Last night, we got to see the difference between bolstering your pitching through building a structure they can survive in by appearing to be better & improving it by concentrating on acquiring 5 outstanding contributors actually making them better. Taking 5 somewhat mediocre pitchers & protecting them wityh high distant walls cewrtainly can create the illusion of improved performances; however stadiums are far from mobile. step by step the replacement with SUPERIOR PITCHERS, focusing on just 6 individuals(5SP+CL) since the ’02 STERLING takeover has certainly been a failed attempt at stabilizing expenses by using a fixed cost EXPENDITURE(STADIUM) to bolster performance instead of improved personnel. Consider the PAYROLL comparisons these past 9 years:

Somehow, a decision was made that the escalating payroll necessary by full commitment to pitchers capable of winning anywhere at anytime, could be managed more conservatively by making “good enough to win” pitchers more capable through building dominant ramparts for them to pitch within where the increased acreage within favored your speedier,(less expensive than pitching”)egulars a fixed cost solution to an escalating cost problem (sorta like pouring inexpensive Macy’s brand Scotch into Chivas Regal bottles before the party. as a NYY fan cousin of mine once did before his daughter’s Christening party. Pelfrey, is merely the latest example of this charade. of SANTANA, PEDRO, DUQUE, PEREZ, LIVAN, MAINE, NIESE, DICKEY, PELFREY, YOUNG, CAPUANO, GEE and any others I may have exempted from our rotation participation of late. you would find it impossible to coble a rotation to challenge HALLADAY,LEE,OSWALT,HAMELS,BLANTON no matter how u choose to mix & match

Right on Devin. He should have traded Duda and Pelfrey for Lincecum and Tejada and Niese for Cain to get us 2 frontline starters. What was he thinking?

As I posted in another thread, Sandy Alderson totally miscalculated the value of Mike Pelfrey. He believed that Pelfrey would hold down the fort while Johan mended. What was he thinking? He said his goal in the offseason was too try and sign two back of the rotation starters and wrongkly assumed Pelfrey and Niese were front of the rotation starters. Total miscalculation and it raises a red flag about his player analysis skills moving forward. You already had two back of the rotation starters Sandy, what what you neded was front end guys.

When Pelfrey pitches in Philly they are batting .379 against him. Unfortunately he was ruined by the Omar regime, and as a pitcher he simply has no foundation. He is a joke. Besides his physical stature and strength, he has very little going for him as a pitcher. Unfortunately, he stinks so badly that he has virtually no trade value anymore. The worst thing the Mets can do is allow him to singlehandedly destroy their season. He should be sent to the minors immediately and left there until he learns how to pitch to professional hitters.

Dude, Collins shouldnt have started him tonight because he simply SUCKS. He needs to have some kind of magical injury that requires a trip the the DL. The mets basically stand NO chance when he is on the mound….and if I have to see that man licking his hand and passing it on his forehead, I am going to puke. i kinda feel sorry for him. This is about a complete 180 for those who wanted Mike Pelfrey locked up long term. If you don’t remember, let me refresh your memory. This is for the people who actually thought Pelfrey was ace material after last season’s fluke of a start:

Can we please send Pelfrey to Buffalo and have someone else take his place in the rotation NOW? The man’s ERA is now 7.39. That is an abomination for a guy who’s supposed to be our “ace”. Enough is enough. Another thing, I hope each & every single one of you who are reading this right now realize that this is a harsh reminder why you should NEVER fall in love with a Mets pitcher so quickly because of a so-so season. I don’t give a damn how many games he won in the past, what his record was out of the gate, or whatever…Pelfrey is what he is. This goes double for the members of the Chris Crapuano fanclub.

Collins should not have started him tonight, he battled flu, lost weight and getting IV’s does not replace the fatigue that sets in. Collins should have started a rested and ready Gee and given Pelf the night off to get his strength back cause he ran out of steam in 4th inning.

Once again a rookie unknown pitcher shuts down Mets, if these rookies were so good then other teams couldn’t hit them but Mets have a taste for rookie throwers.

That GS was a big obstacle to overcome not to say the last 2 runs given up by BP helped.
I want Pelfrey to succeed but the hand licking when he is struggling is just driving me crazy, doesn’t he realize how weak he looks when he is constantly licking his hand?
I have seen on cold days pitchers allowed to “moisten” but please someone tell him that other teams can smell the fear when he starts to lick his hand.

Well, they played great ball for 7 games (6-1 record) then suddenly revert to early season form…..Mike Pelfrey, putrid performance, walks galore (7 total), bullpen horrible. Hopefully this is a one game anomaly and not something worse. But, hey, Dillon Gee mastered Dan Warthen’s specialty pitch quite nicely: the Grand Slam pitch. What is that now, 14 grand slams allowed since Opening Day 2010 and none hit by the Mets? Since the Braves put McDowell on administrative leave maybe the Mets can trade Warthen to Atlanta and he can teach his pitchers that special pitch so maybe we can get a “slam” of our own next time we play the Bravos!
