Thoughts On Luis Castillo’s Release And Reactions

The New York Mets made it official and announced that they have released 35-year-old second baseman Luis Castillo this morning. Castillo had one year left on his contract that will pay him $6 million dollars, but that doesn’t seem to matter considering all things. Here are some comments made by Sandy Alderson while speaking to reporters: “After a long evaluation during spring training, after consulting with Terry and the coaching staff, I made a recommendation to ownership [...]

Carlos Beltran Gets Another Cortisone Shot On Left Knee

According to several beat writers via Twitter, Sandy Alderson just told reporters that outfielder Carlos Beltran has received another cortisone shot on his left knee (the good knee) and will be out at least another 2-3 days. Beltran still says he will be ready for Opening Day. Since playing one game as a DH, Beltran has missed 15 days.

METS PRESS RELEASE METS RELEASE LUIS CASTILLO FLUSHING, N.Y., March 18, 2011 – The New York Mets today announced that they have released 35-year-old second baseman Luis Castillo. The 5-11, 191-pound switch-hitter had one year left on his contract. “This was baseball decision,” said Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson. “I met with Terry (Collins) and made a recommendation to Jeff (Wilpon) and Jeff approved on behalf of ownership.” Castillo was acquired by the Mets from [...]

Ram’s Rambles: Heartwarming Stories – Beltran Edition

It’s important now and then to step back from the criticism, the anger, the yelling, the name calling…and remember something that is completely forgotten among all the opinions in the sports world. Baseball players are human – no more and no less than you and me. Carlos Beltran is a player who gets a lot of heat thrown his way; for what reason, I never understood. I will always respect Carlos Beltran and I think [...]

Mets Cut 8 Players Including Dillon Gee and Boof Bonser

The Mets just announced that they optioned Dillon Gee to minor league camp. They also reassigned righties Boof Bonser and Ryota Igarashi, lefthanded pitcher Taylor Tankersley, catchers Dusty Ryan and Raul Chavez, infielder Russ Adams and outfielder Jason Pridie. I guessed them all except for Dusty Ryan. I guess they have no more split squad games on the schedule. He was cut instead of Justin Turner. And like I said earlier this morning, both Castillo [...]

Alderson Says 8-9 Players Will Be Cut By Weekend

metsnotes

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson told the New York Post that the team would cut eight or nine players during these next two days. That’s a lot of warm bodies, so this next round will leave plenty for us to discuss. Lets do some math… Currently there are 45 players in major league camp, including 12 non-roster invitees. Here is the breakdown. • Pitchers – 22 total (seven non-roster) • Catchers – 5 total (two non-roster) [...]

Do Mets Have A Better Option Than Luis Hernandez

Mets manager Terry Collins has said that he would like to get each of his potential second base candidates some more at-bats over the next few days as he starts to whittle down the playing field. Reports surfaced earlier this week that Collins wanted Luis Hernandez to be the Mets starter at second base. However, those reports were quickly shot down and might have only been done to light a fire under the other candidates. [...]

Mets Not Interested In Eckstein

According to Jon Heyman, the Mets have made it clear to second baseman David Eckstein that they are not interested in his services. This is not surprising given the fact that the Mets are itching to dump Castillo, one of the few players with almost the exact same type of play as Eckstein. Both of them have absolutely no power, are past their prime and hold little offensive value anymore. Their only major offensive upside is that both [...]
