I wish everyone would just relax and let things play out. Besides it does open up a slot to see what a prospect can do and isn’t everyone’s complaint that we don’t always give our prospects a fair shake.
Title should read Mets gambled on Sandy Alderson and rolled snake eyes, otherwise spot on. Young is dead in the water.
There’s no low risk, high reward for the Mets. If the Mets were to have ANY chance at WC competion they have no room for error so just about everything they do, especially with pitching is high risk. This signing was anything but low risk and I’m not talking about money, i’m talking about what it means relative to our season – it’s definitely high risk. He very well could’ve been our best starter this year and now he may be gone.
It’s a shame Young only lasted this long and now it sounds like there may be a good chance he may not come back at all. I’m not going to waste my time getting into some of the debates I see a few are having since it’s been all said before.
I will only add that in my opinion Young was always seen as a short term move for this year only that in the end looks like it won’t pan out if indeed Young is lost for the season.
The Bigger concern is getting Pelfrey and Dickey going and the continued growth of Niese.
Lets Go Mets!!!
Gee has the stuff to be a good MLBer. Let’s hope his forced era begins with a bang. If we can make it through May being at or near .500, it will be a real success.
When the hell does Jason Bay show up?!!!
