Bullpen Falters Late In 5-2 Loss To Phillies
Game Summary
With Pelfrey’s best and longest start going into the eighth inning, the Mets looked to beat their rivals, but the implosion of the bullpen and the faltering of Mets late-inning runs, cost him a win. Mets lose 5-2.
Game Notes
Mike Pelfrey pitched like he was finally back in form. Pelfrey kept the Phillies to just one run till he found himself in trouble in the eighth after Rollins got a base hit and a stolen base. Pelfrey was pulled after 7.2 innings giving up two runs on four hits, no walks, and six strikeouts. He went further into the game as I expected as he pitched 116 pitches. He walks away with a no decision and his ERA sits at a high 5.00.
The bullpen only had to get one out prevent the Phillies from tying it up. Rollins was on second when Pelfrey left and Mike O’Connor was brought in to face the lefty, Utley, but he got an RBI single up the middle. O’Connor fails to get his one out. Izzy came in to get the out, but just walked Polanco, his only batter. Izzy was pulled and Tim Byrdak was put in. He quickly gave up an RBI double to Howard, giving the Phillies the lead.He gave up a hit, but struck out the next batter. Thayer was brought in and pitched an inning, but gave up two hits and another run to add to the Phillies lead.
Mets offense got two runs early but were non existing in the late innings. With another RBI single coming from Justin Turner in the first inning and Jason Bay took time out from striking out to get an RBI in the third inning.
Jose Reyes two hits, double, two runs, two stolen bases. Continues his good season.
Nick Evans goes 0-3, still looking for his first hit of the season.
Mets strikeout 11 times in the game, and walked none. Paulino had a throwing error as well.
Turning Point
Eighth inning where the bullpen imploded.
Game Ball
Mike Pelfrey had a great start today. Too bad he couldn’t get his win.

How come Terry didnt say any thing to Pagan for the caught stealing third base. Murphy was given the riot act. If Pagan had stayed at 2nd, when Tejada hit the single we would have had 3 runs instead of 2
How do you know he didn’t?
God, they are starting to suck bad!
Starting? When did they ever stop sucking! (I was trying to come up with something clever to say, but this team is so depressing it leaves me numb.) I will say that if Einhorn paid 25% for this bunch of losers I would start questioning his financial credentials.) Oh Lord, it isn’t even June yet!
Einhorn is a smart business man and knows to look at this investment far beyond how they are playing today, hence he’s a very rich man and we are posting our opinions on a blg.
It’s deja vu all over again as the Mets bullpen blows the lead and the game. Read all about it at Midwestern Met: http://tiny.cc/21feb
Yeah agreed, but does this money making entrepreneur have the patience to wait the Wilpons out? There is no doubt in my mind he’ll have this team in three years but will the franchise be so underwater will he still want it knowing he may have to pour in 500 million more to cover new debts and rebvuild. Maybe 500 mil won’t even do it. After all as currently configured the Mets are not a viable competitive MLB franchise.
Einhorn will simply bide his team and allow the Wilpons to bury themselves deeper. The handwriting is on the wall. This will be his team within 3 years and the Wilpon era will be a thing of the past. The Mets will then have an owner with the mental and financial capability of turning the team around. And count on it, no dopey interviews will be forthcoming from Einhorn. He will play it slick and quietly move Fred aside when Fred is at the end of his rope.
Yeah, Lou you’re right. I just keep hoping against
Hope that somehow they pitch and hit and gel,
And that we play competitive BB. sigh!
I hope that if the Wilpon lawyer’s see that they would probably lose the billion dollae Madoff suit by the trustee, Picard, they may make a deal with Picard to settle and approach Einhorn with a deal to get the money for a settlement for the team with a little extra for themselves. The more I think about this the more I think this may be the reason Wilpons made a deal with Einhorn. They need someone with deep prockets. On your other point I don’t see the Mets playing competitive ball. If anything they are moving in the other direction and must be the laughing stock when teams see them on the schedule.
