King Felix’s No Trade Clause

What do Lebron James and Felix Hernandez have in common? That’s right – two kings who don’t want to come to NY. Granted, only one of those player is actually a King in my eyes…

In any case, I just wanted to put this short piece up because of something I noticed on MLBTR.

Mariners ace Felix Hernandez can block trades to ten teams, and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports learned eight of them: the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Cubs, Angels, Dodgers, Rangers, and Phillies.

Although we haven’t heard any news at all about the Mets trading for Felix Hernandez (or any other team for that matter), it’s just a good time to stop any seeds before they grow. I’m not even sure if the Mets would have enough to acquire Hernandez in a trade but a man can dream, right?

In any case, it’s interesting that he can veto a team to teams that would be willing to commit decent money; the Yankees especially. It almost seems as if he doesn’t want to play in a big market team. It’s not my place to assume however – just to throw the point out there to anyone who hasn’t heard.

So life goes on…and it makes me think. On the topic of trading, do you think the Mets will be buyers or sellers at the deadline?

  • “In any case, it’s interesting that he can veto a team to teams that would be willing to commit decent money”

He can block a trade there, but it doesn’t mean he will, and he certainly can sign there as a free agent. He just might be covering himself to make sure he definately wants to go to a media frenzy instead of being told he has to go. Those teams on that list ain’t in Kansas anymore, Toto.

    • Your point is valid. It’s not a guaranteed thing but I get the feeling that he feels comfortable in Seattle and the GM hasn’t been very keen about trading him at all.

Free agency is another story. I don’t know if he’ll ever reach it – depending on if he gets a nice extension or not.

      • He’s on a extension now that will end after 2014. His pay looks like this for the duration of the contract: 2011:$10M, 2012:$18.5M, 2013:$19.5M, 2014:$20M.

The crazy thing is he’ll only be 28 when he’s up for FA after the 2014 season. He’ll turn 29 right as the 2015 season starts. So if contracts stay the way they’ve been handed out, he’s a viable candidate for the first $200 million pitcher.

    • I think we may be missing the forrest for the tree here.

Think about it from a BUSINESS perspective.

You agree to pitch for a certain amount of money for a small market team because you know they don’t have the big money to put out and you do not have to deal with a shark infested media.

You get a No Trade clause so that they can’t just force you to move someplace you may not want to go.

Did he place the “Big Market” teams on his list because he doesn’t want to go there?
Or did he do it so that if he DOES get traded to them he has some leverage with the BIG MARKET team to get paid BIG MARKET salary?

It is a smart business decision for any player who takes less money to play in a less stressful enviornment to list the Big Market guys MOST LIKELY to want to trade for top pitching (because they can afford to) in his no trade clause.

For one it costs more to live in a big market and two the extra stress can be compensated accordingly!

SO because those big market teams are on his no trade list, and he can waive that clause whenever he wants, chances are he will want to waive that clause right after they agree to renegotiate the contract to pay him according to the market he will be going to!

Just smart business if you ask me!

      • Thing is, this isn’t football. You can’t renegotiate in MLB. They can extend his contract, but his contract will remain as is till after 2014, regardless if he’s traded or not.

        • I think that he ( his agent ) would demand an extension before waiving his no-trade clause to a big market club. And the small market clubs can’t pay him anyhow, so he basically has the board covered.

It’s his only leverage until he reaches free agency. It looks to me like a standard strategy, and probably not a story.

As for the Mets ( and Dodgers, Rangers, and perhaps the Cubs also ), he’s probably just not sure he would get paid.

        • You can renegotiate your contract at any point you want.
Where did you get that from?

We could extend or renegotiate with Reyes right now nothing would stop us!

          • Contracts cannot be re-negotiated in MLB. Ask A-Rod and the Red Sox if contracts can be re-negotiated. Hernandez is making $10 million this year, and that’s final. Once the name is on the dotted line, it’s locked in. No re-negotiations.

      • i agree with you metsie. all i see here is a list of teams most likely to dole out big contracts, or with recent financial problems.

sounds like his agent made that list up, and leaked it too.

      • I should have added, it’s smart business once he hits free agency, but this doesn’t help his current contract status at all.

  • The question is how much money will get him to change his mind?

  • just because he put teams on the list doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to go there. No need to put the pirates say on it, since they will never pony up for him anyway!

most likely, he puts teams that are likely to trade for him, so he controls the process.

  • Good question about buyers or sellers. Even when it was apparent early on in the 2009 season the Mets weren’t going anywhere, Omar didn’t do either. Then again, hard to trade guys who are on the DL.

2010 was the same deal though. Don’t know how much of this was Omar or the Wilpons though. If the Wilpons had decided that Omar was going end of 2010, they might not have let him make any types of these deals.

This year? If the media is to be believed and Reyes is gone at the trade deadline (along with Beltran, if he can be moved), looks like that question might already be answered.

From samples I’ve read around the Met blog sphere, the majority of Met fans want Reyes resigned. If he isn’t going to be interesting to see how the FO spins this one.

    • they still must have had a few guys to trade though, right? 1 year, not part of the futures types. Frenchy was 1, too bad they got nothing back. not sure who else they could have moved. Pedro F?

Different story of course trading a core guy like Reyes!

Could be plenty of guys this year if they are out of the race come toward the deadline. Beltran of course, Reyes if they want to get radical. But beyond that, bench guys, pen arms, even SP (Young or Capuano) could all be in play, and a way to get an instant influx of younger talent for the minors without negatively impacting the future (reyes excepted, of course).

    • Yes at this point in space/time yes most met fans want to see reyes resigned.
By June it could be a very different story!

NY Fans turn on a dime!

  • The no trade clause may just be a negotiation tool. He named a bunch of big market teams because he knows he can milk them for more money. The Yankees bid against themselves to secure Sabathia. Hernandez may see what and Santana got by looking reluctant and decide to hold on to that chip.

    • You beat me here! LOL
