Mets 40 Man Roster: One For The Ages
The Mets recently made some changes to their 40 Man Roster as they get ready for the Winter Meetings and the Rule 5 Draft which will take place while there in Florida.
I decided to break down the roster into age groups to kind of give us an idea of how young or how old our current base of players are. I broke them down into three groups.
The list still includes Sean Green and John Maine who may or may not be on the 40 Man Roster after Thursday when the Mets must decide to either tender or non-tender them.

And we expect to win the division? Please!
Why are guys like Nickeas & Hernandez on the 40 man roster? So that maybe they’ll provide some magic such as hitting a home run with a broken foot??? They don’t have better players to protect than these 2 bums???? C’mon Sandy! You can do better!!
Nickeas is on there because the Mets have about 4 Catchers in their entire organization.
my guess is he kept Hernandez around because he’s a defensive stud, so he probably values him as a late inning defensive infield replacement. which means he’s probably going offensive at 2B, thank god. probably Murph.
Um, wrong even though that’s what you would LIKE to happen,
The reality is it’s much more likely Ruben Tejada makes the opening day roster at 2B than Daniel Murphy being the opening day 2B for Mets. I would have to see it to believe it. And in the unlikely event Luis Castillo is the opening day 2B, Tejada will still be on the roster because right now he’s the Mets BEST defensive 2B. Murphy could be on roster too but as a player off the bench.
If Murphy’s defense comes around — perhaps a big if — his bat will bury Tejada. Ruben is a nice kid but he needs to eat some spinach. He has an AA bat, nothing more. He can’t handle a high fastball.
PS: I like the way he bunts, though.
two hilarious quotes here…
The reality is it’s much more likely Ruben Tejada makes the opening day roster at 2B than Daniel Murphy being the opening day 2B for Mets.
Tejada will still be on the roster because right now he’s the Mets BEST defensive 2B.
that one is especially funny. the BEST defensive 2B? where are you getting this from?? Ruben Tejada has a career .937 Fld% at 2B in the minor leagues. .937!! that is ABYSSMAL. and in the majors this year it was .972, with a negative UZR. You do know that Luis Castillo and Luis Hernandez BOTH blew Tejada away at 2B this year right? nope probably not. in Fld% AND uzr. Either one of them is better than Tejada. Murphy would prob even be better, and he can hit. Get your facts man before you make ridiculous claims. were you really just going by a couple of sparkling plays he may have made?
Ruben Tejada is WORTHLESS. Sandy knows it, which is why he will not see the majors this year. He shouldn’t even be in triple A yet. Omar is a clown.
You’re completely insane. You’re relying on meaningless numbers to tell you this? Funny, i WATCHED him play, heard the pros analyze him on TV and a CLOWN like you is determining he’s worthless? Tell that to Ron Darling, Keith Hernandez, & Gary Cohen and countless other professionals who all raved about Tejada and naturally unanimous in saying he just has to get his offensive game together. And he will.
Tejada will be on a major league roster THIS SEASON. Last year was his first in big league ball. Why won’t you take my $100.00 bet and put your money where your mouth is? I know why cuz you con’t believe you’re own baseless predictions.
I would raise the bet to $1,000.00 but I doubt you have that kind of money. Tejada being in the big leagues in 2011 – easy money.
Seriously, Ruben Tejada isn’t even a Mets top 20 prospect, where are you getting this info on his mysterious defensive prowess of his? Who started the rumor Tejada is good on defense? He cant hit or field at a major league level. Forget what Gary Cohen said, he is just a Mets fan that gets paid to call ballgames. He’s also the same guy that said Francoeur added some much needed positive attitude to the Mets clubhouse. A lot of good that did us.
..and he was right on ALL counts. The Mets season would have been a lot better if we had healthy Beltran, Bay, and Reyes all year so it doesn’t matter what Franceour did – you guys lost all credibility with me anyway by continuing to rehash the Frenchy stuff. I never saw such a group of people pay so much attention to a guy that hit .240 in all of my life. He got off to a great start and unfortunately for the Mets, he stopped hitting. That’s it – but he was big help to us for awhile. That’s baseball.
I don’t care if someone isn’t a top 20 prospect. Mike Piazza was drafted what?……62nd or something? Did you see Tejada play? Obviously you weren’t trusting what you saw, instead you run to your numbers that tell YOU want to think. I’m not saying the kid will be a star – AND HE’S JUST A KID-REMEMBER???
But, in my opinion (and I bet a lot of other normal baseball fans, too) he’s the Mets best defensive 2B right now and he’ll learn to hit better. Yes, I would start him over Luis Castillo and as for Murphy…I’ll have to see him at 2B at the MLB level before I believe it.
meaningless numbers??? LOL. those numbers are THE numbers that tell you how good a player is defensively. just like your batting average tells you how good a hitter is right? Tejada was the WORST second baseman we had this year. The numbers are a lot more accurate than you “watching” the games. And if you really “watched” the games you would have seen it.
and I would take that bet in two seconds but to get my money I would either have to give you my address or meet you and I don’t really care to do either.
No – ever hear of PayPal? So is that $100.00 bet on? Tejada WILL be in the majors next season…and right now he’s the Mets best defensive second baseman
Tejada had triple the errors in way less innings than Luis Castillo, and had worse range than him. Castillo’s fld% was .993. Still not quite sure where your proof is to back up that Tejada is the best 2B on the team. do you even have any? or are you still sticking with “I watched the games”.
All Tejada has to do is get his offensive game together? That’s all? Should be easy. But in fact it’s not.
That’s all any .230 hitter ever had to do since time immemorial. Funny, but when they’re out of the game for three years, nobody ever remembers them. It’s a lot harder to find a guy to hit a small round ball thrown at 90 mph with a cylindrical bat than it is to find a guy to catch the ball with an eleven inch glove. Good ol’ Joe Garagiola used to say on the game of the week, “gloves fall out of trees, but bats are hard to find, and when you get one, you better hold onto it.”
I know hitting it’s not easy, dope.
You’re one of those people who pick apart a sentence and when you’ve got something to expound on – you go off topic. Don’t waste my time.
Words have meanings, something you have yet to learn. I guess it’s not important to someone who falls back on the tired cliche that he has coached a lot. You quickly resort to name calling. Sad.
based on who has been exposed to the Rule 5 draft, no, they don’t relaly have anyone better to protect!
They also left room (and a few disposables like hernandez) to add more players when they come along.
And don’t forget, lots of the best talent in the system is not yet on the 40 man, because they aren’t required to be.
Some of those players are just being sheltered from the rule 5 draft, but I think the Mets have very young nucleus to build upon over the next season or two. Hopefully Reese Havens develops and takes over everyday at 2B by 2012 and we’ll have obe onf the best young infields in baseball.
I love this team to death, but man, do they suck.
