Alderson Wont Make Trade Or Promote Duda or F-Mart If Beltran’s Out

According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, Sandy Alderson does not believe that Carlos Beltran will open the season on the disabled list. Well that’s comforting to know, but this isnt:

But the GM added that he’s not in the market for a right fielder at this point and would be more inclined to use a combination of Scott Hairston and Willie Harris in right field than a Triple-A prospect (Fernando Martinez or Lucas Duda) in Beltran’s absence.

I thought that was an odd stance for Sandy Alderson to take or at least admit to at this stage of the game.

Rubin adds that it bodes well for “on-the-bubble Nick Evans”, who might have a difficult time making a five-man bench without an injury.

So, Scott Hairston and Willie Harris it is.

  • What is so odd about all that…

What other reason would Alderson have for bringing in Scott Hairston and Willie Harris, other than to be used to spell players and play for injured players.

Regardless of ones worries about Beltran, Bay is also coming off a season ending concussion and he isn’t exactly ballerina-esque in the outfield. These guys were brought in to be cheap, semi-productive replacements if one of the three core outfielders goes out.

Now if we run into a situation where two or more of the core 3 outfielders is out for an extensive period, then maybe we can start talking about looking at bringing in a starting outfielder, but to throw up red flags about the Mets not actively seeking a full time outfielder just because Beltran has a sore knee today seems a bit excessive.

Not to mention the Mets are not looking to expand payroll anymore since they will hopefully use Beltran, Castillo, and Perez’s freed up money to acquire Albert Pujols in the offseason. (God-Willing)

    • Very good points.

    • Well for one those players are defensive players have no bats to speak of. They both batted under .200 last year. Can we afford to replace Beltran’s 30-35 homeruns with 0-5 homeruns, and his 120 RBI to 38?

      • Who says we’re replacing anything? For all we know, Beltran will be in RF on Opening Day.

Or say he does miss a week. Do we trade to get someone to fill in for 5 games?

    • HaHaHaHa…you little metsies are so amusing. You wiull buy any line of manure spewiing from the mouth of that over the hill and out of touch birth certificate checker of a gm…. sure if omar said he’s put hariston or harris in right field you’d demand his firing… the old roidal lovin gm says it and you buy it ….. has he sold you some bride in Brooklyn. So funny. Metsies…you really deserve the cellar you are moving into permenaently..

      • I definately don’t by my brides from Brooklyn. I enjoy the more exotic things in like, if you get my drift.

        • Strippers? Always been my favorite food!

    • Pujols? really? did u miss the announcements that Minaya is gone, Picard’s attempting to address the National Debt @ Wilpon expense, etc. Scotty until u realize we’re in a holding pattern that’s unlikely to do anything noteworthy until this Picard mess fades out, you’re in for a big bucket full of DISAPPOINTMENT! Do u have any recollections from 2001,2002? if so dust them off! they’re back in vogue in Flushing. Instead of wishing upon a Pujols you’d best pray for a White Knight to make Sterling Partners an offer they can’t possibly refuse for the entire kit & kaboodle. That’s your path back to relevancy NOT PHAT ALBERT in or out of his can.

How can u dismiss ALL the tragic financial news of the past few months? Tantamount to Reyes losing a leg, Wright struck blind & Davis having a stroke & u think Pujols is an option?
Sterling Enterprises is doing everything in their power to appear destitute before Cuomo sits them across from Picard.

  • Hairston and Harris-quality OFers that’s why Sandy got them.I don’t know why Washington and SD let them go. This is exactly why Sandy got them.

    • Ha ha Thatwillie harris will win mvp.. guys who hit below the mendoza line are like that, and in such demand. a few roids after the wee wee test and willie will hit 205. Hail to the cellar metsie fans!!!!!

  • This proves what I’ve been saying all along and once again I’m proven right. When I took offense to comments made that Duda would start the season in AAA according to Alderson and Collins, most on this site said I took them out of context.

I said why would you make comments like that before spring training I said? But the smarties all told me that I was reading too much into it. TOO MUCH MY ASS!

Duda, Fmart, Tejada, Mejia NEVER HAD A CHANCE!!!

AND YET CASTILLO AND PEREZ HAVE GOTTEN EVERY OPPORTUINITY TO STICK AND MAKE THE TEAM!

So go ahead all you lame brains, go ahead and love on your new additions on offense Harris and Hairston and Paulino. Have fun with that!

Thank god we still have plenty of Omar Minaya bats we can count on.

    • I don’t quite get what you’re saying. You’re upset because a while ago, the Mets said Duda, F-Mart, etc. were AAA bound and they’re sticking to their plan? I would think you’d have more of a leg to stand on if Duda has to come north and then you can say, “HA! I told you all it was too early to make assessments!” All this seems like is the Mets are sticking to their developmental plans instead of panicking over tendonitis in an otherwise healthy knee.

      Or maybe I’m misunderstanding you?

    • All I can say speakin for myself is that something that was said in December by Collins or Alderson was not set in stone.

Maybe you read a lot into it and the point some were trying to make was that just cause they said it does not mean it is set in stone?

In any event players like Duda, Fmart, Tejada, Mejia just may not be ready for the Big Leagues in the Mets opinion.

For me FMart really needs to show he can stay healthy and Duda’s brief appearance while he looked better toward the end doesn’t necessarily mean that he is ready in the Mets eyes Tejada looked overmatched last year in the bigs so I cant fault the Mets if they would like him to play some more in AAA 1st and finally Mejia is far from showing he is ready to be a starter in the bigs.

All in all letting these kids develop a bit more may turn out to be better for us in the long run.

    • You may want to try prunes…………..

    • I think you are maybe missing the point that being sent down to the Minors is a sign that they want to KEEP them and develop them as opposed to a guy like Perez who if he doesn’t make the team is done as a met.

If the guys have any value and there is no room to play them everyday then it is better they get that everyday work in the minors so they don’t sit on the bench and rot from lack of use.

  • So offense is now not important in RF with Harris/Hairston, but they want offense at 2B? This is only the beginning. Helloooo New Philosophy!

    • You do see the difference?

The 2b decision is to decide who will be the starter.

The OF situation is to fill what right now is perceived to be a temporary hole till Beltran returns.

If you just try to be open minded you would see that.

    • Not burn options on potential future contributors in order to fill a spot for 2 weeks?

Besides, what makes you think Duda (who is not a right fielder) or Martinez (who hasn’t proved he should be on the big club) will be adequate?

    • Maybe it’s a hint they really don’t want Tejada anywhere but on a bus back to Buffalo!!! LOL.

    • Right because on March 8th it’s time to push the panic button and go out and sign the best offensive RFer in the game, because YOU say so………..Good Bye Old Philosphy……….

    • Oh poor Bayonne, the only little metsie who doesn’t beleive every line…. you must be a bad metsie…. you want to win or something??????willie ha get with the program…willie harris for mvp.. after all sandy stole him so he must be awesome.. forget the average.

      • Please stop picking on Bayonne.

I defend his right to be wrong on most everything. He’s entitled to his bizarre comments.

        Thank you.

    • You are just a complete moron. Where did anyone say that? Beltran is being shut down 5 days in ST and that equates to offense is not important in RF?

“Hello New Philosophy”………do you stay awake making up this crap?

  • wouldn’t duda/fmart lose one of their demotion options if they start in the mlb and get demoted ?

doesn’t it make sense to save those options up so that they don’t have to be released if they have an extended slump once they come up for good ?

i don’t know much about how options work, but i always hear, so and so is out of options and needs to be released. if that’s the case, this is just a prudent long term decision.

    • Francis, you’re absolutely right on all counts. It’s just that some people would prefer to bash Alderson for every breath he takes than actually thinking for themselves or, dare I say, knowing what they’re talking about.

    • Evans is in that boat. If he doesn’t make the opening day roster, he won’t get outright released, but rather put on waivers.

Now, if every other team in the league passes on Evans, then he can go to Buffalo. Good luck with that.

      • If they try and pass Evans through waivers, I’ll be very surprised if he goes unclaimed. I can see Philly, for one, picking him up.

        • I wonder if they could trade him before that. Is there a good AL team looking for a right handed DH/utility guy? Some team that probably wouldn’t get him off waivers?

    • Francis you do not understand the option. if they get sent sown before the season starts or during the season they astill use 1 option. They only don’t use an option if they spend the entire year in the bigs. So if they start in the bigs its the same amount of options as if they get sent down right away. Itried toexplain it so even the parrot would be able to understand.

      • That makes no sense. Who doesn’t understand the option?

      • i don’t understand the option, i’m trying to understand it.

are you saying that if they don’t make the 25 man roster, it still counts as using an option ? that makes no sense to me at all.

        • Options and free agents are discussed at this Wiki website:

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_League_Baseball_transactions

          Details of “Options” are:

If a player is on the 40-man roster but not on the active major league roster, he is said to be on optional assignment—his organization may freely move him between the major league club and the minor league club. If a player is on the 40-man roster and not the active 25 man roster for any part of more than three seasons (in which he spent 20 or more total days of service in the minors), he is out of options and may not be assigned to the minors without first clearing waivers. However, if a player has less than 5 years of professional experience, he may be optioned to the minors in a fourth season without being subject to waivers. If a major league player is ineligible for free agency and “has options” remaining, his team may option him to a minor league team without consequence. This is usually what is meant when players are “sent down” to the minors. Likewise, when a player on the 40-man roster is added to the active major league roster, he is “called up” to the majors.

          .

          • thanks des.

duda will probably be up at some point given how fragile our outfield seems to be, but I don’t see the need to have him up in April. Perhaps if Beltran is out for 8-10 weeks, but not otherwise.

f-mart has already been up at least 2 years, maybe 3, so keeping him in the minors makes more sense to me.

            • So trying to win with the best talent is irrelevant? The fan base has been so beaten back they don’t even discuss who is going to ehlp the team win anymore. Casey would call it Amazin NOT!!!!!

  • If one of the young guys plays well enough and Beltran is on DL they deserve to start.

  • In my humble opinion what Alderson is really saying is that we Mets fans will have to go through another year of a core Mets player being injured and not being replaced. It’s happened with Delgado, Reyes, Beltran, Bay, Church (though he was not a core player) and let’s not forget the pitchers like Maine, Wagner, Martinez, now Santana among others. It has been the Mets policy for the past few years to sit back and wait for someone to get healthy and it has cost us fans dearly. Reyes will be back by May or Beltran will be back by mid June and on and on until the season has passed us.
Now, wiith the financial difficulties facing the team there is even less reason for hope if a major player like Beltran has to be shut down for a while.
Right not it sucks following this team.

  • Call me crazy but we need to showcase all ballplayers with potential in case an opportunity arises before the trade deadline in case The Big Kuhuna becomes availble in one Albert Pujols. We need an Alex Rodriquez challenger in the Big Apple and Pujols is the only one that can do that. The big if is if the Wilpons can get an investor by then.

    • no way the Mets go for Pujols with the dark clouds of financial uncertainty looming over their heads.

      • pujols has a better shot of buying the mets than playing for them.

        • Touché — smart and funny comment.

          • stop, i’m blushing.

            • In today’s world, especially NYC, blushing is a thing of the past — as is shame.

  • I don’t see the Mets letting either Reyes or Wright go. The fans would mutiny. They are part of the recent Mets experience, an intangible (or ‘good will’) that has additional market value. Their signings might cause some cash flow problems, but the Mets’ backers will come through.

Regarding his handling of Jose, Sandy was in a difficult position and I think his words were used to negotiate for space and time. Back when Sandy arrived, if he immediately committed to getting rid of Reyes or committed to resigning him, he was locked in. So I think Sandy made a smart maneuver. It will result in some complications but will be best in the long run. After Omar’s ruinous last year or so, Sandy recognized that he will have to sell his decision to the team’s ownership. He didn’t want to be wrong.

    • reyes is as good as gone.

if the wilpons sell 25% AND settle with Picard, or sell control, there’s an outside shot that he’ll stay.

wright’s contract lasts longer than the wilpons will, so he’ll probably stay.

      • I’m happy to predict both will stay. Purchasers want the team to maintain value, as does MLB. Everyone eventually benefits then.

        • Bingo. they need players fans want to see everyday. Even if the Wilpons keep the team, they need to make it valuable so they can take out loans against it.

sheesh, even Loria is keeping one or two franchise players in Ramirez and Johnson.

  • just reading the quotes in the post, I think some people may have read too much into them (or misinterpreted them).

Put them together, and he is saying that Beltran will NOT be on the DL to start the season, and that they will use the designated bench guys (harris/hairston) will fill in as beltran gets spotted rest early on.

I’m assuming that is so that the prospects can be getting the reps they need playing FT, in AAA, instead of burning another season on the bench in the majors.

A different question is what will he do if Beltran is on the DL, and could be there for a while. Then going with a better prospect instead of the limp noodle from the bench should happen.

    • Oh Any Any Any, don’t be logical, of people took the time to actual read what is written then how could they moan and groan over nothting? Any chance for some people to perpetuate their hate.
