Willie Harris Is Having A Nice Spring

When Mets fans think of Willie Harris, they think of the stinker who made diving catches that took wins (and possibly playoff berths) away from the Mets.  I was happy to see the Mets signed Willie Harris, mostly because I don’t have to see him on the opposing team and making ridiculous plays against us.

When the Mets signed Willie Harris, I wondered how he would contribute to the Mets as a player. But we weren’t sure of how R.A. Dickey would contribute either and look how he turned out.

Through 15 games this spring, Willie Harris has a .317 AVG, with 3 HRs, 9 RBI’s, and has a .440 OBP. Not bad at all, even for spring stats.

But hey, if he could do that during the first 15 games of the regular season, watch out.

Will he be as productive when it comes to the regular season? Its definitely a possibility. Ike Davis had a great spring training last season, went down to the minors, got called back up and had a very productive season both offensively and defensively. We could go out on a limb and say he was “superman” with all the over-the-dugout fence catches.

All in all, Willie Harris is having a nice spring.  I think he’ll be a player to watch as he contributes at multiple positions defensively and come off the bench as a pinch-hitter. But one thing is certain, it’s going to be refreshing to see him snatching victories away from other teams with his glove rather than us. I think we can all agree we’ve had enough of that.

  • It’s good to have a nice spring but it doesn’t really have any effect on how good a player does when the season starts.

If that was the case then Pelfrey wouldn’t make the starting five.

    • Anyone remember Butch Huskey?

    • I do agree with you on that. If that were the case, he wouldn’t be even on the squad. LOL.

Now, i refered to Ike Davis because he did have a good spring in 2010, and had a successful semi-rookie season (because he wasn’t even considered as one).

      in 24 ABs, he hit 3 HRS, had 10 RBI’s, a .480 AVG, and a .536 OBP. (From Mets.com Stats)

From what i said in my post, he came back and showed he was “superman”. Even when he got cut, he went back to the minors, came back up, and continued what he started in spring. So i kindof disagree that it does have an effect, as long as people like Ike Davis, can put their minds to it.

      • Very bad comaprison Davis to Harris. Davis kid, first round pick upside galore. Harris, veteran back up, no upside, a long history of being below average player. Comapre him to some “awesome”not Met of the past like Joe McEwing but to Davis its a joke.

        • You got me there. ;) We could compare Willie Harris to several Mets like Ruben Gotay, Joe McEwing, and more.
