Steve Phillips Weighs In On Wilpon/Madoff Mess
Check out the following AOL Fanhouse video clip featuring former Mets GM Steve Phillips who defends the Wilpons from most of the fire they are getting from the rest of the media.
Phillips makes some great points, and knows the Wilpons better than 99% of the people who are casting aspersions and making false allegations against them.
For some reason, too many in the media are rushing to judgment against the Wilpons, even before any of the facts have been released.
This is starting to look more and more like a witch hunt, and less and less like investigative reporting. Hopefully the truth will come out long before the media finishes playing the roles of judge, jury and executioner.
Hat tip to Matt Cerrone of MetsBlog for this clip.

What an article. Steve Phillips is suddenly gospel. Making statement of facts that there is a witch hunt. Taking at face the value the word of the Wilpon lawyers. Just tell us why the innocent Wilpon are fighting the releasing of the lawsuit to the public, while the trustee has no objections to this. Innocent people fight the truth being known? Tell us why people so rich and having a battery of financial and legal people working for them could be involved totally innocently in two of these things? Why did the same scenario play out in each one, with the Wilpons suddenly and miraculously knowing when to get out not once but twice . Maybe the people you so flippantly call witchhunt people have found out facts you can’t comprehend because its just so much easier to listen to the wisdom of a sex pervert.
Harry, you’re throwing in a red herring with your closing sentence. Did you feel you didn’t make your case so you have to do an ad hominem attack? I expect more from you.
Des I HAVE BEEN HAVING FUN WATCHING THE WILPON MOB GET THEIR DUE. WATCHING FREDDYE DROWN ON HIS OWN FLUIDS IS GREAT FUN FOR THE BABY.AS PICARD KEEPS DIGGING MORE OF THE WILPON FOLLY WILL COME TO LIGHT.BY THE WAY I LOVE FREDDYES NEW RED HAIR. WHATS THE MATTER HE DOESN’T HAVE THE FUNDS TO GET IT PROFESSIONALY RETOUCHED ANYMORE!
The RETURN OF BABY AL….i was starting to wonder.
Glad you’re happy, glad your ecstatic about everything has happened…..at the expense of a possible demise of the Met organization.
But what does that matter as long as Freddye is goes down right?
all mobsters should go down.check out the track marks on freddyes face. he looks like a man afraid ole uncle bernie madoff might talk.a tough way to live if ya ask me.last time i was in these parts u went to a yankee playoff game.u started following them and took the met jinx with ya…nice woik!
I”m with Steve here in that, base on everything that I’ve heard, that Fred Wilpon wasn’t involved or had any previously knowledge of this scheme, either.
I do disagree that it may be best for the Mets brand to have new ownership.
But Steve’s the man. Today I saw Leiter, Piazza, & Zeile on MLB Network with Zeile looking like he’s being added to the staff. Wise choice.
Those were fun Mets teams to root for with a lot of stand up straight shooters on that team. I wish we won the WS in 2000 with those guys.
Steve is still the man in my book and always will be.
the bottom line is the courts will decide the guilt of the wilpon mob.the picard digging will continue and there is no doubt in my mind the end result will be the greedy wilpons will be out of the baseball business.the mets will be the better for it.as far as lil stevie phillips goes his taste in women, like his morality,is quite flawed. his old girlfriend looks like jeffye wilpon in a wig!
Hey baby al. I saw you post something the other day but you were gone soon after. How’s the winter in the Big Apple? We’ll all be ready to go by Spring Training.
I hope you have the wisdom to entertain Bayonne again. He’ll be watching you, my baby man. Is he still pushing the carts on Kennedy Avenue between his penetrating posts here on MMO. Anyway, all kidding aside, it’s good to have you back.
A sex pervert? As opposed to other kinds?
A lot of this “journalism” reminds me of all the media types who had Sean Taylor’s murder pegged as a gang killing. They just need a villain.
Damn journalists!!!
They witchhunted an outstanding community leader Madoff who helped the city with millons $$$$$ to jail.
Now they are trying to ruin his best friend Wilpon who brought so many investers to him.
Wolves, Jackals….
He appears to be under house arrest.
Why is it no matter what steve phillips says all here is “roger cedano is athletic enough to play centerfield”
I have to agree with Steve that these legal allegations against the Wilpons is either a Witch hunt or a group or people are upset with Wilpons about some deal or want to shake them. It could be Bernie just took advantage or the Wilpons Trust and friendship for his profits. MET FANS we need to show your support for them and the METS. Don’t get upset if they don’t spend big dollars for a few years. The METS could very likely become a stronger closer team and gel as a team.
Get real ,Idiot!!! or crook.
Madoff financed Wilpons.
Just my two cents but we should not be judging others based on articles and speculation plus grand standing by the Madoff trustee to have others, who lost money and were hurt come down on Wilpons also.
As we go out in the blogsphere let us remember to look in the mirror before we judge another human being. We are not innocent in our lives and judging the Wilpons for past trades, signings, etc is ok but if you don’t have the facts then don’t talk like you do.
Bible says “judge not lest you be judged..”
We just need to let this play out between the involved parties, get the scoop when all is settled and get ready for pitchers and catchers to report.
Oh, I hope that Phillips assertion that because of this Mets will cut payroll and that is why SA was brought in?
I believe that Jose Reyes is a valuable part of this team going forward, a product of their farm system, and with some young blood coming up from minors and a signing here and there they can compete and then go for it all next year, if not this year.
I don’t want a team on the cheap, no San Diego or Pittsburgh or Marlins, please!
For all those who are saying that Fred Wilpon and Bernie Madoff are not involved in the Mets business just check out Page One of today’s New York Time – right in the center is a picture of “Fred Wilpon, the principal owner of the Mets, with Bernard L. Madoff at Shea Stadium in 1995″
Here’s a link to the article: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/02/sports/baseball/02mets.html?hp
Ya, Madoff was a seaon ticket holder. That isn’t a secret. Have you seen the jacket?
Hey Annie, all agree and have stated that Madoff and Wilpon were childhood friends so the picture is nothing but the fact that Wilpon trusted Madoff, though as we have been told many times, “if it seems to good to be true then it is not worth it”, so their friendship is not proof of any criminal activity sheesh lets stick to facts not innuendo.
