No Berb but I also haven't seen anything in his past to show that last year was the norm either...

Every player has a career year at some point, where he outdoes his career average performance and makes up for those years when he was under that career performance.

But considering how long it took him to have that year you sure can't count on it repeating.

He may be close, he may be the same and hell he may even improve because he figured it out or merely finally got the opportunity.

but too many people look at a year and say hey thats what that guy can do without ever thinking about if he can keep doing it or it was just a case of everything falling into place and the stars alligning in a way they never align again!

I certainly think he can do what he did last year again, My only question is will he?
If not we have the next name that will get dragged through the sewer around here despite what everyone said about him this year and last!

It's so nice to hear Beltran is accepting the RF move.
Now what happens when we find out Pagan was a fluke and goes back to his old ways?

I know everyone is jumping for joy that Beltran bit the bullet and gave everyone what they wanted...

As they say be careful what you wish for!

I am with you on this one Agee, here we have what all have clamored for for all of 2010 and coming into this year and he does it and instead of just accepting it, Doug has to find a motive for it and take down a player that played hurt in his early years with Mets so what the heck at least Doug brought some traffic here but had to use his anti-Beltran bias to get any feed back.

Hey Doug why don't you tell us how you really feel about Beltran? Don't hold back cause the truth will set you free.
I guess that there must not be any other Mets news so you pull out the tried and true Beltran is selfish card.
Great blogging, maybe you can next start on Bay when his contract is up.

He, Beltran, had a hard time when he first signed but when on the field he was the best CF ever to play for Mets, yes even better than Agee.

Injuries are a part of the game and the fact that mgmt decided to sign so many over the hill vets after Beltran signed should not be laid at his feet.

It's not the way I want to look at it Vinny. It's the way it was. Nothing in life or in baseball happens entirely on it's own. It's not like we had exactly the same team before he got hurt and exactly the same team minus just him. Those first half wins were partly accumulated with Reyes and Delgado in the line up too. Think they didn't help?

It's not as cut and dried as your making it out to be.

We were 21-15 when Delgado joined Reyes on the DL so from the point that we were down two of our 4 most potent offensive players until Carlos went down our record was under .500 already.

21-15 vs. 14-18. From that point on we were losing by field goals and touchdowns.

Not much any one player could have done about that.

Well, whatever way you want to look at it, we had a WINNING before he was hurt, and we had a LOSING record after he was hurt. Having his bat in the lineup made a big difference - he was having one of the best seasons in the league before he got hurt. Everything could have been a lot different if he was healthy.

With Beltran missing 1/2 of the season and the Mets ultimately being 22 games below .500 that would mean that Carlos would have to account for 11 extra wins over one half of a season all by himself. He may be a great player but that's just crazy.

We had just lost 2/3 to the Yankees WITH HIM including a Santana start 15-0. We lost by 4 and by 3 runs to Milwaukee who had beaten us out for the Wild Card the year before when we had Carlos. We lost by 5, 3, 2 against Philly and then by 8 the next night against LA. Two nights later they beat us by 9. After taking 2/3 from Cinn we lost 3/4 to ATL by 2, 11 and 6. It's really a leap of faith to think that one player, even Carlos could account for 20 or more extra wins a year all by himself. Maybe Babe Ruth in the deadball era but c'mon.

So we just happend to do bad as soon as Beltran went down? Our bad record had nothing to do with his injury? Shortly after he got hurt we got swept by the Yankees, lost 2 out 3 to the Brewers, and then get swept again by the Phillies.....that would have happend anyway if we had Beltran? I don't think so...

We were still able to do good when Beltran was healthy, but as soon as he went down, it killed our season.

And how do you know if we had Beltran healhty we wouldn't have finished above .500?

With an everyday line up of Santos, Murphy, Castillo, Cora/Valdez/Berroroa, Wright, Sheffield/Sullivan, Pagan and Francouer a .500 record wasn't sustainable. We started off slow, didn't get above .500 until May 7th, reached our best record 28-21 on May 31st and it was all downhill after that. 3 1/2 weeks.

By the time Beltran went down for good in 2009 Delgado and Reyes were long gone, the original LFer was now playing 1B while Sheffield and Sullivan played LF. the RFer was soon to be traded for Francouer, Putz was on the DL, Santos was playing catcher, Schneider was really bad, Cora, Berrora, Hernandez, Valdes, A. Reyes and Green would soon took turns in the IF, Murphy went through a long period of adjustment at the plate, Wright floundered, Castillo hit a punchless .300, Reed, Ollie and Maine watched from the bench, Castro, Redding and Livan were cut, O'day given away, Thole caught the soft tossers and was pinch hit for before K-Rod started stretching out, Parnell worked on his one pitch, Tatis played everywhere.

Johan and P. Feliciano were co-MVP's. Pagan's 2nd half and Murphy's last 2 months were good to see, the rest of it was just a blur.
