Time to Petition the Wilpons to Sell

This is going to be a very simple post. A link to an online petition, which makes a very good case as to why all fans–and tax payers–should demand that the Wilpons sell ALL their ownership of the team immediately. Enough is enough!

About the Author: Stephen Hanks

Stephen Hanks (Tom Terrific) is a magazine editor and writer based in Brooklyn, NY, who has been the publisher and editorial director of publications ranging in subjects from sports to health to archaeology. Even though he grew up near Yankee Stadium, he loathes the team from the Bronx and has been a die-hard Mets fan since attending his first game at the Polo Grounds in 1963.

  • tax payers? That’s a stretch. What the hell do they have to do with it?

    • Read the damn petition and you’ll figure it out!

      • I was trying to avoid it, but since you asked so politely, how can I refuse?

      • OK, I read it. The tax payer angle is a wild stretch, to say the least. Citi bank? who cares? And besides, they paid the money back already.

I don’t remember all the details, but the yankees did get more tax payer support, and the wilpons pretty much paid for Citi field (one reason they are so far in debt). the gov’t backed some bonds, and did infrastructure stuff like roads, the train station, etc.

  • I’ve been begging for this petition for about 3 years now…and its finally here!!

  • Finally – Fire the Wilpons!!!

  • Nonsense. Nothing like Mets fans to kick someone when they’re down. Typically against players, but this time, ownership. Good fans would be supporting ownership who are being sued under false pretexts.

    • Not trying to kick them while they are down…I just feel the Wilpons are terrible owners and the Mets deserve better. The Wilpons have been majority owners for 9 years…I feel the Mets were in better shape 10 years ago than they are today.

As for “being sued under false pretexts” time will tell if those “pretexts” were “false.”

      • well, 10 years ago they were coming off back to back 90+win seasons, 2 playoff appearances, and a WS appearance.

about to head downhill fast though!

        • Hmmm 2006 and 2007 was 10 years ago? I didn’t know that. I must have over slept! lol

Oh 2000 Never happened too? Must have been a dream of mine.

If I’m not mistaken the Wilpons owned the team then too!

    • I hear what your saying but I’m so sick of this shell game they’ve been playing with us for 20 years. Sign some aging former shell of themselves and then bring up all these players that don’t belong in the Majors. Give away draft pick after draft pick, draft poorly (on purpose to save the signing bonus) rush the few prospects we have so their arb clock starts ahead of time so they only have to pay a minimum salary even though we get nothing out of them. Late season salary dumps where recovering money is the focus instead of extracting say a second basemen for a change (one that can be here for a while and play well)

This has to be the most mismanaged team is sports franchise history and the shame of it all is with the money spent over the years we could have been to the playoffs 15 times out of 20 years like the Braves have and maybe won a couple of World Championships instead of sign, sign, sign, crash. Repeat. Sign, sign, sign, crash. Repeat.

    • You must be drinking some kind of weird Wilpon Kool-aid.

      • Can you and your cronnies come up with a better comeback? For crying out loud – I’m so sick of reading that crap. Sorry if someone has a different opinion, that whole “must be drinking kool-aid” is like reading a response from a 5th grader.

GROW UP and have a real counterpoint.

    • Yes, so we can have the Wilpons jerk the fans around even more than they have been for years. Are they nice people? Maybe….but it’s time for a change in the guard regarding ownership. I’m sorry, but I’m sick of seeing this team being the butt of people’s jokes time and time again.

  • Taxpayers indirectly may make investments (over which they have little or no control) but it’s a stretch to expect a return on investments allegedly made by said fans. Fans derive entertainment value. They don’t have a recognized investment role. That’s the kind of logic we might hear from Washington. It doesn’t make sense.

  • look as a fan one can understand wanting the best of everything for your team including the best ownership.

But i’m sorry cause in my opinion that doesn’t mean that the wilpons owe it to me to sell their business.

others may disagree and thats fine to each their own but to me i just at this time cant see where the wilpons owe it to me to sell their team.

  • I would rather see the Wilpons go than see a fire sale involving David Wright. If the Wilpons selling means that we get to keep Jose Reyes (assuming he has a properly Reyes-like year) out of pinstripes, then…so long, Wilpons! Get Mark Cuban on the phone. Even though he’s a douche, at least we’d be competitive.

  • The Wilpons certainly had the wrong people at the helm for far too long no doubt. Now they have brought in some of the brightest people we’ve had in a long time.

No, they haven’t proven they can turn it around yet, NOR, have they proven to be a failure (despite what some self-proclaimed experts claim around here).

  • Not… I hate the wilpons but a couple thousand people petitioning them to give up their team is not going to phase them one bit. The mets have millions of fans. The only thing that is going to stop them from keeping the team barring losing the big suit is if people don’t go to the ballpark. Then you know what’s going to happen? Fire sale, we are going to turn into the pirates. They love the team and it’s more than just a business to them. They will do everything they can to try and keep them. A couple thousand internet dweebs like myself who maybe a couple dozen of hold season tickets and half of them don’t even get to a game every year is not going to help convince them to sell. They probably get more hate mail every day than the amt of people who will sign the petition. No offense

  • Instead of a petition they should be passing around a hat!

Should only take one BILLION people at a buck a pop to buy the team.

    Not prepared to do that?
Not prepared to do anything to get what you want!
