Yep it is the main reason. But when you have more options than can fit it is the time to make a deal and trade for something else we do not have a lot of talent at.

Like packaging Evans and Misch to Balt for a 2B and Beato's rights so he has options we can exercise!

I believe so. I have seen it referenced a few times.

not thinking they will do it, but if they really had 8 guys they want to keep, it might be the only way to do it.

I also think that buccholz should probably be the primary 8th inning guy if they are going to have one (sharing time with Izzy to keep them fresh if he makes the team too). leaving Parnell as a 6th/7th inning guy/glorified roogy.

Does Parnell still have a minor league option left? Not a popular idea I'm sure but does give the team some flexibility in terms of keeping someone otherwise likely to be lost.

at this point, emaus is obviously a lock.

beato is starting to look really attractive, and not just due to the idea of keeping more young talent in the system. He just looks like he is winning a job.

Not real concerned about losing Acosta. They got him off the scrap heap last year, and he will likely be there again (or some other guy just like him).

and I would rather keep the 24 YO with a live arm and upside than a late 30s guy that is probably going to be iffy on a game to game basis. or even someone like Boyer, who has pretty much proven to be a journeyman.

But, if they do want to play the options game to keep as many arms as possible, they could keep boyer and acosta, and send Parnell to AAA to be the closer, and work on perfecting a 2nd or 3rd pitch.

also possible they decide Izzy isn't quite fully ready to go, and try to stash him on the DL to start the year.

K rod/parnell/beato/Buccholz/Carrasco/Byrdak/Izzy is quite likely what they hit opening day with.

http://www.metsminorleagueblog.com/15-rhp-pedro-beato/

Interesting read.
I like guys who throw hard. It made me notice Parnell in the first place. I can still picture him throwing 100+ against Boston last year.

Beato tops out at 97 MPH which is appealing and apparently...
"Andy McCullough wrote that he has a four-seamer, a two-searmer, a cutter, a curveball and a changeup. His breaking ball has been described as short and nasty at times."

That sounds like the mold for a reliever that I want.
