Baby, I'm guessing u stopped midway through tyhe list of those lagging behind or else u may have actually noticed Philadelphia as one of those less fortunate.
STOP BEING YANKEE-ENVIOUS! That certainly isn't what we signed on for as former Boys of Summer faithful. What we signed on for is the blood, sweat & tears of hard work player development superceding checkbook & legend development. Well, certainly the former is where we lost our way. Now, much has been made of this frustrating period between 1986 & present day mediocrity during that period THE WILPONS have held varying degrees of influence regarding the makeup of this club's roster. While searching for a dscapegoat it's best to examine the usual suspects for means, motive & opoertunity. there are 11 potential suspects:
NELSON DOUBLEDAY
FRED WILPON
JEFF WUILPON
FRANK CASHEN
GERRY HUNSICKER
AL HARAZIN
JOE McILVAINE
STEVE PHILLIPS
JIM DOUQUETTE
OMAR MINAYA
All of them had the opportunity, only one of them had it throughout the entire 25 yr period('86-'11). We ALL know his initials are FW, think of that, sound it out. no, it isn't the FU we'd laugh wryly at; but isn't it FU U as a double U.
Fred is a LOT of things that are impediments to the thriving health of a MLB franchise in NYC; however he only has total, absolute control over 9 of the 25 yrs; and there is strong evidence to support that his daily involvement has waned over the years as he;'s entrusted much of his passion for gertting "more done with less investment" to his Community Colege graduate first born son, "the PRIDE OF HIS anemic LOINS". While there's much to say in behalf of Fred's Real Estate Development savy, accumen, there is further evidence that there is much to say for Fred's desire to be out of the spotlight(nedishness), whereas "being the best" is not necessatily on his priority list at all. As NYers we know the names of the successful Real Estate developers & while there's evidence to support some modicum of success, financially, Sterling Enterprises is certainly not among TISCH or TRUMP Fred's foremost peers/competitors. The preminence of their surnames being front & center as opposed to the camoflauge anonimity provided by "Sterling" who's namesake anmong precous metals is certainly far from the top of the most desireable.
Baby, much is evident & made of Fred's love affair with our legendary Dodgers(my first live game experience was @ Ebbets(1954/55?)with my Nana).
Baby, let's commit herasy & strip away ALL the lavish emotion from that franchise lovingly referred to as "The Boys of Summer" a franchise that prior to WW2 was vanilla mediocrity incarnate. A franchise that even after it's legendary sculptor, Branch Ruickey, identified & added his 'final'finishing, yet highly controversial & unconventional ingrdient(Jackie) in '48 it still took them 7 more years of also-ran WS status to finally break through in '55. Al, while our frustrating history of broken promises
is patience breaking, and while I understand your selfish myopic position that ONLY the NYM matter and all others are irrelevant, I must point out simply, if it was as easy as u believe it should be to garner end of season laurels be it Division, League or WS titles. Wouldn't more teams than just one find it more difficult than not to acomplish it. Baby, nearly ever reasonable sportsfan believes that prior to every season each franchise has the identical goal with their own individual platted course for reaching it be it a Superbowl Trophy, Lord Stanley's cup, or that round flag festooned WS trophy. You have no concous idea of what is or isn't an acceptable period between successes unless you have a perspective that includes more than just the one aberrative Team. While u protest the 1 every 25 yr pace of our present course while gazing enviously at the crosstowner's rate of 1 every 4yrs. It should be noted that u should never make comparisons to known aberrations(out lying statistics) It certainly should be judged based upon ALL those who have at least once plotted a successful course to that elusive trophy. incl the aberational 1 in 4 of NYY, the industry average of all 21 MLB franchises who have at least once been successful is 1 WS Title every 27.47619 years.
Should we have done better in the 80s? Certainly. Should at least 3 seasons of over 100 Wins have yielded more than '86 & '88 successes? you would think. Did Ftrank Cashen fail? NO? why not? Thus u have the realm that is baseball unpredictability. Rickey's "Boys" shoyld have been much better than just '55. No? But wait, I know YOU DON'T CARE!
Babty, here's sorta how I see it, over the past 5 yrs since '06(BTW I don't consider '00 more than an aberration & as such inconsequential) we were done in by business, financial decisions directing baseball decisions. "Good enough to win" outweighing "Sure to win" Just as we've just experienced with the first few weeks of this Season, SPing rules over ALL other considerations. While the offense was scoring nearly 5R/G the Rotation was only providing 5IP/G, yielding 5.something R/G The burden of early workload on a decent; but middlin bullpen coverted too many close & lates into routs.
Baby, isn't that a synopsis of '06-'10? more oer less? In '05 we inked a top rated draft pick pitcher(Pelfrey) & got strongarmed into a large $5M pricetag along with a guaranteed MLB roster slot. shortly after Pelfrey's initiation into ProBall a decision was made to use that excessiveness contibuting where it mastterd most, "The Show". Now I ask u, given the backgrounds of the principals involved, Omar Minaya,Fred Wilpon, Jeff Wilpon exactly whose decision does that seem most likely attributed to? Personally, my conclusion is Jeff, as I can picture his being called to account by his "eye-shaded" father for the outlandinsh expendature, while the recalcitrant prodigy excuses his behavior clainming it was worth it as we'll "save" compared to a provewn vet signed for that 25TH active slot. Baby, one of the worst products created by nepotism is the self assurance of guaranteed employment. After '06's postseason was derailed by a 40% unavailable rate in the rotation(Pedro & Duque) remarkable contributions were made by 2 "suprise" career underachievers, Maine & Perez. solidifying their place among the socalled "good enoughs". Again, who's decision, logically, does not improving upon them by spending more money sound like? Fred? do u truly believe Fred could rattle off more names on our present roster than u or I? Do u truly believe he's THAT involved in the individual minutia decisions or do u agree with me, he most likely carves out an operating budget for the NYM entire operations(Payroll, staff, groundscrew, debt service, mortgage, utilities, etc.) and hand it to his COO to divy into select depts?(Fred's old job as partner w/Doubleday. CFO/NYM)
Considering Jeff politiced his father/employer for absolute control by merging COO & GM responsibilities after Duquette reassignment decision, exactly how supportive of his power usurper are we to believe he was?
Baby, I've made it my lifelong(61 yrs) interest to read peple, consider their potential motivations eschewing the easy surface conclusions foistered by the media; and I'll tell u that until the hiring of Alderson, the fly in the Met ointment has always been named Wilpon with father passing baton to son. There are substantial reasons for Jeff to have scuttled Minaya, both personal & professional just as much of Freds's baseball education was tutored by Cashen, Jeff's mentor in baseball executivness was Phillips. who else?. For ALL of our love for our architect(Cashen) it's clear he was of a different era once checkbook baseball became en vogue. While it's yet to be seen if MONEYBALL can out achieve CHECKBOOKBALL, it's clearly apparent our current ownership was not willing nor capable of an all out checkbook campaign; but meer tokenism
I certainly look at the 12 names preceeding Alderson's on the NYM GM list and find few who could have made better use of a mere 10M, when, in today's environement, faced with supplying 2SP,2B,C,entire Pen. while the caliber acquired is far less than required to maintain contender/pretender status, it signifies a new beginning with less minutia 'Wiponized' and, I for one, am enthusiasticly considering it a new direction uninhibited by amateur, shortsighted meddling at the detail level.
Baby the rate of success be it your 3/32 or my 1/25 is a matter of THE PAST. not the present & surely NOT THE FUTURE. C'mon board Ther's a new sherrif in town(Alderson) & the money lender's(Selig) in his corner.
BTW, despite this current start, I'm still bullish for 82-85Ws come Sept. 30,2011. 77-81 if Reyes & more dealt as some speculate.

Like u, I only care about this team's accomplishments. I prefer to focus on the future, not dwell on the dissatisfaction with the past.

Al, No of course Bernie was merely the straw that did in the camel. As to where this owner went wrong, I believe it was forcasted by Nelson Doubleday("That's a mistake" upon hearing of Jeff apointment as COO, NYM) immediately after the new Sterling org chart became public, C uh-Oh, Jeffie armed with his Associates degree from Palm Beach Comunity College & his AM Radio affixed to WFAN(his advisory board) was the initial direction changer for this team's overall prospects

Baby, While 3 div titles in 32 yrs certainly appears paltrty compared to our nearest perspective, NYY,ATL(90s) you may want to do a little investigating as to the 29 other franchises to see how many exceed that total, very few
it also depends on when u stake your perspective from, for instance for ALL their division title streaks through the 90s over their entire 100 yr history the Braves be it from Boston,Milwalkee or Atlanta has an interesting 1WS title per 10 yr(1 per city affiliation) rate going for them.
As a point of fact as supposedly the WS TITLE is actually the Holy Grail of baseball and not division titles(no divisions prior to '69)
As to WS titles the arguement is much clearer. As I stated our current tortoise like rate is 1WS Title every 25 yrs. Paltry, we think; however there are actually MLB franchises that exist today who have yet to acqquire their very first title. There are also francises which have come & gone with empty WS trophy cases. Some of these are original teams from the 1800s, some are, like us expansion rats.
Franchises with ZEMPTY WS Triophy cases:
BROOKLYN TOBINS
COLORADO ROCKIES
HOUSTON COLT 45s/HOUSTON ASTROS(our womb partner birthed alongside us
KC ATHLETICS
MILWALKEE BREWERS
MONTREAL EXPOS
SEATTLE MARINERS
TB RAYS/DEVIL RAYS
TEXAS RANGERS
SD PADRES
SEATTLE PILOTS
ST LOUIS BROWNS
WADHINGTON NATIONALS
Certainly a franchises ability to compile a crowded case relies upon their org, birth date. Only since 1961 have we the consideration for newborns aka expansion teams in the interest of fairness, perhaps these toddlers should be categorized & measuresd as a special subset. Primarily because the 2 League Leaders(NYY/27.STL/10) in WS trophies already had established dominating, preeminent status prior to 1961. That subset of toddlers would include
1961 - LAA,TX
1962 - HOU,NYM
1969 - PILOTS,BREWS,GNATS,PADS
1977 - MARINERS,JAYS
1993 - ROCKS,FISH
1998 - SNAKES,RAYS
ALL OF WHICH HAVE HAD BETWEEN 13 & 50 YEARS OF WS POTENTIAL TITLES OF WHICH ONLY FL & TOR HAVE EXCEEDED THE NYM RATE OF 2 IN 49 YRS WITH FL HAVING AN EXCELLENT RATE OF 2 IN 18 YRS, as we ALL know about that first purchase by Huyzenger(SP?).
Baby, my point isn't to create complacency; but to focus on why what seems crappy from a neighbor of NYY perspective, certainly isn't. Al, with all due respect to Sinatra, Minelli & their songewriters. As a longtime transplanted elsewhere Brooklyn citizen, I'll tell u that NY is certainly special as a baseball-centric environement; however that breeds angsgt not deservance, checck your NY ego at the door, exactly why is it we SHOULD be better than the 29 bretheren in the industry. Certainly we don';t play native NY players or hire NY native fronrofficers.
Al you mentioned bliss & ignorance. I choose to find my bliss, by way of facts sans desires & emptions re. my baseball universe.

In closing, this thought, of the teams that actually hoisted a WS trophy(21 in all) 9 have set a pace better than our 1 in 25, 11 lag behind us.
The 9 betters:
NYY,STL,As(PHL/KC/OAK),BOS,GIANTS(NY/SF),DODGERS(BK,LA)REDS,TOR,FL.
The 11 laggers:
BALT,CHW,CHC,MIN(WASH/MIN),BRVS(BOS/MILW/ATL),CLV,PHL,AZ,KC,DET,LAA.
also keeping in mind those 10 current franchises with empty cases
matematical net we are #10 out of 30 current franchises regarding our WS Trophy pace. As fans, we always believe it should be better; however(obviously) we're not lonely & arguably we are one of the best expansion franchises.

it also depends on when u stake your perspective from, for instance for ALL their division title streaks through the 90s over their entire 100 yr history the Braves be it from Boston,Milwalkee or Atlanta has an interesting 1WS title per 10 yr(1 per city affiliation) rate going for them.
As a point of fact as supposedly the WS TITLE is actually the Holy Grail of baseball and not division titles(no divisions prior to ’69)
As to WS titles the arguement is much clearer.
1961 – LAA,TX
1962 – HOU,NYM
1969 – PILOTS,BREWS,GNATS,PADS
1977 – MARINERS,JAYS
1993 – ROCKS,FISH
1998 – SNAKES,RAYS
ALL OF WHICH HAVE HAD BETWEEN 13 & 50 YEARS OF WS POTENTIAL TITLES OF WHICH ONLY FL & TOR HAVE EXCEEDED THE NYM RATE OF 2 IN 49 YRS WITH FL HAVING AN EXCELLENT RATE OF 2 IN 18 YRS, as we ALL know about that first purchase by Huyzenger(SP?).
Baby, my point isn’t to create complacency; but to focus on why what seems crappy from a neighbor of NYY perspective, certainly isn’t. Al, with all due respect to Sinatra, Minelli & their songewriters. As a longtime transplanted elsewhere Brooklyn citizen, I’ll tell u that NY is certainly special as a baseball-centric environement; however that breeds angsgt not deservance, checck your NY ego at the door, exactly why is it we SHOULD be better than the 29 bretheren in the industry. Certainly we don’;t play native NY players or hire NY native fronrofficers.
Al you mentioned bliss & ignorance. I choose to find my bliss, by way of facts sans desires & emptions re. my baseball universe.

In closing, this thought, of the teams that actually hoisted a WS trophy(21 in all) 9 have set a pace better than our 1 in 25, 11 lag behind us.
The 9 betters:
NYY,STL,As(PHL/KC/OAK),BOS,GIANTS(NY/SF),DODGERS(BK,LA)REDS,TOR,FL.
The 11 laggers:
BALT,CHW,CHC,MIN(WASH/MIN),BRVS(BOS/MILW/ATL),CLV,PHL,AZ,KC,DET,LAA.
also keeping in mind those 10 current franchises with empty cases
matematical net we are #10 out of 30 current franchises regarding our WS Trophy pace. As fans, we always believe it should be better; however(obviously) we’re not lonely & arguably we are one of the best expansion franchises.

Well I was never a big Emaus fan and I did think they sort of gave him special status and did not force him to win the job as much as they simply eliminated the competition he faced.

And maybe it wasn't a very good selection but there are some points that should be noted when we look at the decision and how it was made.

Emaus was drafted Rule5 at the Winter Meetings. Sandy had been hired just about a week maybe two before that meeting and draft. He was still assembling his staff at the time and so did not really have the benefit of a very good scouting and evaluation sessions to determine who to draft and resign. Most teams get together with their scouting and eval departments right after the WS to discuss the offseason plan, Rule 5 draft and general evaluations of the players they have.

Sandy did not have that luxury because of how long it took to hire him and when he should have been having those evaluation discussion he was still busy trying to compile the rest of his staff.

Takahashi had to extend his deadline because of this and I am sure they didn't get a full look at what was available in Rule5 either.

While drafting Emaus was a bust it was a cheap 25k bust. and If Beato continues to show the promise he has shown so far you have to say a 50/50 success rate in a Rule 5 draft is pretty decent.

So this really should not be considered as a Sandy blunder. Doesn't mean there won't be one or two in the future but I think the rushed and disorganized state of the FO before the Meetings had more to do with the failures of aquisitions this off

I am a Mets veteran here and I remember the last GM being the one that makes Alderson look like a genius. (read that again I am NOT calling Alderson a genius)

You really must have lived under a rock for the last 6 years.

Jacobs
Catalanotto
Kelvim Escobar 1.25M and NEVER put on the uniform
Moto
Alou
Julio Franco
Tatis (who had a great first year but when tanked completely 2nd year refused to release him)
Gary Mathews Jr
Castillo (more contract then anything else)
Perez
JJ Putz - damaged goods before he even got here
Alex Cora
Sean Green
Scott Schoenweiss

This is just the tip of the ice berg..............

Did you forget that when the bullpen was blowing leads at an alarmning rate in 08 he sat on his hands at the deadline and did absoutely squat?

boy Bayonne is so smart................or as most call it selective memory

Hu may not be a potential HoF guy, but most everyone agrees he's the best middle infielder available to the Mets right now. Your stalking horse, the kid with all the errors at Buffalo, may or may not have major league potential, but right now he's having trouble competing defensively in the International League.

As a GM, you'd be fired in two weeks. You've been wrong on Mike Jacobs, Ruben Tejada, Daniel Murphy, Brad Emaus (defensively good but you just knock him as a total failure) . . . . (the list goes on, and on, and on). You need a little humility to take the place of your lack of baseball insight.

How's that working out for you? Smelled any satisfaction or happiness yet?
Baby, here's a friendly,. no animosity or sarcasm, tip for u from a grizzled veteran of life in general;
Al, while REALITY may suck, dealing with it, managing it, not accepting it is a much more productive way of life, in this instance it goes something like this;
I REALIZE OWNERSHIP IS IN AN IMPOSSIBLE FINANCIAL SITUATION WITH AN ARROGANT GREEDY LITTLE TWERP TRYING TO SCREWQ THEM OUT OF EVERY LAST CENT BY USING CLASS ENVY & CREATIVE STORYLINES DEVOID OF CONCRETE FACTS, In that atmosphere, I realize the team is in "make do" mode. I don't like making do; but I'll accept it temporarily as long as they're making do with the best options at their disposal & not just accepting the easiest solutions, I'll "make do" for as long as necessary & give them the benedfit of my doubts for as long as I believe they are trying their best, I'll withydraw my support if & only if I see evidence whereby the chose a deliberately lesser option only because it was easier than to do than the much batter option.

Baby, something along those lines, certainly should put more peace in your heart. TRY IT! U MAY JUST SLEEP BETTER.

Baby, here’s a friendly,. no animosity or sarcasm, tip for u from a grizzled veteran of life in general;
Al, while REALITY may suck, dealing with it, managing it, not accepting it is a much more productive way of life, in this instance it goes something like this;
I REALIZE OWNERSHIP IS IN AN IMPOSSIBLE FINANCIAL SITUATION WITH AN ARROGANT GREEDY LITTLE TWERP TRYING TO SCREWQ THEM OUT OF EVERY LAST CENT BY USING CLASS ENVY & CREATIVE STORYLINES DEVOID OF CONCRETE FACTS, In that atmosphere, I realize the team is in “make do” mode. I don’t like making do; but I’ll accept it temporarily as long as they’re making do with the best options at their disposal & not just accepting the easiest solutions, I’ll “make do” for as long as necessary & give them the benedfit of my doubts for as long as I believe they are trying their best, I’ll withydraw my support if & only if I see evidence whereby the chose a deliberately lesser option only because it was easier than to do than the much batter option.

Baby, something along those lines, certainly should put more peace in your heart. TRY IT! U MAY JUST SLEEP BETTER.
