They also owed Kris Benson money, still do, although I have no idea why since they traded him (unless they assumed some of his salary on a deferred basis…still thought they didn’t owe him)…Point is, viewed in a vacuum, doing those deferred payments benefits everyone – the player is guaranteed money later, and the ownership can invest. Of course, given they have invested a load of that $$ with the Madoff funds according to reports, if they invested it wisely and with anyone else, it may have been a good deal…

When they cut a player and owe their salary, do they have to pay them in a lump sum (though that should be reduced to account for time value) right away, or do they continue to make the normal payments through the year?

if they can keep paying him along the way, then there is absolutly no impact to the budget or cash flow (assuming he gets picked up for the minimum, and replaced by another minimum wage guy).

Although, the sad thing is, deep down inside, I truly beleive this loaf is going to be on the opening day roster.

Can they afford to dump $18 million in the wake of their loan from MLB? Someone should ask Alderson AGAIN about this and see what he says. They had to have the money from MLB to make ends meet, so can they handle paying two players that much money who are not on the roster, or even just Perez? Just sayin’.
