Mets Will Host The 2013 All-Star Game: Just What the Doctor Ordered

Nearly forty seven years ago Johnny Callison hit a walk off home run in the 1964 All-Star Game at Shea Stadium, that being the first and only time the Mets in their 49-year history would host an All-Star Game. Now in 2011, Sports Illustrated and sources close to Jon Heyman are reporting that the New York Mets will host the All-Star Game. The report is unconfirmed by MLB but many sources close to the situation [...]

Sifting Through All The Noise

Yesterday’s news that the Wilpons were exploring their options and looking to sell a minority stake in the team was both surprising and yet unsurprising as well. Surprising, because it came after many statements from the Wilpons who adamantly said time and time again, that the Madoff scandal had very little to no bearing on the Mets operation, and that the scandal was something that only affected other parts of their businesses. Unsurprising, because the NY [...]

Should the Mets Give John Maine Another Chance?

Before i go on with the post, i want to apologize for not posting a lot this week.  I am currently recovering from a severe case of strep throat, so it hasn’t been a good week for me.  John Maine was one of the Mets top starters heading into 2010, behind Johan, and Mike Pelfrey.  But, during the middle of the season, John Maine started having issues.  Not just with injuries, but with Jerry Manuel.  [...]

The Whole Truth, Please

I think the Wilpons’ need to remember that old saying “Just tell the truth, they’ll find out anyway”. The more I read/hear about this whole mess is that the Wilpons are just a couple of steps behind the truth every time they make a statement. Of course it’s embarassing, but it’s too late for Fred and family to think about that. I’m sure that the Wilpons haven’t even thought about the team or the ballpark [...]

NY Times: Wilpons Could Owe One Billion Dollars

Updated Post 6:30 PM The New York Times, citing a source, reported Irving Picard, the trustee charged with recovering funds for Madoff victims, could be seeking as much as $1 billion from the Wilpon family in the sealed lawsuit, by taking into account “their conduct” in addition to “actual Ponzi scheme gains”. “I think Fred Wilpon has a very serious problem,” the newspaper quoted the source. “If that’s true, he might have to sell the [...]

Listen: Mets Conference Call, Wilpons Could Sell 25% Of Team

Here is the conference call courtesy of SNY. In a nutshell, Fred Wilpon has indicated that the Mets are looking to sell about 20-25% of the team. Considering that the team is worth a staggering number that could come close to one billion dollars, we are talking about a potential investor who can come in with about $200 – $250 million dollars to buy themselves a minority stake in the New York Mets. That’s a lot of [...]

How Many Is Too Many?

The Mets haven’t developed a second baseman since Edgardo Alfonzo. In the eight seasons since his last appearance with the team, fans have watched Luis Castillo, Jose Valentin, Anderson Hernandez, Kaz Matsui and Roberto Alomar’s doppelganger try and man the position with very little success, but finally there’s some hope for the future of that position. Sandy Alderson has lined up several young players with something to prove to compete for the position, and while that’s [...]

About That $50 Million Dollars

The conventional thinking is this is a throwaway season with the Mets not being able to compete until 2012 after the team clears its books of Oliver Perez, Carlos Beltran, Luis Castillo and possibly Francisco Rodriguez. However, that’s not a given. While the Mets should have more financial flexibility next winter, they’ll have a wide range of holes to fill including an outfielder to replace Beltran, at least two starting pitchers and possibly a closer [...]

Does Spending Big Equal Winning Big?

Yesterday, I came across a post I wrote almost a year ago that struck me as being somewhat foreboding and maybe even a little bit prophetic. It was intended to be some advice and a word of warning to Omar Minaya, and in it I described a type of philosophy that sounds very familiar today. The title kind of gives it away “Do Star Studded Acquisitions Lead To Winning Seasons?“, but I wanted to share some [...]

Josh Thole Hopes To Give Mets Stability Behind The Plate

Josh Thole goes into spring training as the odds-on favorite to get the bulk of the playing time at catcher. Even if manager Terry Collins goes to a lefty-righty platoon with Thole and the newly acquired Ronny Paulino, it would be the left-handed hitting Thole getting the lion’s share of at-bats. If Thole can handle the Mets’ pitching staff and can successfully hit major league pitching on a regular basis, he stands to do something [...]
