I hope they ALL do. I hope Evans, Duda, Tejada, Mejia ALL come in as men on a mission. If they prove they belong than Sandy’s gonna have to eat contracts already.

I think that if Evans comes into camp with a mindset to force Collins and Sandy to keep him cause of his performance, he can play LF and 1B, that would help Mets financially not having to pay Hairston or Harris who scares me with that Mendoza type on base pct.

I think Evan can be one of those surprise players this spring and I hope Collins gives him every chance especially when they play major league pitching.

Hey, if alderson signs a piece of junk like Hairston its good move. When Omar did these moves they were bad. In three years, when Alderson does these moves, they’ll be bad. In five years when the next gm makes these moves they’ll be good. Most people here cannot look at a move for what it is, only by who made it.

I know Stoner pitched awful last year but in a recent interview he says he was pitching in pain all year but is healthy again. I wouldn’t be so fast to jettison him if he clears waivers. Pridie has a new nickname, “Hammie” cause of his constantly pulled hamstrings. Besides the outfield is very crowded at AAA with KMart, Duda, Captain Kirk, Ratliff, Maldonado and possibly Evans and Wabick, I don’t see where Hammie would even play.

Still less than Alex Cora. Also, he’s a little more proven than some of the other signings this season.

And Young has a ton of incentives in his contract. If he hits them all, he’ll make more that $4 million. Hairstaon isn’t going to do that.

Fair enough. I disagree. Maybe for a guy like Evans that doesn’t project to much, but a guy with Duda’s potential I feel should start everyday.

it was an estimate (calculation?) from 1 of the writers (I forget which one) that based it on what he thought was the carry over payroll subtracted from some bandied about number of total payroll (I thought 140mill, or whatever they decided it was last year).

I don’t think the team ever gave any real number, just indicated they did not have a ton to spend.

If I remember correctly, no one associated with the Mets claimed they had only $5 million to spend. Maybe I’m wrong, but everywhere I saw it, it was a writer who said it, not someone with the organization. You have some links of this claim coming from Sandy or a Wilpon?

It was only for $1.1 million, and the fact that he plays all three outfield positions was enticing, I’m guessing. If Evans does well, he’ll be the guy. I don’t think the Mets would interfere with Duda’s progress by sitting him on the bench in Queens the way you think they might, no matter how he hits in Spring Training. If it was your call and Duda tore the cover off the ball in March and Pagan struggled, who’d be your right fielder?

But if you claim you only have 5 million to spend than losing a million is huge. It could work out sure, i’m just saying I would not have done it.

it is a calculated risk. The FO obviously felt he will bring more to the table than what they had on hand (in this case, evans), and were willing to make the investment.

remember, you were asking them to spend a little more to get better talent, and sometimes that means a ML deal. most likely some other team was willing to do it, and it was put up or shut up.

still, it is relatively small money, and if he absolutely looks like crap in ST, he probably gets lopped off anyway.

I reallllllllllly don’t know about this move. I don’t think it’s a good idea at all. There had to be a better way than this.

it may work out sure, but what if Duda..or even Evans do a better job. It’s all about going north with the best 25. Period.

This is a huge gamble relatively speaking. If he refused a minor league contract than I would have said “it was nice doing business but good luck”

and this is the downside to trying for a higher level of back up player. They cost more, and don’t come in on MiL invite contracts. So you might get stuck paying him anyway, even if he stinks and gets cut.

Bayonne, it’s a guaranteed major league contract. He can compete for a starting job, but he’s a Met. Unless they just release him, but they’d be on the hook for his salary. If you’re asking if he can be sent to the minors, then no, not without his permission, a la Ollie last season.

So if they gave Hairston a major league deal…before spring training starts….does he have to make the team or does he have to compete for the job in spring training first? How does it work?
