Mets 2010 End Of Year Offseason Report

As we enter into the last remaining hours of 2010, let’s take a quick look at where the Mets are this offseason and what still remains to be done.

To begin, the Mets have yet to fulfill their three most pressing needs and they are:

  1. Acquiring a starting pitcher for the rotation.
  2. Acquiring a left-handed reliever to replace Pedro Feliciano in the bullpen.
  3. Acquiring a fourth outfielder.

Regarding the starting pitcher, the Mets had shown some interest in Freddy Garcia, Chris Young, Jeff Francis and Brandon Webb. The latter has since come off the market after signing with the Texas Rangers. No offers have been made to the remaining three and the Mets have been adamant that they will take their time and hope that their asking prices will come down as January wears on. That said, rumors abound that Jeff Francis may be close to making a decision.

The Mets have been rumored to be interested in several relievers including the very pricey Brian Fuentes which I find very hard to believe, as well as relievers Joe Beimel and, Chad Qualls. Those last two have been bandied about by MetsBlog as far as having some sort of Mets connection or interest, but I haven’t seen this confirmed by any other mainstream site. I mention them only because they’ve now been injected into the web dialog, but take it with a grain of salt as you should all blog sourced rumors.

Absolutely no real rumors regarding a possible fourth outfielder at this time.

From what’s been circulating, the Mets still have about $5-8 million dollars to spend, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they will.

I kind of get the feeling that all three areas of need could eventually be filled internally from within the organization.

There has been talk that Pat Misch could become the Mets’ fifth starter, Michael O’Connor could become Feliciano’s replacement, and Nick Evans could become the fourth outfielder. But as I said, it’s just talk and speculation that is currently circulating in the Mets blogosphere right now.

To date, the Mets have signed C Ronny Paulino, RHP Boof Bonser and RHP D.J. Carrasco to major league deals, and also signed LHP Michael O’Connor to a minor league deal. They selected IF Brad Emaus and RHP Beato in the Rule 5 Draft, and traded LHP Michael Antonini for SS Chin-lung Hu from the Dodgers.

Players who ended last season with the Mets and will not be returning include Hisanori Takahashi, Sean Green, Elmer Dessens, Raul Valdes, John Maine, Chris Carter, Mike Hessman, Pedro Feliciano and Henry Blanco.

Anyhow, that’s where the Mets stand right now.

I wish all of you a very Happy New Year in 2011.

  • Sandy Alderson says we don’t need a left handed reliever. Alderson said that last month, pay attention. Left handed reliever?
Why would any major league baseball team want a left handed reliever?
If Sandy says we don’t need one, that’s good enough for me.

  • After all Alderson is a genius you know,
    “Money Ball” “cybrostatratics”

    • Oh gosh Lifelong….. Be prepared for the personal assaults. Didn’t you get the word that criticizing Sandy Alderson and co. makes you a hater, a Nazi, a gutless person crying out for attention, and oh my even a person with an empty life lol……
Those making the accusations of course, are perfect people and all live in their glass houses!!!!!!
      Happy New Year.

      • You are better off just saying what it is your not happy with then what you are doing which is making yourself look like some victim.

When you start with saying in a comment even if it is meant as a joke that your considered a nazi? That with all due respect is just stupid. That one idiot is dumb enough to say that to someone doesn’t mean you should now run around and keep using that as a talking point against those that disapprove what you may be saying.

    • I don’t get it Lifelong?

You must expect the Mets to only fail then under Alderson with your sarcastic remarks toward him.

Because if you think he may be successful then all these remarks now only to then possibly down the road say Alderson did a good job will make you look like the biggest hypocrite then.

That is what I don’t get? Why have all these personal attacks against Alderson’s intelligence now before you know if his decisions were wrong or not only to you yourself look bad down the road if Alderson actually has success?

      • Would that be “attack!” #1 METSFAN?

        • If asking you a question is an attack then I’d say your definition of an attack is in need of being redefined.

  • I think Sandy’s “ball” dropped like 10 years ago…….
    Ba.Bmmmm… *rimshot

    • You see this METSFAN?

What Lifelong wrote is considered hate. He/she is not criticizing a move or decision by Alderson but rather simply taking pot shots at Alderson’s intelligence.

If the same thing was said to you or say Lifelong himself I am sure you both would have a quick reply belittling the person who made such a comment toward yourselves.

So when you see someone say “haters” remember it’s not for criticizing a strategy or decision but rather for an unwarranted remark toward the person himself.

      • Yes I will admit I think any Major League baseball General Manager who think his team does not need a left handed relief pitcher is stupid.

        • Then you should apologize to Alderson now cause you will not find him saying anywhere that the Mets do not need a left handed reliever.

        • Please provide a link to where he said those exact words. I mean it’s not unlike Mets fans to spin whatever he says to perpeturate their own misery.

      • Not only that, I also made fun of his low-hangers…

  • This is fun guys but I gotta get some work done before I leave work at 11am for the day.
Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Suckers! Happy New Year all! Be safe!

    • You have a happy new years as well Lifelong. I’d go get work done as well if I was being called out and didnt have a proper reply to them.

  • I apprecaite that you make very clear what are facts, rumors and speculation. It’s quite refreshing to see. Thank you.

I’m not at all dismayed as some are regarding the lack of any major signings. I really didnt expect any so I dont understand what I see as false outrage.

We already have our big signings in Bay, Beltran, Krod, etc. Lets just hope for good health and some better luck and we’ll be just fine this season.

  • Who needs left-handed relief pitchers???

“Alderson added that in his stops with San Diego and Oakland, his bullpens sometimes have employed no left-hander, with right-handed relievers capable of getting out lefty hitters. So while the Mets will be in search for left-handed relief help, it is not essential.” -Adam Rubin

“Bullpens are funny,” Alderson said. “I’ve been associated with some teams that have had great bullpens with guys with virtually no experience. You say there’s a dearth of arms that may be experienced guys — guys that have several years of major league service. Some of the best bullpen types for the sixth, seventh, eighth innings don’t have much major league service at all.”

-Sandy Alderson as reported by Adam Rubin ESPNNew york.com

    • You take this as alderson saying he does not need a lefty reliever?

I’d read that more carefully if I was you.

The only one that saying a left is not essential is Rubin not Alderson.

Really lifelong I expected you to at least be able to discern a comment made by Alderson as opposed to Rubin.

Rubin only says that “AT TIMES” Alderson in the past had a bullpen that employed no lefty in the pen. It doesn’t ask if this was for an entire season for a few weeks or days or if it was due to some injury. It only mentions that he had righties capable of getting lefties out. Which is a far cry from saying Alderson says he doesn’t need a lefty in the pen.

Now if this to you means Alderson says he doesn’t need a lefty then I will just agree to disagree.

Let me know when you have a quote from Alderson saying he doesn’t need a lefty in the pen and I will then reconsider my view on this.

    • I’d go back to work if I was you if you wanna be out by 11:00am. Oh only a few minutes left hurry!

  • Despite the comments of a few “overly-frustrated” fans for lack of a better word. I am pretty much convinced that on Opening day 2011 the Mets will have fielded a team of 25 players and there will be a left handed reliever in the pen.
I know I know. How can I be so sure? Call it faith I guess but I am pretty sure Alderson will field a team of 25 men and yes even though I admit I can’t see into the future like some on MMO can. I believe we will have at least 1 lefty other than KRod in the pen.

I am sure if I am wrong someone will call me out and it will be deservedly so if I am wrong.

  • The Mets have actually made more significant moves so far this year, than they did at the same point last off season.

Most of the ML guys signed last year did not show up until January or February. Barajas, Dickey, Bay and taka all in that group.

I agree with NJ that, purely IMO they will have a lefty (actually 2, since I think Misch could be the long/swing man) in the pen, largely because of Philly.

But, as usual, some people are ignoring the key point of what Alderson said (and the fact that is was just conceptual). He said they may not have a lefty if THEY HAD RH PITCHERS THAT WERE CAPABLE OF GETTING LEFTIES OUT” Not quite the same thing. So, who cares if they get a RH with say a cutter and change that kill lefties instead of a mediocre LHP that does not fair well against them?

I also am not expecting more OF brought in. evans, even Pridie, are likely in house options for the #4. Might still find someone else, but I don’t consider it a major unfilled hole.

SP, now that they still have to do. And I think they really need to bring in 2 more since they are seriously short of depth.

  • Love the Mets.

  • We will get a leftty for the pen and a starting pitcher by Spring Training. As a 4th outfielder if some one is availiable a cheap price we will get one otherwise we will use on from the 40 man lineup.
