This morning, Mets COO Jeff Wilpon spoke to reporters at the Mets Spring Training complex in Port St. Lucie and addressed the Madoff related lawsuit and how it effects the Mets.
MetsBlog posts the following recap:
He says the Mets/Madoff situation has been a distraction, and he feels bad for his family who has taken a lot of criticism.

An article by Hojo's Mojo

Someone at my blog said it looks as if Jeff Wilpon has a new Toupee.
Bring on “The Donald.”
we’re screwed!
Jeff Wilpon Faces The Music? Where is the music? I think Jeff handled the situation pretty well.
I thought he did too. Much less like a robot than usual. He almost seemed happy which I have never seen out of him, even after we clinched in 2006.
First day of ST always brings out the best.
t agee:
Tomorrow is the next first day of ST, i.e., the first day after the inaugural day. He’s young and just might grow into the job. Whether the Wilpons should sell or remain, is to me a question of what’s best for the team, the New York market, and, yes, the Wilpons. Unlike a few fans on MMO, I have no animosity towards the ownership.
I really enjoy reading baby al’s comments which are different than mine, but they’re pure entertainment for me and a reflection of the diversity of our MMO family’s views. The Mets success on the baseball field is my ultimate yardstick.
Des, The Mets success on the field is all I care about too, baseball wise anyway. I don’t mind if J.Wilpon runs the business end but when an Organization consistently spends the most money and realizes results that place them in the lowest quadrant over a period of 20 years with only one constant, the Owner. That is a clear indication that their is a huge problem WITH the ownership.
J.Wilpon should be quarantened from the baseball end because of his families detrimental effect on the on field product for over twenty years.
agee, this is the first time though in the wilpon era that there is actually a GM with the presence, experience, gravitas (however you want to look at it), to push through a real plan to remodel the organization, and really stand up to any meddling that is counter productive.
hopefully the days of a puppet GM regime (if it really existed) are over.
ANY, I think your right. I think Omar could have gotten through to the Wilpon’s but instead tried to work around their structure.
They’ll listen to Alderson now first and foremost because they have to. They have no other choice but Alderson has also insulated himself with two assistants that should help keep J.Wilpon at bay if he starts getting ants in the pants.
Omar had Bernazard who had a different adgenda which included sucking up to J.Wilpon rather than building the best baseball team possible for the long haul.
I keep wondering when the post that says ” The end of the Wilpons is near…Jeff Wilpon stepped on a crack in the sidewalk! Their luck is changing for the worse” is posted by someone!
IF Jose Reyes is a fit? Is he kidding? Or is he setting things up for NOT resigning him because he didn’t fit? I think that Mr Wilpon ISN’T a fit. New Ownership like Mr Trump would be so nice. Someone NOT afraid to spend & who makes good investments.
What makes you think what you think are good investments Trump will too?
Becareful what you wish for or
YOU’RE FIRED
Thanks the baseball gods for the new way of doing business. I hope it works, but it can’t be any worse than the old way of doing business.
Reading between the lines – it doesn’t look like the Mets can afford Reyes. Regardless of what Sandy says (that the Mets can move either up or down) bank on it that the Mets are only looking on moving down on their payroll.
Reyes has always been the catalyst when the Mets win. However, if he proves healthy his price is going to go up.
I will be interested to see how the fans react if Reyes gets off to a fast start and stands to be a free agent.
This scandle has made the Mets a small market team in the number one market in the world. I think regardless of how innocent Fred might be – you can’t run a New York team like this and he should sell.
I guess no one read the article I did on Mets. com that said the Mets WOULD be up to resigning Reyes after the season starts……….
How awful of them to want to make sure a huge investment is going to be healthy…..I mean why not just pull the trigger now, it worked with Ollie Perez……..oh wait.
your backwards here. They did make Ollie play out his FA year before signing him. so how did that work out?
Tis time last year the Mets cut 10 million from their payroll. They said at the time that this money would give them flexability to get what they needed by the all star break. Guess what? They never spent a dime on it while watching the team struggle. I guess you can’t always believe what they say, Hooch.
