Some great athletes have played either baseball or football (or both) over the years but never developed into their full potential because of injuries. Bo Jackson comes to my mind. His hip injury ruined his baseball career and his NFL career.

Sample sizes. Lots of guys have lousy ST numbers. Emaus and Turner have the most upside and Turner had options.

Not liking this Emaus pick at all. Now he is batting .216 worse than all 5 original candidates.

I guess the winner in a Mets position battle goes to the worst hitter not the best.

For a guy with 5 years in the minors being given a golden opportunity to win a ML starting job he didn’t look to me like he came out there to win one. I didn’t get to see very much of him but what I did left me a little underwhelmed.

To be honest….not that much yet. I just don’t like the way he carries himself on the field and to me he does seem like a guy who would put and give you an attitude but that’s just my evaluation so far.

The original post about that I got from Jim Mancari and he’s done a lot more research on the subject that me. In short, of what I seen I don’t like his body language on the field so far. We will see.

We’ll see, he was also very late covering 1B on the pickoff. I admit i’m curious to see what he’s about but so far i don’t like the way he carries himself on the field. I believe in the “attitude problem” lack of effort tag that was attached to him…we will see.

Emaus already made a real nice turn at 2b today. I don’t think he’s as bad in the field as people make him out to be.

I can’t say I’m mad about Emaus getting the job. Hu will probably see the second most time at 2nd as a defensive replacement, but we will see Murphy at 2nd, as well as 1st, 3rd, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Murphy was out in left field some time this year.

Never assuming to know (unlike a few) who would win the starting 2b job from the beginning I can only say that I am glad it was not Castillo that got the job.

All the other candidates have their plus and minuses and in the end if it is Emus then I hope he does well cause if anything he knows Tejada and Havens are hopefully not that far away from possibly taking that job if he struggles.

Ransam, you are correct. I am a little venomous about Murphy. I agree with you, the man can hit with anybody. I don’t hate him at all and love his work ethic. Problem is he has no position. The Mets have had a bad history with trying to find a spot for all hit no glove types in the past i.e. Kevin Miller, Greg Jeffries, etc. To be honest, I just like breaking them off on a couple of posters on here becuase, they blasted last month for simply saying that Murphy could not start at second base.

metsr1… You really think that if Emaus is the OD 2B that means he’s THE GUY? What it means is; his ‘try out’ lasts a little longer. If/When the Mets offense struggles, and he struggles along with it, they’ll be looking for someone to provide some stick… and that will be Murphy.

Your venomous posts whenever the Murphy topic arises are disturbing. You want to beat a guy down when all he has done is work hard, and has been one of the top producers this ST? You can check behind me, but who has the most rbi and doubles in ST? Not to mention a BA over .300. Emaus has really shown he’s superior with his stellar D, and great offensive prowess. So I’m with K Maxx in saying, “Don’t be so smug.” It’s a looooong season.

Brad Emaus hit and hit quite well for the Blue Jays in ST both last year and the previous year. 2010 ST stats- 40AB .400BA .478OBP .978OPS 0HR 9RBI 42B 03B 2009 ST stats- 49AB .306BA .370OBP 1.064OPS 4HR 13RBI 52B 13B. Brad was probably pressing this ST given his 1st real shot at the bigs. It also did not help that he wasn’t given consecutive starts in a row earlier in camp to try to find a rhythm at the plate. It was always going to be JP’s boy at 2B as scouts call him. This year’s ST offensive stats had little to do with the 2B evaluation process.

Here is what I just posted on another MMO thread.

A little more patience without more bad luck again is needed at 2B. We just may have our guy, a particularly high ceiling guy, in Reese Havens. His overall minor league career shows one home run per 25.6 PA. This is outstanding.

In 2010 Havens played at St. Lucie and Binghamton. At his last stop in Binghamton, he was hitting .338/.400/.662 with 6 homers in 75 PA. The he had his oblique issue and was shut down. Against the pretty good competition at Binghamton, Reese had one homer every 12.5 PA. Overall last year, he averaged one homer per 15.6 PA.

Just how good are Havens numbers? His overall minor league PA/HR ratio is better than those of Utley (32.0), Uggla (37.2) and Cano (51.4). Utley had more than 1800 minor league PAs, Uggla had almost 2400, and Cano about 2100 PAs. Reese has had just 667 minor league PAs. Havens sample size is small. But we may already have our man for the next 6-10 years.

The nut job resurfaces whenever he can knock Daniel Murphy. I’m still waiting for his sources for what he claimed Jose Reyes said about Daniel Murphy. What was your source, Metsr1? Or is it just more stuff you’ve made up?
