Feliciano Likely Out For Season, Alderson Looking Pretty Wise
In mid-December, when the crosstown rival Yankees signed Mets’ lefty specialist Pedro Feliciano to a two year, $8 million deal, the front office was criticized for letting him walk. Now, roughly four months later, it is looking like quite the smart move by Sandy Alderson who elected to pass on Feliciano.
Feliciano had experienced a sore tricep that put him on the DL at the start of the season. However, it wasn’t until Wednesday that an MRI revealed a torn capsule in his left shoulder, an injury that will likely require surgery, which would sideline him until spring training of 2012.
Feliciano said today that he is leaning towards having the surgery so he is most likely not going to see any action in 2011.
Feliciano, who has appeared in 266 games from 2008-2010 with the Amazins’, has been one of the most reliable middle relievers in the game the past few seasons. Setting a single season record for appearances in 2009 and breaking his own record in 2010, he was seen by some as overworked and publicly called by Yankees GM Brian Cashman “abused” by the Mets. It is highly possible the reason the Mets chose to part ways with Feliciano is that they believed they the 34-year old southpaw’s arm may have hit its peak.
Regardless, the final result is that the Mets will receive a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds for losing Feliciano and the Yankees have $8 million invested in a mid-thirtes reliever who is probably out for season. Score 1 goes to Sandy Alderson.

Don’t give Sandy too much credit for this. Letting Pedro, and Takahashi for that matter, walk was a no brainer. Any GM worth his salt would have let them both go for what they were asking. Turns out they both had to sign for less, Pedro’s career might be over and Takahashi’s pitching like the Angels wish they had Blaine Boyer.
The Yanks can afford a mistake like that, and so can the Angels, pretty much.
I don’t know how much credit I’m going to give Alderson for passing, but I can definitely admit that I’m glad that he did. I expect a ridiculous comment from Brian Cashman sometime in the next two days or so concerning this.
Anyway, after everything Feliciano has done for us, I wish him a speedy recovery and good luck in the future.
My best wishes to Pedro Feliciano for a complete, speedy recovery. He was a warrior for us and like almost all Mets fans, I appreciate it.
Does anybody know the contractual obligations of the Yankees to Petey? Two years at 100%? Also, did the Yankees have insurance for this kind of happening?
Finally, the Commissioner’s Office should look into Brian Cashman’s statement. If it’s corroborated that Cashman made his scurrilous charge, he should be censured and fined. Cashman undermines the integrity of the game with his baseless claim.
Ridiculous.
I feel bad for Pedro. Say what you want about why he isn’t here or what we did to him you still have to feel for a guy who gave us everything he had and then some!
And whatever gratification I get from knowing the Yankees got screwed I still feel very bad for Pedro who earned every penny he ever got from us and then some he didn’t get!
Sick little metsies, a damaged Felicano is better than the little leaguers alderson replaced him with. Alderson is making Paulino’s return a mets holiday. the last of the roidals. Sandy can’t win without roids. Don’t forget to thank Sansy for all those new talents he brought in Emaus Hairston Harris….. HAHhahahahaHA!!!! hety sandy give that young guy some roids, he’ll only be out 50 games and might be healthy by then!!!!!
I don’t understand this post does anyone know an Idiot to English translator on the internet?
Hey Paulino was a Phillie… Your team? So Your not exactly one to talk. And hows lidge and Utley working out so far.
They made the right move with Felciano, but what they did wrong was, they didn’t replace him with anybody good. I wanted them to sign Choate, and bring back Taka, if not him, the could have spent a little more and get Fuentes – they should have done something like that.
We lost two good LHRP’s and we replaced them with average and below average guys – Our bulllpen is weaker now because of that. And it wasn’t very wise to have only ONE lefty in the bullpen in a division with the Braves and Phillies, who have a lot of good left handed hitters.
Vinnie I get what your saying about not making up for the loss but you have to say he made up for it considering what those two are currently doing.
And the only way improving on them might have helped is if you believed that having two better Pen guys was really enough. Proof so far is it would NOT have been enough.
It has been the starters not getting past the 5th and 6th innings that have led to most of our losses and yes the few times we have had a starter do that the Pen has blown it but that pen has been overworked trying to make up for the lack of starters going deep in the other games.
I think we should wait to see what the Pen is like once the Starters get over the spring hump they always seem to go though and see where the pen is at once it doesn’t have to pitch 5 innings every game.
By the end of May we should have a better handle on how good the Pen is.
And we fix from there.
Metsie, we lost a LOT of close games this year. Collins said the other day we’re like one swing away from being 9-2…. The first three games against the Rockies we lost by ONE run. And how many games have did lose we lose this year because of the bullpen? If we did have two better RP’s, I think we could be over .500 right now.
Yes Vinnie you are not wrong there I’m just pointing out that if the Starters could manage to get past the 5th and 6th innings without giving up a ton of runs those RPs who had to enter the game might be a little fresher and rested and gotten the job done a little better.
The Hitting has been good enough to keep us in games.
Sure a few more hits could have made us winners. A few less Errors would have too! And few less runs given up by the entire pitching staff would also have the same affect.
But I will also point out that the Red Sox were considered the team to beat this year and they have a 2 and something record as we speak.
This will change in time as I also things things will change a bit for the better for us once the Starters get into their groove and don’t require 5 innings of relief a day from the Pen. Then we will have a fully rested Pen who will get those outs because they aren’t required to pitch EVERY DAY!
It’s just too soon to be wetting our pants or deciding the team needs to scrap a pen that has been asked to do much more than a Pen should.
It could also be turned around and put that if the starters had not given up as many runs as they had the Pen wouldn’t have been in position to blow a lead because all the runs we scored trying to catch up would have been enough to rout the opposition instead of catching up to the point two runs could get the lead back.
There is no question the pen last year was better, but it was as clear as can be the right move on Feliciano was to get a supplemental round draft choice for him. I thought Takahashi was a good guy for our 2011 pen but I don’t know what he was asking for and so far he has been worse then anyone we did sign.
The question that should be asked is why did we get the guys we did? Well so far 60 Million dollars of the payroll has combined for 10 hits, 2 HR’s, 8 runs and 6 RBI. Another 22 Million dollars of the payroll has combined for 2 2/3 IP with 2 hits, 2 walks, a wild pitch and a blown save.
That’s 82 Million of a 143 Million dollar payroll either injured and unnable to play (Santana Bay) or being managed (Beltran) or DFA’d (Perez, Castillo, GMJ, Escobar) or just potentially useable (Igarashi)
If you don’t think that usage of the payroll had anything to do with the guys we were limited to signing, get real.
If you think people are just falling all over themselves to come here too that’s incorrect. I doubt anyone with any other options wants to come here at all. Even guys we did get actually get didn’t even want to be here. Delgado spurned us for the Marlins, Bay waffled for about 5 days trying to see if anyone would come close to our offer and Beltran would have taken 20 Million less to play on the other side of the same City and that was when the vault was wide open. The days of signing a Scott Schowenweiss to an 11 Million dollar contract and Mota to a 5 Million dollar contract are over.
What makes you so sure that Choate would even want to come here? Not only is the ownership incompetent but now their severely limited in payroll as well. Two years at 2.5 Million would have cost us bare minimum 3 M and being that Choate is 35 that could very well wind up on the DL too.
You think a guy like Harang who was born, raised and went to high school and college in San Diego would come here for the same 3.5 Million he got from the Padres? I don’t think so. The fact is if we ever want to fix any of our numerous glaring weaknesses we’ll have to do it in house or settle for players no one else wants because we can no longer blugen them over the head with our wallet. Letting Feliciano go at least gives us the chance of being able to fill one of our weaknesses 3-5 years down the road so we’re not in as bad a position then as we are now and by doing so, perhaps some players might actually WANT to come here.
And how do you know Choate wouldn’t want to come here? Did he say that? You think he’s a risk to go on the DL because he’s 35, but what about Brydak? He’s older than Choate. what if he goes on the DL, Agee? They should have just spent a little more money to get the younger and better pitcher.
We could have offered Harang a more than 3.5 million. Obviously if we offered him the same amount he would sign with San Diego, but what if we offered more? How do you know he wouldn’t want to come here if we offered more money?
I’m not asking them to spend money like we did in the Omar years. I’m just saying they shold have spent just a little more than what we did this year. Signing Harang and getting two better RP’s isn’t that much more than what they spent this year – We could afford that.
so now we give geniusalderson, the smirking sage of roosevelt avenue, credit for letting feliciano go because the all knowing one realized pedro would get hurt. no..pedro was let go because he wanted to get paid. geniusalderson chose to sign biff the bonser who is out for the year.i guess geniusalderson forgot to look into his brains on that one.personally i wish feliciano the best…he was a true warrior for us.its sad when a true met warriors injury is cause for celebration in met land.does the sage of roosevelt avenue realize people have to catch the ball(hairston)or play(paulino)or pitch(boyer) before he signs them.i ask this because geniusalderson did not realize his bash brothers were juicing up…where was his all knowing ability then?
Regarding Petey and Frankie, I don’t want us to be glad to think were saving Wilpon money by one guy leaving us and then getting hurt and the other not finishing 55 games. Is this what we’ve come to, hoping to save the Mets money either through injuries and failing to meet performance goals? I wish Petey and Frankie the best.
Injuries are part of baseball but I don’t like them on any team. I’d rather see the best players on the field, with no exceptions. When another team plays the Mets, I want to see the Mets knock their heads off, mano to mano. If any front office in MLBs, including that of the Mets, makes a deal with a player, there’s no way I’d want that player not to be on the field or not to succeed.
