I heard someone call into WFAN this week who said they were in Port St. Lucie watching ST. This caller said he thought Daniel Murphy would get himself killed at 2B because he was too slow on the pivot ... which is how Murphy suffered his most recent knee injury.

I think I'll shoot myself in the head if Luis Castillo ends up our Opening Day second baseman.

Murphy as a catcher with his newly acquired brace on his knee? Probably not likely.

If Ruben Tejada hit better, he'd win the job, at least until Reese Havens arrives. All this talk about a bulked up Tejada doesn't address if he's gotten better enough to be offensively adequate and it doesn't address if the bulk hampers him defensively. Neither is known yet.

The team has already made a 2B decision. It is likely to be affirmed or changed in 2-3 weeks. Only Terry and Sandy matter at this point.

Well it's really no mystery as to what Murphy's deficiencies and strengths are. He can hit and no one know if he can field 2B, 3B yes he would be ok his natural position. But if he continues to show he has problems turning the DP or getting to a ball he should get to or have all of that afffect his bat then the chances of you seeing him as an everyday anything is slim to none.

What may actually happen is he is not the opening day starting 2B and Castillo or Emaus is. He will be a mid game PH for Emaus (who is likely to bat 7th or 8th at best!) and by midseason hope that Murphy gets comfortable enough making those moves that he can take over the everyday 2B duties.

It really is so inconsequential who starts at 2B! We know we aren't going to get Gold Glove from anyone but Tejada there. If he hits he might even make the team!

And whatever Murphy hits better than say Castillo or Emaus is not going to automatically turn us into Division champs.

Yes it's the ONLY everyday position that is up for grabs. That should say more to you about how unimportant who fills that role is than anything else. We have a decent hitter at every other position on the field!

If they hit like they should then even a .200 hitting Tejada will be ENOUGH!
If they stay Healthy is the major question that people should be worrying about.
Right now more than half of the guys in the mix for the 4th and 5th Starter are coming off pretty major surgery and down time.
Our Ace is out for at LEAST a half a season.

We can't even say who is going to be in the pen without first figuring out who is the starter!
So I really don't understand why anyone cares who wins the starting job at 2B!

The only thing that should matter is they can field the ball and keep that walking wounded on the mound out of trouble.

I know Collins wants bat but if he needs that bat to win then he has MUCH bigger problems than who he picks to play 2B!

Interesting that this comes not long after Wally Backman said that he loves Murphy's work habits, he's getting a lot better, and that's he's in the mix "for sure". However, he also said that Murph's gotta work on his range, footspeed, quickness, and turning double plays. All in all, he feels comfortable with Murph playing 2nd base right now.

That's looking at things from the most optomistic viewpoint. With that bench Reyes could never get a day off. If Turner could both hit and defend SS and 2B he wouldn't have been DFA'd by Baltimore and Cincinnatti or at the very least he would have been a backup MIer somewhere else. You have to have a competent SS or your going to run Reyes into the ground and then you'll have to bring someone up anyway and there goes the year.

I don't have an opinion on Emaus but it doesn't seem to me that he's come here to win the job. I'd like to see a little of Turner and I wish they had brought him up last September. He was hitting great and what was the idea of playing Arias?

Turner does have experience at 2B which means an awful lot and no options left. The whole competition can change daily but right now the least defensive you could go would be Murphy/Turner but would still need Hu or Hernandez for back up SS. That's too many people unless Paulino never shows and you could throw the chest protector over one of them. Better get Thole some extra gatorade though if you do that.

Read the AP report in the New York Times. Murphy comes early and stays late to work on his footwork. This kid will get the 2nd base job because he will not give up. He has Terry Collins on his side and I see Evans and Turner with Hairston and Harris on the bench. Turner can play S/S,3rd and 2nd base. Evans can play 1st,3rd and LF. Turner can hit and plays a good 2nd base better than Emaus.

I hope Murphy gets his fielding situation worked out but I will go on record now and say if he does not win the starting position at 2B then his best destiny is to go down to the Minors and learn how to be a Catcher where most guys who have no glove and plenty of Bat can become a HOF player...

Piazza came up as a 1B and his fielding wasn't all that great. Lasorda told him to try being a catcher where his Bat would make him an asset and make him a good prospect for the MLB.

He did and became one of the best hitting catchers in MLB history!

If this 2B experiment with Murphy doesn't work out I think a move to catcher is his best chance. Unless of course someone wants to entertain trading away Wright (ok Wright haters this isn't an invitation)!
