Maine’s never had great control and now his fastball is 86mph. Unless he’s found another 8mph on his fastball he’s not going to be very good.

The S.S. John Maine left port almost two seasons ago. It ain’t a comin’ back.

I trust we’ve seen enough of that whiny, frustrated puss.

He did have it goin’ on for a bit. Hey, so did guys like Kerry Wood and Mark Prior.

Take a chance on Maine again. Wha’, one Kris Benson wasn’t enough for Mets fans!

Mark me words: Maine will never contribute well to another MLB team again.

I would have no issues inviting Maine to ST and letting him pitch his way back into the rotation if he can.

He at least accepted his Minor League assignment like a pro.
Put it this way it sure can’t hurt us to let him try. I doubt he will succeed but as long as it doesn’t cost us a roster spot if he fails I am willing to give him the chance.

T, regarding Maine & Warthen & Jerry, I got the destinct impression John was much like Ryan Church claiming health when injured & possibly viceversa, who knows? when a player’s integrity is in question so is his value to his mngr & coaching staff, esp if u can’t plan on relying upon him. Despite originally liking Maine, I’ve come to the conclusion, he’s not a winner on or off the field. Certainly not a tough individual, it’s hard for me to ever imagine his believing he’s better than whoever the batter is, he reminds me of a character that occasionally appeared in the old Lil’ Abner cartoon strip who could never escape the black cloud drawn above his head. If John Maine talked in his sleep, I believe he’d be caught repeating Woe is me! as a constant mantra. Perhaps we should encourage PHL to ink him as a Lee offset.

Why are Met fans so afraid to lose there garbage. I would pay the Phillies to take him. The only Met in last 5 years with less guts then Maine was Aaron Heilman, how’s he doing

Come on Brandon. What does a sore throat have to do with not being able to bang away on the keyboard. You gotta suck it up man, rub some snow on it. Get over to see Rey Ramirez and get your ass back in the lineup.

I never understood why Dan Warthen got so mad at Maine, sure it was frustrating but he was hurt. It’s not like he didn’t want to pitch. Everyone else was hurt too, that’s what made it so bad when Maine went down too but I would love to have him in AAA, re-acquiring his stuff, working out the kinks, ready to step up if given the chance and hopefully feeling good.

Speaking of which, glad to hear you are feeling better Brandon.

I think the best thing for Maine’s career would be if the Mets just left him alone and let him move on. John, probably has a bad taste in his mouth from the last few years and i think he would do better with a change of scenery. Sometimes like in life, it is best to cut ties and move on.

it’s just a MiL signing. Young is already on board, so there would be no downside to bringing in maine. If he is really finally recovered, he could be of value. Maybe even in AAA as emergency depth. and if not, he gets lopped off.

if anything, it should have been taken as a compliment.

kind of like Johan and his “I’m a man”.

pitchers are supposed to be tough guys that want the ball, no matter what, until their arm falls off (which was pretty close to what happened with maine!)

You’re taking the “he’ a liar” comment completely out of context – TOTALLY.

When Warthen was interviewed he said it in a back-handed, fatherly type of way when he was discussing Maine. The way you make it sound is that Warthen yelled out “HE’s A LIAR”. Nothing could be further from the truth. Oh, and turns out Warthen was right.

As for Maine. Yes, I would give him another shot – it’ all about finding out who gives you the best chance to win and if he came back, healthy, and did a good job – and for league minimum (assuming that’s what Mets will pay) – Yes I would do it.

Unless he were to come back strictly as a reliever, the answer is no.

Problem is, we’ve waited for the “old” Maine to come back for what, 2-3 years now? He’s whether quit (say what you want, but there were starts I can tell he wasn’t trying), got hurt for the umpteenth time, or threw too many pitches in an inning & wound up tiring himself out by the 4th or 5th inning. If he doesn’t wanna come back as a relief pitcher, pass.

Considering the Mets still have Ollie and are taking chances on Young and Capuano…taking a shot with Maine, who has been just awful the past 3 seasons, doesn’t make a lot of sense.

there are plenty of other injured guys trying to hustle a MiL invite. Only reason he is notable is being a former met. Who knows, maybe the mets do invite him too.

and there is always going to be a difference between guys that game back and showed they could still perform the prior year, and ones that finished the year as damaged goods.
