Comments like this are the reasons why I enjoy reading Ted Berg’s posts.

“Again, like so many annoying arguments in baseball analysis, it comes down to silly and meaningless labels. Pelfrey shouldn’t be handed the Opening Day starter’s job because that’s for True No. 1s and Pelfrey is not a True No. 1. What is that? As long as he’s healthy coming out of Spring Training, he’s going to be in the rotation, right? So what difference does it make if he starts Friday, April 1 or Sunday, April 3?”

What is your deal with a knee brace? If I am his athletic trainer, I do not under any circumstances allow Beltran to step on the field without a brace. It’s something called “Injury Prevention”

Billy Ripken, Matt Vasgersian, & Dan Plesac (MLB Network) all scratching their heads as to why Collins is naming an opening day starter in the middle of January when sometimes teams don’t name one until 3 weeks left of spring training.

I wondered about that too. It seems Collins and Alserson have been making final decisions on players and positions for a long time already. I’ve never, ever heard of such a thing.

Good point. Announcing the opening day pitcher might be premature. But then again, the Wilpons want tickets sold. Let’s see what actually happens during training. I’m pulling for Mike and R.A.

Pelf will give us about 200-220 innings of above average pitching. Guys like Pelf don’t fall out of trees. He’s seriously needed.

I knew Mike Pelfrey was going to be the opening day starter, but would it have been a better idea to see if R.A. Dickey could somehow compete against Big Pelf to see if R.A could be the opening day starter (in other words, give Mike Pelfrey a run for his money?

Pelfrey had better rise to the occasion as he’ll be facing the other teams ace for the first month or so – until the rotation gets out of whack due to weather.

I think he’s got it in him. If nothing else, he’s a big, strong kid and durability has been on his side so far.

It’s good knowing that our Opening Day starter that as you suggest would be fighting for the 5th spot in Philly or SF and the 4th spot in Atlanta, LA, STL, or Milwaukee can beat those team’s #1 or #2 starters as well.

IF Young and/or Capuano both recover and pitch like their old selves, if Beltran isn’t wearing a knee brace then yes Mets have a shot. I want to see Beltran in spring training without a knee brace first. Murphy won’t be starting at 2B but will be a nice addition to bench.

That should be enough to contend for the Wild Card. I think the depth will be better and the team will play better without the “Country Club” attitude. I would not be shocked if this team won 90 games.
