About That $50 Million Dollars
The conventional thinking is this is a throwaway season with the Mets not being able to compete until 2012 after the team clears its books of Oliver Perez, Carlos Beltran, Luis Castillo and possibly Francisco Rodriguez.
However, that’s not a given.
While the Mets should have more financial flexibility next winter, they’ll have a wide range of holes to fill including an outfielder to replace Beltran, at least two starting pitchers and possibly a closer if they don’t bring back Rodriguez.
There’s also the possibility of needing a second baseman and maybe a catcher if Josh Thole doesn’t pan out.
Take away those four contracts and the Mets will have $54 million to play with, but that’s only for one year. That’s probably enough to fill four spots, but will the Mets make four long-term signings?
That doesn’t appear to be Sandy Alderson’s way of doing things.
Another potential hole could be shortstop if Jose Reyes walks after the season.
The bottom line is the Mets could still have a lot of work to do after this season, and possibly next year as well.

I can see your point, but the above scenario assumes that not a single signing or prospect works out for us this season. While unfortunately because it’s the Mets, it’s possible, I’d like to think we can fill at least one or two of those holes internally (that sounded dirty).
2012 probably depends to some extent how 2011 shapes up by the All-Star break. If we’re in it we’ll most likely have some flexibility to get us over the hump and wind up with nothing for Carlos and I hate to say it but possibly 2 prospects 4 years away with Reyes.
If we bust early in 2011 Sandy will look for a best offer for both and that could get save us 2 years and net 5 internal solutions and save the Wilpon the signing bonuses of those 2 prospects.
One cannot discount the possibility that between spending a billion dollars on payroll over the last 8 years, sinking a huge amount of money into the new stadium, getting back considerably less revenue than anyone could have projected, waking up one morning to find out you have considerably less money than you thought, and now having to possibly give back 50 million of that considerably smaller sum along with your principle business (commercial real estate) being down, and possibly being down quite more than average depending on your holdings it’s very possible that the money coming off the books is just a small part of the big picture.
It’s not entirely outside the realm of possibilities that Bud Selig released Sandy Alderson from his duties with MLB to get this Franchise back on a firm footing.
That’s why I’m going to be supporting the Wilpon’s by going to as many Met games as I can, and bringing with and meeting up with, as many friends and family at Citi Field as possible.
The Wilpon’s have not been bad owners, they don’t seek the spotlight like Jerry Jones does. Their not in it by happenstance like Lorinda De Roulet was when she and Grant wouldn’t spend a single extra nickel more than the absolute barest minimum.
They built a great Stadium and designated a large corner of it to kids to have a fun experience for FREE. It’s also immaculately clean which means women enjoy coming to the games more than they did Shea so for you single guys you might very likely meet a hot Met Chick. You can buy an inexpensive ticket and just wander around, get something to eat, have a beer, watch the game from anywhere. It’s like being on a boardwalk except we have our favorite team to watch and root for while we’re there.
The Wilpon’s have tried to give us a World Championship Team numerous times through their tenure and while I have been very critical of the way they have gone about it, at least they have tried and tried very hard. Put their money and a lot of it into trying.
Regardless of the decisions made by the new front office I’m going to support my team in good times and bad. Trust me, a day at Citi beats a day almost anywhere else.
bragging about your park, just shows the lack of knowledge you have and the arrogance you show to all other teams. open your eyes agee, the mets aren’t the only team with a nice new park with clean toilets and kid stuff. every new and fairly new park has all that. Your disgusting new york arrogance is pathetic. go to another park, you’ll see ncer parks and nicer fans, even in the bronx. you little metsies, decades of losing and yet you act superior. you deserve your constant losing.
Thanks for your addition to this conversation.
I have Jackass. For years I talked about Camden, complained about Shea. Love Pittsburgh, CBP, although it’s minor league sized, SF, Petco ect. But I wasn’t comparing our Stadium with anyone else’s, I was just saying our’s is a great day out.
Stop putting the cheese steak in your ass in between bites, it’s affecting your reading comprehension.
T, u brought a tear to my eye(lol).
Who’d a thunk Maifoff may end up a fans’ hero depending upon who’s brought in(Cuban would be an excellent option,IMO)It’s quite possible that they’re planning on a worst case scenerio basis & since the entire action has been sealed from the onset, we’ll never actually know until the dust settles. As I’ve stipulated countless times an outright sale is a crapshoot from a fans’ perspective with no guarantees a more accomplished group takes the reins esp since it’s our small market/midmarket competitiors who’ll decide on who’s the best “qualified” new owner & not necessarily the best one for winning in NY! This isn’t like selling your 10 yr old family sedan without a CARFAX. Does anyone; but me, remember how the new Chicago Cubs owners were going to alter everything returning the Cubbies to their meaningdful stature? WHAT HAPPENED?
’62, What is your opinion on this?
What if it can be proven (shouldn’t be very difficult) that the Money Fred used to purchase Nelson’s share came from a Madoff fund.
At the time that 50% share was valued at 200M.
9 years later that share is valued at 425M.
Which figure do you think the Trustee would be using as a valuation basis for the “clawback”?
T, while I may be incorrect; I believe the Wilpon’s Maidoff portfolio was established after ’02; but I don’yt know for sure since so much is hidden by both the investigator & the Wilpons I suspect the timing of this claim as well as it being filed “under seal” is indicative that it’s greatest value is as a crumb tossed to those that lost the most rather than having any primaface value on it’s own merits. Though as in the past, I can eventually be proven 100% wrong!
Perez and Castillo have done nothing but collect a paycheck in 2010-2011, you don’t have to worry about replacing their production at all. As for Beltran and KRod, you could replace them with the best FA available at their position in a cost nuetral move, and potentially get guys who can replace most of their production cheaper. 2012 rotation probably consists of Santans, Pelfrey, Niese, Dickey and #5 from Young, Cupuano, Meijia, Gee, Harvey. The hardest guy to replace, if it comes to it, is Reyes.
worst case scenerio there by Delcos. Why not add they need a 3B if Wright gets abducted by aliens?
2 SP? maybe. But if Dickey gets a 2 year deal, and Johan can still pitch, it might be 1. Or hell 0, if gee takes over a spot!
C and 2B? Who knows, but they will be both filled cheaply, so no reason the 2012 players (same ones or others) won’t be cheap also. not like there are many expensive ones available anyway.
OF, this could be tricky. Best (cheapest) case, pagan plays a good CF this year, and a young guy or 2 steps up to grab RF for 2012. Worst case, they go shopping for an OF.
K rod likely comes back anyway, and if not, probable that Sandy wouldn’t look to spend top $$ on a pen arm (even a closer) anyway.
Resigning reyes is going to be the key big-$ move to make.
We really dont know how many holes we will have next year till we see how this year shakes out. For all we know the kiddies might actually fill out the holes.
2B- If Havens can stay healthy I would slot him in here
C- Its not like we need Piazzas bat there. If Thole can put up decent numbers and improve defensively then catcher is set
OF- If Pagan has another year like 2010, I’d sign him to a 2-3 year deal and let Duda take right.
Closer- If K-Rods option doesnt vest, I’d try and let Parnell slide in at closer if he shows marked improvement in high leverage situations.
SP- Our rotation in 2012 loos like this:
Santana
Pelfrey
Niese with 2 of Mejia, Gee, Harvey, and a decent FA for #4
I really dont see the need to invest 50 million in all these “holes” when really the only signing we need to do is extend Reyes for 4/65 or something along those lines.
you forgot dickey.
You’re right I did. But he had no contract for 2012. Sorry for the omission!
