Phillies Deal With Castillo Is Only A 10-Day Audition
Update:
ESPN is reporting that the deal the Phillies agreed to with Luis Castillo is only for 10-day audition and he has not been promised a spot on their opening day roster.
Original Post 3/20 8:00 PM
According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, recently released second baseman Luis Castillo may be closing in on a deal with the Philadelphia Phillies according to a source.
On the day he officially was eligible to sign, Castillo quickly narrowed his focus and appears poised to join the Philadelphia Phillies, according to a baseball source.
The Phillies are growing concerned with the recent knee woes of All-Star second baseman Chase Utley.
In case you’re wondering, Rubin also says that if Castillo does sign with the Phillies, they will only be responsible for the major league minimum or around $416,000 dollars. The Mets would still be on the hook for the remaining $5.6 million dollars Castillo is owed.

Let me see who would I rather face Utley or Castillo?
Yeah give me Castillo everytime. I hope Castillo gets a ton of playing time for the Phillie cause if he does it means less playing time for Utley.
Go get em Castillo!
With a hole in RF (Brownout), severe age in LF and Catillo at 2B the Phills ARE starting to resemble us. Their rotation if healthy will still be able to support the lack of offense but if any of them go down…..
But they hknow what they are doing no?
Metsie, you heard it here first, many times in the recent weeks and months. Ruben Amaro, Jr. is slowly killing that franchise. I’ve been saying that for quite some time now.
Oh I don’t disagree at all…
I wasn’t really on their bandwagon was just poking some fun at Tag based on comments he made in another thread.
And they just gave him a two year extension. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if the 2013-15 Phillies struggle to win 80 games per season.
Well that just about the time I expect all that pitching to blow up with injuries. Unless they get smart and trade them in two years.
Anytime you give a pitcher more than a 3 year deal your just asking for a hurting.
Unfortunatly they all want a 4 year min and I’ll take it provided I can trade them in Year 2 or 3.
That’s AFTER they blow up, if you ask me. That’s after they leave without leaving behind draft picks to re-stock because they were injured and didn’t pitch well enough to earn Type A status, after Rollins leaves, Howard is useless, Ibanez leaves, Utley is gone. That organization is a mess and they don’t even know it, because everything is rosy right now.
oswalt is likely done after 2011, unless the exercise the 16mill option (and he is still holding together of course).
the bigger question is what happens with Hamels. he is signed through 2011, but I believe he is final year arb eligible for 2012. So, will he sign a big $$ LT deal, or play it out and hope for giant yankee $$ starting in 2013?
Well X, if you ask me Amaro actually knows this which is why he went and bought all that pitching to try and win with a team that is about to be too old to compete anymore.
That doesn’t make him smart as anyone could see the writing on the wall, but he just might save his job if he manages to win one this season before it all turns to crap.
Truth is it already started, Look at all the injuries they had to overcome last year.
If it wasn’t for the fact they could beat on us when we were down they were as out of the playoff picture as we were in July. They got a pitching boost and then some player back and were able to overcome the braves.
Xtree, I think you’re wrong. Let’s not forget that Pat Gillick likely approves any deal. He’s an adviser not only to Ruben Amaro, but also to David Montgomery, the President and General Partner.
Pat Gillick’s record is second to none over the years.
All I can say is…..HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Hey but what if he comes back and makes us regret ever letting him go to our rivals?
Shouldn’t we be concerned?
Yea like he just tipped the scales against us to their favor.
Sorry i just am enjoying what I expect to hear by some in the coming days.
I almost hope he wins the MVP just to see who sticks around and continues to post here! LOL
I root for Murphy to be the ASG 2B for the same reason.
LOL I root for Murphy but mostly because I just want to find some place he can play!
If he fails at 2B the only thing left is trading Wright or making Murphy a catcher.
And his bat is good but not worth getting rid of Wright to get.
Well, if he ends up spending the next couple of years as a lefty bat off the bench, utility guy type at a cheap price, that is still valuable.
but if he wants to do a crash course at catcher, go for it. if nothing else, it will make him a really valuable bench guy!
but really I hope he nails down and keeps the 2B job because it will mean that he is hitting well, and I missed having an offense last year.
My best wishes to Luis on a successful 2012 season wherever he plays. He gave his all for us.
LMFAO. If it wasn’t for that last sentence, I would’ve thought you were serious.
he was. Just that Luis didn’t have much to give in the first place!
You nailed it, stick.
When a guy tries, he shouldn’t be ridiculed or booed. Save those responses for the lazy and malcontent players.
I think it is actually possible that Castillo was was both at different times (trying, and lazy, and possibly a malcontent at both times!)
Problem is, Castillo WAS lazy and malcontent 2 out of the last 3 years he was here. Didn’t help himself when he whined, complained and felt like he was entitled to something…like he was coming off a .300 season when the fact was that he was hitting .235. That was my biggest beef with Castillo. It seems that a lot of people think all Met fans fault Castillo simply for the dropped pop up but me? I don’t give a rat’s ass about that.
You check his BA, OBP, and OPS+ since ’08. Take away that fluke ’09 season, he has been a JOKE. His numbers has been at it’s lowest since his early days with the Fish. He may have tried at times, but at the end of the day, it was time for a change Des.
Castillo’s OPS is not relevant. That’s like asking for Ozzie Smith’s OPS. Those guys are not big extra base hits guys so you don’t need that stat. Just say his AVG, that’s it, most baseball people know the guy didn’t hit 7 HRs or anything like that.
If you want to tell more like OBP or note his doubles or SBs too that’s up to you but his OPS is not worth noting at all because he’s not the kind of hitter to want to know his OPS.
No one mentioned his OPS. Stop instigating. We know he’s not a power threat. You feel the need to remind us of obvious things.
Don’t lie xrtremicon. look one post up from bayonne’s.. bayonne didn’t start anything. . You can apologize or can tell the world you are illiterate.
IZ, reading is fundamental. No one mentioned OPS. Look for yourself. The guy always instigates and all you do is point your finger from behind him like a little lapdog. You’ve never made one comment about baseball, ever.
well, it is relevant since it points out how absolutely dismal his power (slugging) was.
but, if you prefer, he was bad due to his paucity of EB hits, even by the standards of a defensive whiz like ozzie (and castillo is far from being a defensive whiz).
Luis slugging % last year was something like .267. He would have to have a .450 OBP to make up for that!
What evidence do you have that Luis was lazy?
Regarding the charge of being a malcontent, few players don’t say things they later regret. It’s a sign of being extremely competitive. That by the way undermines the claim he was lazy and wanted to pull a kind of Ollie mental disappearing act.
Hitman aren’t you being just a bit unfair there?
First he was not a malcontent Two years ago. He hadn’t lost his job yet. So he was at best a malcontent last year when there was plenty of malcontent going around. Francouer, Barajas, Perez and yes even K-Rod which led to his blowup and beatdown.
That was as much a product of Manuel than of the players themselves. And since they knew Manuel’s days were numbered they took advantage of that.
Yes he hit close to .300 two years ago and had a huge dropoff. But then again so did pretty much the rest of the team. Our Lineup was just too weak for anyone to do well.
Not saying he should have been kept mind you, just trying to point out that Castillo was not as bad as some would have us believe. And it will be interesting to see what he does on a winning hitting ballclub.
Well, I will say this: the day he was cut from the Mets, postgame Keith Hernandez was talking a bit about how Terry had to call Luis into his office because Luis was sulking around because he had to compete for the 2B job, it wasn’t just handed to him like when Uncle Omar was in charge…then he started not taking ground balls on the days when he was DH, and when they finally cut him, all he could say was “they didn’t let me play enough.”
This team’s one hope for success this year is if they operate as a unit. He needed to go if only because he would’ve been the one sighing loudly in the back of the clubhouse while Terry was speaking, and honestly for how sh***y a player he’s become, he needs a change in attitude.
Hopefully the Phils sign Ollie after he’s released. He’ll blow a 7 game lead for them
Ironyyyyyy! What is with the Phillies picking up our cast offs? Pedro Martinez, Valdez,Schnieder, Castillo in the past three seasons? Geez
Don’t forget Figueroa.
Philly……where all washed up, has beens and never made it players go to die.
hahahahaha.
Interesting you all make fun of the Phillies for picking up all those Met rejects, but you all forget the one little fact that those same Phillies you laugh at so much have won how many Eastern Division titles in a row? only 4.. well, its something we’ve done so often so I guess 4 division crowns in a row is nothng for us Mets. We must be the Braves, not the Mets I guess.
Oh hey! Go post on a Phillies website.
will they have to rename that silly little jut out section in RF the “castillo zone” now?
Utley did buy the naming rights, didn’t he?
So when does the Ollie to the Yankee rumors start?
I wonder if Sandy didn’t blunder here a little bit. The Mets had some feelers out that maybe Castillo might actually make the team, seeing as how no one else had grabbed the job. Maybe the Mets could have “traded” Castillo to the Phils for some salary relief. There were rumblings even before Castillo was officially cut about how he might fit on the Phillies, so it was assumed the Phils would be suitors. Even if the Mets just got a million back, they could close the book on Gary Matthews.
It’s probably inconsequrntial, but I wonder if the thought ever crossed Sandy’s mind.
I think it did but I also think the Phills knew he was not going to get the job from all the talk that was going on.
This is just one small reason why I get on the folks who incessantly complained about both castillo and Perez getting shots.
Even if someone were interested enough to give up some cash or a garbage player in return they would hold back knowing that fans were ready to crucify the FO for even having them show up to ST!
Some people really don’t understand how much what we say can determine what a GM can or can not do all because we feel the need to express ourselves!
Or how much complaining about players and bitching constantly can wear on a team of players and inspire them to not care if they stay anymore and phone in their effort!
Sometimes if you want good things to happen it just pays to keep your mouth shut!
LOL
…and the 2 years Castillo hit well for the Mets – .296 in 2007 & .302 in 2010 he had 199 & 247 ABs respectively so maybe it could work out for Phils if he winds up filling in for Utley
you meant 2009 there.
even with the high BA, he still did not have much power (but compared to 2010, he was a slugger), and could generously be called “almost adequate”
But 2010, probably a more relevant comparable at age 35, he was historically terrible. And odds are his little previous power isn’t coming back (and there was certainly no sign of it in ST), nor is his range.
for a 35 YO 2B with bad wheels, that was hurt and terrible 2 of the last 3 years, 2007 is pretty much irrelevant at this point.
yes, 2009 thanks for that.
I’m just saying maybe he could be more effective playing as a part timer with the Phils. That’s something he said he wouldn’t do here but he’ll have to do there as long as Utley is healthy. He hit his best in when he didn’t play full seasons here.
actually, you had the wrong ABs for 2009 also. He played ~145 gsmes, and 480+ ABs. So he certainly was playing full seasons.
and 2007 he played every day after the trade, and in IIRC 135 or so games total.
with the mets, the only time he was actually part time was last september when he was benched. Other than that, he either played or was hurt.
castillo was gone at year’s end for sure, it is time to look to the future.
castillo is an upgrade for the phillies with regard to range, even with utley. if you watched philly last year, you’d realize that utley really can’t play the position anymore. he can possibly play third, left, or DH at this point.
the fact that he signed with philly is evidence that utley is in real bad shape.
it’s a minor league deal ? he may never even play for philly.
all in all, i’m happy philly took him. he really wasn’t a bad dude like ollie is – i’m happy for him.
Haha. I called it. Phillies signing Castillo. That is all.
If he thinks Mets fans were rough, wait till he gets to Philly. They will eat him alive.
