I'm not sure how it's decided either, AlwaysNext, but we all know how they paid Bonilla. They also owed Kris Benson money, still do, although I have no idea why since they traded him (unless they assumed some of his salary on a deferred basis...still thought they didn't owe him)...Point is, viewed in a vacuum, doing those deferred payments benefits everyone - the player is guaranteed money later, and the ownership can invest. Of course, given they have invested a load of that $$ with the Madoff funds according to reports, if they invested it wisely and with anyone else, it may have been a good deal...

This makes no sense. Is there any possible way that they could make more money by keeping Ollie vs. letting him go? If anything, cutting him now might sell more tickets.

And I think the fact that they are paying Omar to sit at home indicates that they recognized, and ate, mistakes already.

thanks. In that case, the cash flow crunch is not even relevant (you could see them not being able to pay the entire 12 up front, so being forced to keep him in that case).

I liked that idea, but I'm not sure Ollie would have taken the bait and willingly took a trip to the minors...the funny thing is, Manuel alluded to a start against Halladay late in the season (august maybe?) shortly after that dude quit jetBlue and flew down the air slide? One of the best lines I saw on that was, I admire Manuel for it - this is what you give me? I give you Perez vs Halladay. Enjoy the game! It's almost like taking two beers and jumping down the plane chute

honest question here, since I don't know how it works.

When they cut a player and owe their salary, do they have to pay them in a lump sum (though that should be reduced to account for time value) right away, or do they continue to make the normal payments through the year?

if they can keep paying him along the way, then there is absolutly no impact to the budget or cash flow (assuming he gets picked up for the minimum, and replaced by another minimum wage guy).

Honestly, the Mets need to man up and cut him.
I know the ideals of Alderson is probably to look to squeeze every bit of value of Perez (and his contract) that they can, but come on, just man up and cut the guy.

He is a waste of a roster spot and his comments yesterday were borderline pathetic. The sun? Come on, Perez.

I think it's a little early to be getting on Alderson about Perez. I would want to at least see what he had a few times out before flushing that $12mil. Even the Mighty Buccos released Matt Morris a couple years back and had to pay him almost half of their payroll for the year (OK that's a slight exaggeration).
Although, the sad thing is, deep down inside, I truly beleive this loaf is going to be on the opening day roster.

Here's the problem as I see it: okay, Alderson has stated that Perez' $12 million commitment will not prevent him being released if they need to. HOWEVER, given that the Mets had to borrow $25 million from MLB can they afford to cut Perez and his contract? What if they decide to cut both Perez AND Castillo? Can they afford to dump $18 million in the wake of their loan from MLB? Someone should ask Alderson AGAIN about this and see what he says. They had to have the money from MLB to make ends meet, so can they handle paying two players that much money who are not on the roster, or even just Perez? Just sayin'.

I view this Ollie situation as a test of the veracity of Alderson. Sandy is good at talkin' the talk, but let's see how he does at walkin' the walk. If he is in control and his own man as he claims, then Ollie is gone. Will that actually happen? I say no. Sandy will bow to FW and carry him on the roster. Collins won't play him except in games that are already completely shot to take on inning or two off some other arm that can actually pitch. We're stuck with his load clogging up a roster spot. We will be going into the season with an effective roster of 24. This will reveal the lie of Sandy Alderson.
