Ruben Tejada, Fernando Martinez Among First Spring Cuts

For those of you hanging onto the hope that infielder Ruben Tejada or outfielder Fernando Martinez might make the team, forget it. They were among the first round of roster cuts and were relocated to the Minor League side of camp this morning.

Joining them will be right-handers Josh Stinson, Tobi Stoner, Manny Alvarez , John Lujan and Armando Rodriguez, infielders Zach Lutz and Jordany Valdespin, outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis and catcher Kai Gronauer.

With those cuts, the Mets have now pared their Spring Roster to 45 players, not including Ronny Paulino.

Outfielders Lucas Duda and Nick Evans survived to play another day, as did infielders Justin Turner and Russ Adams.

  • OK so the Mets in the end feel that they still would rather have Tejada playing SS in AAA. I have no problem with this decision and hope to see Tejada rake in AAA so the Mets have no choice but to bring him up some time during the season.

We still need to see who will be the finalists for the starting 2b job since Tejada was never a real consideration but just had an outside shot.

Castillo, Emaus, Turner or Murphy who will it be?

    • I personally don’t believe he even needs to rake to be brought up sometime this year.

It will depend on what the guys we keep do and how that whole situation works out.

And for the record I expect Castillo to be the opening day starter.
Not because of anything HE has done but because of what the others don’t when wearing the glove.

      • Of course there are a number of scenarios for Tejada being called up. I just used the one I liked best.

        • No you used the one EVERYONE likes best! He HITS! LOL

  • Just because they moved to the other side of the complex doesn’t mean they can’t be brought back if the need arises. Just sends a clear signal that they are slated to start at AAA, unless something changes in the next couple of weeks.

This at least will give them more PT for the rest of ST.

    • So were they cut from the spring roster? The way this author wrote relocated, I never heard that term before.

    • Remember something they aren’t just preparing for the Major League season. They also have to prepare the Minor league teams as well.

SO it makes sense if Tejada is definitly not going to be the starter here to send him down. (or accross as the case may be! LOL)

  • Tejada to the Minors? Did they run this by Bayonne? Just kidding with you, I couldn’t resist.

  • It looks like Duda’s stock just keeps on rising. He might make the Mets go down to the wire if he keeps hitting like this. The question would be who loses out if he were to force the issue and make the team??

    • The only way I see him making the team is if Beltran has to start on the DL, and they have an extended opportunity available.

      • i agree with your scenario as well

    • His stock may be rising but only because Beltran is not 100%.

Truth is Beltran with a bad knee probably runs faster and has more range than Duda does despite the fact Duda is 100% healthy!

He has got a great bat no doubt there.
But if he can’t get to those gappers and turns singles he should field into doubles that got by him that stock is going to tank!
