Oliver Perez Pitches After 12-Day Layoff
Oliver Perez is no stranger to days off.
As we all know, the Mets would not use Oliver Perez out of the bullpen a lot during the season, thus giving him plenty of time off to ponder his predicament.
It appears the Los Tomateros de Culiacan are taking the same approach with Oliver Perez, as the Amazin’s did.
Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com reports that after a “12-day layoff”, Oliver Perez finally got a chance to pitch. Last night, Oliver Perez went 5 innings, gave up 3 runs (2 of the 3 runs were Solo HR’s), 3 walks, and 4 strikeouts against Caneros de los Mochis.
After last nights start, Oliver Perez is now 3-3, with a 5.18 ERA, and has 26 strikeouts to go with 23 walks in 33 innings pitched in winter ball.

How sad is that? It’s probably like have Mr. Ollie at Double A and having those horrid numbers. Do they REALLLLLY expect him to contribute ANYTHING to the Mets this year? Steve Blass would be better, after he lost it.
Three years after giving Pedro 13.5 per year Omar gave Ollie 12. With no sustained history of success. No real name recognition. Nothing but pure hope and lack of any other options and the really truly incredible thing to me was that even last year Omar was still hoping that Ollie could be a starting pitcher. Still counting on him to come through for us. Last year Omar addressed the lack of HR’s by overpaying Bay but did nothing to address the starting pitching. He took a couple of flyers on Dickey and Escobar and got as much as he could ever have asked from them. Low risk and high reward from one of the two. A big win by Omar right there but there was a guy the Angels signed for 2 years 16 million. Perfect for our stadium, with it’s natural suppression of HR’s and the FA’s high GB rate, low walks. He could have been our missing starter last year and this year but again Omar was still counting on Ollie and 16 million over 2 years was too much to pay for a guy who had recent sustained success. Joel Pinero. Thanks Ollie, Thanks Omar, Thanks J.Wilpon.
Look at the bright side. 26 k’s in 33/IP is not too bad. LoL
OMG- I was thinking the same thing (LOL)
{OFF TOPIC}
Did anyone see the rising apple’s suggestion that maybe the Mets may want to take a look at Capuano?
“…Milwaukee Brewers have put-off negotiations with starting pitcher Chris Capuano, giving the New York Mets (and other pitching-starved teams) the opportunity to pursue his potentially affordable services.”
risingapple.com/2010/12/29/chris-capuano-could-be-an-option-for-the-mets/
Capuano would be perfect!! He has had 2 Tommy John surgeries and hasn’t been a full-time starter since 2006.
Wow! I can actually see your drool of sarcasm.
Before i comment, let me just say (as for background info), that before i started writing here, i wrote at Rising Apple. That was a great site, and i was greatful to be apart of it for a year. Those guys are great!
Now, for their article on Chris Capuano, he would be a “high risk, high reward” kindof deal. Although its the same with Francis, and Young, so he could very well be in the discussion.
Remember when the Mets had to chose who to over pay between ollie and Derek Lowe? Sure, Lowe was 35 at the time, but he had just finished his 7th straight season of 32 or more starts in each season. Since he signed with the Braves, Lowe has made 34 and 33 starts respectively and pitched 194.2 and 193.2 innings pitched respectively while going 31-22 with an ERA in the low 4′s. In the same time, Perez has made 21 starts and pitched a total of 112.1 innings with a 3-9 record and an ERA of 6.81. Both have Scott Boras as an agent…I think this was Boras’ revenge on the Mets for not signing A-Rod in 2000.
Borass really got us good on that one but I don’t think there was anyone else interested in Perez. We bid against ourselves hoping against hope that Ollie would perform up to his contract.
Omar felt like he had no choice because there were no other options in the minors and despite the fact that he knew ahead of time that Ollie was a free agent and who his agent was, he did nothing to have a plan B.
The defense that is always offered for Omar’s numerous bad signings is always “But who else was he going to get?” But that is no defense. that is purely an indictment of how inept he really was. To some people the fact that Omar always painted himself into a corner and then made a bad signing that crippled the team for years to come is understandable because he made “moves.” To me it is the essence of stupidity because he was in fact the one who ensured that he would never have any other options by handing over, in one case unneccesarily, a #1 draft choice and in other cases failed to take back high draft choices when he had a chance.
Madison Bumgarner was in the Majors two years after being drafted in the first round by SF. Omar handed over our # 1 pick in 2007 for a 40 year old LFer without even waiting to see if SF would even offer arb to Alou. He could have just offered arb to Castillo in 2007 and let him prove himself OR better yet picked up a supp draft choice. He could have drafted a starting pitcher out of College but instead drafted relief pitchers. One starting pitcher he did draft in the first round cashed the check and quit. Omar could have checked to see how much this kid liked playing baseball but probably didn’t even bother. He could have checked on Putz’s medical records, same story.
Painting yourself into a corner has cost this franchise the best chance at success we have had in 25 years and is the reason we have had so many rejects on our team in the last couple of years. Other teams suffer injuries that derail their post season chances but they don’t win 70 games because of it. They win 89 in the AL East and barely miss out or go to the NLCS anyway. But then again none of those teams were afraid to walk away from a stupid signing nor we’re they afraid to plan for probabilities and yes even possibilities.

One question. Is there a min number of games played for the Mets to qualify for this list of yours?
My list, some started the year as Starters and some like Samuel came in middle of year. I am sure everyone has their own list.
I thought they gave us less for what they were supposed to.
Alomar could be the 2nd baseman.
HILARIOUS! Seriously, what the hell happened to this guy?! At one time he was looking like he would be a great pitcher for years to come, then we have what we have today
M-E-T-S METS METS METS! I love the Mets! Love the Mets!
