Four Prospects Who Could Impact Mets In 2011

Anthony DiComo of Mets.com, believes that Jenrry Mejia, Lucas Duda, Fernando Martinez and Kirk Nieuwenhuis are all prospects to watch this season and writes the following:

RHP Jenrry Mejia: After speeding to the Majors last year at the age of 20, Mejia will most likely take a step back and open this season at Triple-A Buffalo. If he satisfies the Mets with his performance there, Mejia could rejoin the rotation at some point this summer.

OF Lucas Duda: After his cup of coffee last season, Duda will be back this spring for another shot at the Majors. Most likely, though, he’ll start the season in Buffalo, where he can play every day and continue to develop.

OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis: Perhaps the club’s center fielder of the future, Nieuwenhuis’ development could play a prominent role in the Mets’ decision whether to trade Beltran this summer. After making it all the way to Triple-A last season, he’s nearly ready for the big leagues.

OF Fernando Martinez: It’s a make-or-break season for Martinez, once one of the top few offensive prospects in baseball. Now 23 years old, Martinez must prove he can avoid injuries and hit at a high level, lest he fade back into obscurity.

  • F Mart is only 22, and does not turn 23 until after the 2011 season is over.

trading Beltran most likely will not depend on Kirk having a big year. pagan will replace him in the ST anyway. Kirk also needs to show some plate discipline before he makes the next step. Could be a big AAA season for him.

Duda I hope gets enough OF PT to get comfortable, because I think the mets need his bat.

    • Yes, but if Captain Kirk developes well, they may not feel an immediate need to trade Beltran, since they will have a capable outfielder to go with Pagan. They can then let Beltran go in the offseason and collect the 2 draft picks.

If it doesn’t look like he is ready anytime soon, they will probably look for a major league ready outfielder in exchange for Beltran.

Of course, he’ll have to show some big time capabilities for that.

      • they won’t get any picks for Beltran. Per his contract, they can’t offer him arbitration. So that makes it much more likely he gets traded by the deadline.

In his case, it should solely be based on if the mets are in the playoff race or not. If no, try to get something back for him.

  • I think Martinez will be an afterthought. He may be only 22, but with arthritis in his knee he’s not likely to ever be able to play 140 games in the OF anymore. At this point, the best case scenario for him is to go the AL and become a full time DH who can play 35-50 games in the OF if needed. If he reaches his potential he could have a Harold Baines type career which wouldn’t be too shabby. As for Captain Kirk, he needs work on handling LHP before he reaches the majors. His defense and hitting vs. RHP are probably pretty close to ML ready, but there is NO reason to rush him. Duda does indeed need more reps in the OF to become an adequate ML LF’er. But it’s interesting to me that the Mets want to use him at 1B in Buffalo as well, which is very curious considering the position is blocked by Ike Davis. Oh well. And Mejia, ideally he’d spend most of ’11 in AAA honing his secondary pitches and learning to set hitters up. If he does that he could become a legit #1 or #2 starter in the Majors in a few years.

  • What, No Tejada in that list?

Here is what DiComo mlb Mets beatwriter had to say about Tejada.

“With all the questions about second base this season, why is Ruben Tejada being considered an afterthought? The Mets represent a strong one through seven in their lineup. With Tejada’s strong defense, it would give New York a stronger infield. With our lineup, shouldn’t the Mets consider the strongest defensive presence?
    – Dave L., Brooklyn, N.Y.

It’s an interesting premise, but the club is more interested in giving the 20-year-old Tejada, who looked completely overmatched at times last season, some seasoning in the Minors. Defense counts for plenty, but can’t be considered alone. Tejada needs to develop his offensive game before the Mets will consider him a legitimate candidate for the second-base job.”

Obviously the only thing holding Tejada back is him showing he can hold his own at the plate. Something easier said than done.

    • The FO also has to look at the big picture, which includes later in this season, along with next year. And that includes guys in the minors.

right now, they need to see if havens can stay on the field, since it seems pretty clear that he is the guy they are hoping takes over 2B soon. Combine that with uncertainty about the future of Reyes, and you have tejada playing SS in the minors.

nothing is set in stone when dealing with guys that aren’t locked in to a spot (like Wright). Plenty can change in a couple of months (like with Ike last year). Starting in the minors doesn’t mean you are staying there all year.

      • Maybe the front office should just SHUT THEIR MOUTHS and let the spring training competition play out.

        • Unless they are talking about making Tejada the Opneing Day secondbaseman, I bet.

          • Of course..then they’re saying the right thing. Seriously I would love that yes, but i also have pride in my baseball knowledge, as anyone should and I know, in real life, the competition still has to play out.

      • Agreed ANY. Heck if anything this is just added incentive for Tejada to show he belongs.

        • You could say that for ANY player. Don’t you think every prospect wants to show he belongs? Ruben, nor any player, needs an added incentive.

  • Tejada is going to the minors for two main reasons…
One to get him everyday work in case Reyes is traded and two to inspire him to work on his hitting so he could be brought up again.

Kirk is going to stay down until Beltran gets traded and I think Beltran is a goner no matter what he does. Only thing that saves him is if we actually lead the division by a decent margin at the trade deadline because a move like that could ruin it.

But that is a longshot to happen. Whenever Beltran goes Kirk will come up and take over.

  • I wonder what would happen if in July there was this firesale, and the Mets got a ton of high level prospects from several contenders.
Probably the same hateful reaction if they do nothing.
Damned if they do, damned if they don’t.
    I’ll take the former.
