National League’s Best Lineup?
1. Reyes 2. Murphy 3. Wright 4. Beltran 5. Bay 6. Davis
Best lineup in the NL? That’s what Rich Couthino says in a post for WFAN.
I surely got your attention with that headline — but it’s not as far-fetched as it sounds.
New York’s lineup is the biggest reason why the Mets are in the midst of a 5-game winning streak. They have the ability to not only score runs early, but tack on runs late. Think about the pressure that’s taken off their bullpen.
Back in spring training, Terry Collins and I had a conversation during one of Carlos Beltran’s many batting practice sessions. The Mets manager laid it out for me in simple terms: “Is there a better group of five hitters in the league than Reyes, Wright, Beltran, Bay and Davis? I don’t think so, and if we’re healthy we’ll be as good as any offense in the league.”
The lineup is certainly deep and will only get better once Pagan returns and Paulino replaces Nickeas later this week.

against crappy pitching we look good, let’s see if they can perform that way against a good team with good pitching.
Oh please! It’s not even the best in the NL East.
At this moment, The Mets have the best 1-6 in the NL. When the Phillies, Brewers and Cardinals are back to full health…than you might have an argument. But right now…no contest. Look at the teams, and look at the stats…Mets got the best 1-6 at this very moment.
It’s not the best but it did have a good week.
We finally have three guys batting over .300 If we get one or two more and they can maintain that then you might be able to say they are ONE of the best.
The best lineup? No. A great lineup? No. A lineup with a great future? No.
This happens every year whenever we play a couple of bad teams, fans start thinking we have the best this and the best that.
Tell me how great this lineup is on August 1st when you have Pagan, Murphy, Wright, Bay, Ike, Thole, Pridie, Tejada.
Tell me how good the lineup does against Halladay and Lee this weekend. Then we’ll talk.
Why have that horrendous attitude?
What’s wrong with Reyes leading off? So far he’s having a good year, is healthy and I don’t see why it’ can’t continue
- Murphy is doing much better than I ever though batting 2nd, right now he’s making the top of the order look strong and appears to work well with Reyes and may keep the 2nd spot when Pagan returns
- Beltran is swinging the bat as good as he ever has with the Mets. His mechanics are sound and Citi Field took 2 HRs away from him otherwise he’ had 5 on his way to a 30 HR season…there’s even been some great plays made on some balls he hit. I’d say he’s good for 25 HRs and looks healthy
- Bay is off to a good start. You think he’s gonna falter? Maybe. He may also return to his old from and start pulling the ball and hitting HRs again. He just might.
- I’m not his biggest fan and I think he should hit 6th in the lineup but he’s still a guy who’s gonna hit 30 HRs and around .300
- Ike Davis is a beast. He could be a 35-40 HR guy THIS YEAR and his HUGE in big spots. The guys with the good numbers who develop a knack for big hits are the ones who become stars. This is gonna be interesting to watch
- When Pagan comes back he may bat 7th in my opinion. He was arguably our best player last year, i’ll take it
- Nothing wrong with Thole hitting 8th
What’s your problem with that lineup. Still need some tweaks to bench but I’d go to war ANY SEASOn with that lineup.
The problem is we need PITCHING, PITCHING, PITCHING and the Front office should keep supplying us with arms whenever they get the opportunity.
Yes I’ll take that lineup in to do battle agains Roy Halladay as well. Let’ see it they grow to be even better.
Let’s get some pitching and drop this trade talk. We should be talking about getting better to contend for wild card, not dismantling a SOLID LINEUP
type – i forgot to add David Wright’s name to the sentence after Jason Bay – that’s who i mean there.
You missed his qualifier of August 1st. He is assuming that Beltran and Reyes are traded by the deadline, and you will have pridie and tejada replacing them.
I didn’t miss it but if we’re in contention i hope those 2 are not going anywhere. Maybe if the Mets are contending than maybe Reyes will sign here for less. I can imagine this being Beltran’s last season here no matter what though but if we’re in contention he’s not gonna be traded at the trading deadline.
You might not think much of the D-Backs but they just took two from the Phillies!
If we can beat the D-Backs and the D-Backs can beat the Phillies then we too can beat the Phillies which is really all you need to do to win this division!
I find it mildly funny that the claim is the “NL’s best lineup” but then fails to mention 7, 8 hitters.
The problem with the top of the lineup is individually they all have talent, but they are hardly ever all together healthy and or playing at the top of their game together.
The only player in that entire lineup I’m fairly confident in, in a big spot is Ike Davis.
You can’t have the league’s best lineup if you have no confidence in them.
Before the season started the organization put on the team many potentials that had injuries, and or good past potentials on the team. And in time that had to be sorted out, so the players will either be on, or not on team.
The team had a bad start when the season started. But in the last week or so they seem to be putting it all together.
Could be part of sorting it out, along with the trying to hard did not work out for them when they started the season. But right now they seem to be calmed and collective, and ready to go.
And now (except for Pagan) they have every player there that is needed to go all the way. And that includes the hitting, pitching, pen, and not the bench, yet, because that is not good enough.
If we are just talking 1-6…um, have we forgotten about the Colorado lineup that just recently raped the Mets at Citifield, not Coors:
Fowler – .273 BA/.387 OBP
Herrera – .317 BA/.442 OBP
Tulowitzki – .326 BA/ 7 HR/ 1.090 OPS
Gonzalez – off to a slow start, but we know he is a stud
Helton – .317 BA/3 HR/.911 OPS
Smith – .303 BA/.545 SLG/.897 OPS
Oh yeah, the Cardinals are pretty good too:
Freese – .333 BA/.364 OBP
Theriot – .311 BA/.361 OBP
Pujols – 7 HR…it’s Pujols, ’nuff said.
Holliday – .407 BA/1.148 OPS
Berkman – .378 BA/6 HR/1.162 OPS
Rasmus – .315 BA/.901 OPS
Both teams have better table setters then the Mets and 3-6 are as strong, if not stronger than the Mets. Lets not get too big for our britches, after 5 wins in a row over the mighty Astros, Diamondbacks, and Nationals.
Fowler and Herrera and Freese and Theriot aren’t better than Reyes and Pagan/Murphy.
Reyes is my favorite Met…I love that guy…but, strictly looking at it as comparing lead off hitters…Freese is a career .300 hitter with a .360 OBP. With Fowler, he is a big time strikeout guy, but he is also over .350 career OBP, and as a leadoff hitter, the only goal is to get on base as much as possible for the big boys. As for Murphy in comparison to Theriot and Herrera, Murphy has more pop, but both of those guys have higher career BA’s and OBP’s, which is also more important for a #2 hitter, than having power…and, on an unrelated fielding note…I don’t think any Met fan would rather have Murphy on 2B over the other 2 guys.
.350 OB% is what Reyes usually gets. Last year it was low because he wasn’t playing 100%. And Jose gives you more power and speed, and a better average than Fowler.
Theriot doesn’t even close to the hitter Reyes is – It’s not close at all.
and look at Herrera’s minor league numbers. He’s not that good, he’s off to a good start this year, but that’s in only 18 games, he’s gonna cool off soon. I’d much rather have Pagan/Murphy than Herrera.
Herrera’s minor league numbers? I guess if we are comparing minor league numbers, Reyes only batted .276 and .269 in AA and AAA. Nonsense. In half a MLB season last year, Herrera batted .284 with a .352 OBP, and that has carried over into this season…Remember, Pagan has only played about a season and a half for the Mets, and last season his BA, OBP, and SLG all decreased, not too mention, he goes on the DL every year. Saying Theriot “doesn’t even come close to the hitter Reyes is,” is simply a misguided quote. Theriot is a career .285 hitter with a .348 career OBP as opposed to Reyes who is a career .286/.335 hitter. Seems pretty comparable. Theriot also makes better contact…striking out over 75 times in a season just once, whereas Reyes has eclipsed that total 4 times. Power numbers and speed is no comparison, Reyes is better. Like I said, I love Reyes…but to make a statement saying the Mets have the best lineup in the NL…you actually have to form a comparison with other lineups, not just be all excited because the offense is clicking against 3 teams who are worse than the Mets.
I brought up his minor league numbers because he played there the last two year and he didn’t play good. He’s NEVER played a full season in the Major leagues, so that’s why I talked about his minor league numbers….Pagan played a full year in the majors and played well, and you think he’s better than Pagan because of what? 18 games? Nonsense.
Theriot and Reyes aren’t comparable. Reyes’ career OB% are low because when he first came up he had a bad OB%. The Jose Reyes from 03-05 isn’t the same Jose reyes that’s playing for us now. So why do you want to count his stats from those years when he was a completley different player than he is now? His OB% from from 03-05 was .303 – that’s why his career OB% is low. His OB% from 06-11 is about .350. And Last year his OB% was down becuase wasn’t 100% the whole year. This year his OB% is .352…
And Reyes has much more power than Theriot. theriot has 16 HR’s in his CAREER, and Reyes had 11 LAST YEAR, playing hurt. Reyes will get on just as much as Theirot, and hit for a lot more power, and gives you way more speed – Reyes is better, it’s not close.
And if you want to give me Pagan’s sabermetrics stats that I really couldn’t care less about, i got one for you, he ranked 8th in the NL among NL OFers in WAR…..
btw, I don’t think we have the BEST lineup in the NL. I agree with you the Cards are better, but the Mets maybe #2…and no, it has nothing to do with the 5 game win streak, I said all ofseason long that we could have one of the best lineups in the league.
