Mets Sign Reliever Blaine Boyer To Minor League Deal (With Bonus Piazza Call)

Adam Rubin of ESPN New York is reporting that the Mets have signed RHP Blaine Boyer to a minor league contract, and invited him to Spring Training.

Boyer, 29, went 3-2 with a 4.26 ERA in 54 relief appearances for the Arizona Diamondbacks last season.

He was very effective against right handed hitters last season who batted .198 off him in 111 at bats.

He also has played for the Atlanta Braves and St. Louis Cardinals and apparently enjoys knocking down umpires who don’t give him the outside corner. :-)

All I really know about Blaine Boyer is this…

  • I’d say the concerns by a select few of the Mets not being able to field a team of 25 players can be put to rest.

    How good they will be?

    Now that is another question.

  • Ken Rosenthal just reported Blue Jays’ Vernon Wells heading to Angels in Napoli trade. Wow

    • Looks like the Angels got that bat they were looking for.

      • To think if they only were able to sign Crawford this might of never had happened.

        • I just took a look at Wells and Crawford this is kinda interesting. Wells is getting payed a touch more but wheather it’s 21 mil or 19 mil is that really an issue. Also looking at their numbers Wells looks like the better deal. I know they aren’t comparable players but going by saber type comparison I’d say Wells has a better chance of outperforming Carls OPS every year. I know Crawfords SB make up for his lack of Hr to a point but My money is on Wells being the better deal.

          • you might be the only person (other than the Angels FO) to actually come to that conclusion, but you make a reasonable case. But, it largely depends on whether Wells can replicate his 2010 output for 4 more years, at his advanced age (for a CF especially). I vote no on that.

the other surprising thing is that they did not even get some salary relief. If Toronto kicked in $20mill or so to offset salary, it would have been more palatable.

They should have just forked over a couple of their excess prospects for Beltran, and saved a ton of money (and no commitment past 2011 for an old guy).

          • Nathan, they also lost napoli and rivera in addition to spending the 86MM.

On the flip side, crawford is making the big bucks to 2017, which is probably past his prime.

            • Yeah I know they lost some pop. I have just been hearing how bad the Wells contract is and how smart Boston was and I kinda got ticked at the bias so I looked it up. Yeash Vernon is a little older but by no means is he getting ancient. I get tired of always hearing how great and smart Boston and other teams are when anyone can see that the Crawford signing was kinda rediculous for a guy who’s game is based on speed.

  • You gotta luv Howie’s voice.

    • my favorite was Gary Thorne. best voice the mets ever had.

      • and also thats not Howie, north, if you are referring to that youtube clip.

  • You guys here are so totally cool! I loved listening to the clip and I totally forgot Gary Cohen came from the radio booth. I also am listening and I’m like wow Wright, Beltran, Piazza in the same lineup. It seems like ages ago.

  • Jon Heyman delivers a 1-2 punch LOL.

    Jon Heyman
congrats to #jays gm alex anthoppulos, who just unloaded 1 of the worst contracts in baseball. can the #mets hire him now?

  • anyone know why you can’t check the box anymore to have comments emailed to you?

  • This is [OFF TOPIC]

I keep reading about how there are those that have this feeling that David Wright is unclutch or how he always fails in pressure situations. I will be the 1st one to admit that Wright has failed to drive in a big run in many many key situations of this how can anyone argue against? The thing is that somehow some feel that Wright only pads his stats that a player that has averaged 25+hr’s and 100+ rbi’s over 7 years has done so by simply padding his stats and that those numbers have come in non pressure situations.

I know if I sat down at mlb.com and just watched Wright highlights all day I prob could come up with moments that would show Wright driving a go ahead run when the team is either behind or tied in the game but if you asked me to tell you from memory of such moments over the past 7 years I could not do it. I simply just can not remember but to say that is proof that Wright never has delivered a go ahead run would be ludicrous imo.

I couldnt sleep so I decided to see if I can find something in baseball reference that would show how often Wright has delivered a go ahead hit and the best I could come up with is the following.

Baseball Reference shown how many “Go-Ahead Hits” a player has in a single season. It describes it this way.

Go-Ahead Hits – (all hits where the team went from tied or behind to ahead, may have benefited from errors)

So I figured if Wright is as bad as some suggest I would think he would not lead the team in this category. Here is what Baseball Reference says.

Wright for the last 4 years which is as far as i went has led every year even his worst season of 2009 in delivering the go ahead run either when the team was tied or behind.

This is but 1 statistic mind you but the point continues if Wright is as unclutch as people say He would be somewhere in the middle of the pack here not lead every single season.

I leave this to you now to dissect and find the flaws as I know some will but I will continue to say that the idea that Wright’s career is about “padding stats” is one I simply do not share.

    • I wonder what Bayonne’s rebuttal to this one would be.

      • Chris my response to you it’s still a lot of CRAP, it doesn’t matter..those hits could be in 2nd or 3rd inning – he can drive in the tying in the bottom of the 1st and lose the game 12-1. I’m not fazed, i know what i see, I’ve been saying this for years and those who’ve watched games with me here over the years know it – the guy CANNOT PLAY UNDER PRESSURE. He CANNOT give us a hit when it matters the most.
Of course he’ll get some important hits in June (Mr. June) or vs. The Padres in a meaningless game in August or maybe even hit a game tying HR vs The Pirates in the 8th inning and we still lose. It’s all about WINNING. He’s not a winner, period.

How many more years is it gonna take u to learn, Chris. You think I’m stupid enoug to know that he can’t sometimes get a nice hit? Sure he can. Like Tom Petty once said – even the losers get lucky.
As a matter of fact how many people here can remember in the shout box just last season, a couple of times – he’d hit a game tying or go ahead HR late in game – 7th/8th inning – whatever and I said half-joking…that means we’re gonna lose…And we lost.

A whole lot of research for nothing.

The guy CANNOT perform under pressure offensively or defensively, he’s a prolific CHOKER. Talk to me WHEN IT COUNTS.
A lot of wasted time for NOTHING – Everything i said here..right off top of my head.

But there’s hope – if A-Rod can change his reputation than Wright can.

        • Typical response as usual bayonne. I didn’t expect anything different. See the thing is you think simply cause you say wright always fails in big spots then it must be so but you simply don’t know what a big spot is. See that way no matter what anyone tries to show to counter your claim you can always fall back on well that’s not a big spot cause once you specify what a big spot is someone will show you that indeed wright has succeeded in that big spot and you don’t want that.

So what’s a big spot? Just the month of Sept. or is it only the 8th or 9th inning or how bout only games for 1st place or is it all of the above?

i dont expect an answer to my questions. i mean it be nice but if you feel otherwise i understand.

        • People, people, save your energy and talk to someone that actually knows the game. This guy is the clown, no matter what Wright does he’ll find a way of slamming him. It’s Bayonne’s sport, that’s all he can do, and even that he doesn’t do well. Sad………..

        • I was going to ignore this but it was too hard to resist. Bayonne, you got some pair responding to what was Mr. North Jersey’s post after the stunts you pulled off in the shout box recently.

You don’t want him to respond to you in a public forum but then you go ahead and do just that?

And don’t pretend that you replied to Chris who was just wondering if you would have a rebuttal for Mr. North Jersey. You posted a rebuttal to Mr. North Jersey’s research and that’s plain for all to see.

It’s also plain for all to see that you are a hypocrite and a bully. You think you can come to this fine site and hijack it and make all the rules. Well guess what, you cant.

If you don’t want to be responded to by Mr. North Jersey, how dare you respond to him!

What a charlatan and a fraud you’ve become, a real pariah to the site with your endless bullying which you do so conveniently cloaked behind your keyboard.

You have no respect for the women and children who come to this site, it’s terrible to imagine the images you’ve implanted onto the minds of kids who come here to support the site and the Mets.

You have no respect for the opinions of anyone and there’s not a decent inclination in any of your mean spirited retorts. Where is your dignity?

I apologize to all the uninvolved and innocent readers that had to ready my post. It was not my intent to have you read this post which was only intended for one person. Unfortunately, not having his email, this was the only way to let him know how outraged and disgusted I’ve become by his behavior but more importantly his response to Mr. North Jersey a fellow Mets fan whom he has harassed, made fun of, made threats to, mocked his wife and children, and made personal attacks to, simply because he doesn’t like his opinions.

I’ve already written the site about this yesterday, and I also intend to send them an apology for this post, because I hated to do this but felt I had no other way to give him this message.

      • But Chris i’m not surprised by your response since it’s numbers. You believe in the Bible Of Numbers.

  • I miss Mike. It’s sad and a little weird to miss a certain player but man he was the Met during his time. As far as the Wright comment I’d really like to put those numbers against other players that batted in the same slot as him during those years. 07 is a surprise being that he batted 6th most of the year I think or maybe it was fifth but he sure wasn’t three or four.

    • I don’t really see what difference it should make, unless you think he will hae significantly more opportunities hitting 4th instead of 5th or 3rd (or some other arrangement)?

also the debate points out why you can’t measure “clutch”. There is no objective definition of it. It is like the old saying about the Supreme court and pornography (I can’t tell you what it is, but I know it when I see it).

I still say that “clutch” (meaning guys improving under pressure) does not exist in BB. Really what you are saying for clutch is non choking under pressure.

  • In my experience, which is limited, The only real clutch stat is Strike outs. I ran a experiement a couple years back trying to figure out why Jason Phillips stunk and what I came up with is that Strike outs are the only way to gauge if a player is clutch. Hang with me a sec and I’ll tell you why. Strike outs are the only time that a batter is beat. If he makes contact and makes an out then it’s just a chance thing. If he strikes out he lost and the pitcher won. In clutch situations in late innings managers tend to turn to their best pitchers and thus make it harder for the batter to hit. If you have player X who strikesout 175 times a year he is more likely to strike out in this situation then say player Y who strikes out 50 times a year. This is why Sammy Sosa was unclutch and Moises Alou was clutch. This is the only thing I could find consitent results in.

  • And if you actually believe that this started because I don’ like an individual’s opinions??? Than you don’t know the story AT ALL, you are WAY OFF and completely wrong.
