The guys they have competing for the position have not fielded the position even better than Castillo (who was just cut) and their offense has been awful!

Thats why Hernandez is in the mix because he has as much bat as anyone else they are trying but at least he can field the position.

But yeah, if it is a recurrance of the oblique injury, that isn’t good.

hopefully he is playing again soon, and in the minors, he can build up to full speed gradually if needed.

Sandy and Terry are still indecisive at this time? I have some difficulty believing that. They know what they’re going to do. What the hell is their agenda? There must be more between them — and I don’t mean they’re disagreeing — than meets the eyes. Our new front office guys have been around baseball for a long, long time. I want to know the story they’re not revealing.

That is, the braintrust has a gut feeling that he is going to produce more than his historical numbers.

Like I said before, IMO if the oblique hadn’t flared up last June (thanks to the now shaved rib), he would have been called up last year, and likely gotten all the PT that went to Tejada later in the year.

so, if he is healthy and not restricted at all to start the season, stays on the field with no issues, and hits anything like he did last year, why not get him up?

He went to a major college program, and is not particularly young, so might as well utilize him if he looks ready.

Seriously, Havens might now be on the road to staying healthy and contributing on the ML level sooner rather than later.

I know he’s got limited time in the minors, due to that injury.
However, Ike wasn’t expected to make an appearance either so early last year but did so out of desperation.

Still fairly young (27/28), former top prospect, had a very good year a few years back (2007 with Cleveland), but had some injuries since then. But, having a very good spring (to the extent that if he was in Met camp, the job would have been anointed already!)

With Utley out, he may end up making the team to play 2B, but I imagine there are some other guys in the same boat scattered around that could end up being better than what we have left now!

If they have decided, they are keeping it under wraps for a good reason. Such as, they might have had a few nibbles on Castillo, and are trying to keep him in play. Or, they are trying to deke the jays into thinking they are hanging onto Emaus. Who knows?

But most likely, whatever option they were hoping/planning on taking the job, just hasn’t done enough to get the final OK yet!

And at this point, why get hung up on the various writers speculating (IOW, making their own guess up and passing them off as based on something substantive)?

until the FO comes out and specifically says something, or they at least set the 25 man roster, everyone is in the mix.

Hernandez though, based on his career body of work, is not the answer to any question but “who do you call up mid year when all your MI have gone down and you are desperate”?

I also would not be surprised to see a late entry into the mix. Pretty soon, guys are going to get cut from every camp. Entirely possible a better option with another team gets squeezed out (numbers game), and the Mets could grab him. They obviously aren’t enamored enough of any of the current guys to come out and say we have a winner!

Murphy? Sure, he might botch a play here and there, but overall, his bat should be such a huge upgrade over slappy or Hernandez that he will create more wins then he could possibly lose.
