And while I am a big proponent of Jose being a base runner more often, his entire value is not based only on that. He doesn't even have to hit leadoff.

When you look at the number of guys who can both play SS defensively AND hit, there are very few guys. Jose is one of just a couple. At 28 next off season he will be in huge demand and the loss of offense at SS added to RF, 2B and possibly even LF will never allow us to score enough runs to win 90+ games.

If we are ever going to field a complete team we cannot lose any of our 2 way players.

Those numbers are only tickets sold. Another big loss of revenue for the Mets were people with tickets not even going to the game. Each ticket you have actually sold and then wasn't used costs on average about 50 more dollars lost.

If only 25% (and I'll bet it was a hell of a lot more than that) don't show that right there is 600,000 X $50.00= Thirty million dollars.

So if all you can do is go to 5 games a year with the least expensive ticket it's still an inexpensive night out and with lower expectations just go and enjoy yourself. Hang out with your friends, girlfriend or wife. Walk around, have something to eat, meet up with some of your friends. Spend a buck while watching and rooting for Reyes, Wright, Pagan, Ike, Thole, Pelf and Niese, otherwise your only chance to see Reyes might be 3 times a year or God forbid 9 times a year.

Des I agree but I think that will largely depend on HOW MUCH and that also depends on HOW MANY show up.

If the Madoff thing goes away then the MLB is way more likely to give them the credit because they won't have to worry about getting it back.

But no matter what happens in court if the fans do not show up there is no way the small market teams will be happy or rubber stamp a loan to a team who is spending more than they can generate.

They will say screw you cut salary like we do and Reyes will go to one of them who CAN afford him without a bridge loan!

Metsie, a very good post. I see it differently regarding your statement:
"They have borrowed money from MLB to pay for last year. I am sure MLB would like to get that money back this year if possible. They sure won’t lend them more and they sure won’t be too happy if we don’t pay off that debt and then go make a SS one of the highest paid players in baseball!"

The green shades men behind the accounting desks look at every opportunity in terms os Return on Investment and risks. I think more money would be lent if it meant resuscitating a showcase franchise, which is what the Mets have. This would be even more likely if our economy were to recover more quickly than heretofore and positive financial projections were made.

Madoff issues aside (cause I think they are going to win that case)...

If you really want them to commit to Reyes and his 100+Mil probable contract, we are really going to have to show them that we will go to the games and help support that move for the entire length of the contract.

Think about this. They have borrowed money from MLB to pay for last year. I am sure MLB would like to get that money back this year if possible. They sure won't lend them more and they sure won't be too happy if we don't pay off that debt and then go make a SS one of the highest paid players in baseball!

I like reyes and want him to stay as much as the next guy but I realize that his staying will rely on two things.
1) a competitive team that makes signing Reyes to big money worth investing in
2) People show up to the games and spend enough money so that the Mets can pay off those debts to MLB and can project that if Attendance stays the same they can afford to pay Reyes and anyone else they might need.

People think that baseball is not a democratic process but they are wrong!
You vote on what they do can do and will do with every ticket you purchase and use!

Chicago won 4 fewer games than we did last year.
Sold out 92% of their seats while we sold out 77.1% of ours.
They had total attendance of 3,062,973 we had 2,559,738 despite the fact our stadium holds close to 10000 more seats per game! They averaged 37814 people per game, we had only 32,401 per game

If your concerned with who they sign or how much they spend then consider that for the reasons why they might not before you go looking to blame Madoff!

I think the Mets would be making a colossal strategic mistake to rid themselves of either Jose Reyes or David Wright. It would tear our Mets community apart. The days of Walter O'Malley and Branch Rickey are over. The team is part of a community, rather than the team being the prime mover in determining which community (e.g., Los Angeles) it chooses to entertain with the great game of baseball.

Both Jose and David have grown up in our community in Queens and deserve to be elder statesmen in it one day.
