Niese Rocked, Mets Lose 7-5

Jonathon Niese was abused in the first inning and that set the tone for the Mets and left them playing from behind for the entirety of the game, losing the series to the Marlins, by losing tonight 7-5. Game Notes Jonathon Niese was horrible in the first inning, giving up five of the six runs he would ultimately allow, including walking one. Niese’s control today was horrible, walking six batters. His best performances of the [...]

Looking Towards 2011, I Like What I See!

So the Mets got mathematically eliminated last night, big deal. I did get to see many positive things to build upon for next season, and I’m choosing to focus on that. In this new series of graphics, I want to highlight some of the players that I believe will have more prominent roles in 2011 and could help pave the way to a better future. Jon Niese, Josh Thole, Bobby Parnell, Lucas Duda, Dillon Gee, [...]

2011 Bench?

2010 pointed out the Mets lack of a solid overall bench, and the mismanagement of some call ups and how they were used is also a major area of concern for me. Jesus Feliciano cannot successfully be the fifth outfielder for the Mets. His lack of pop or any kind of doubles power makes him a decent defensive outfielder. Keeping him on the bench instead of a defensive wizard or a great hitter is stupid. [...]

In Praise Of Jerry Manuel

I write this morning to bring attention to the Mets Manager, Jerry Manuel, a man who has been with the team for only a short time, comparatively speaking, and has always maintained his own persona and has kept the Mets on an even keel under his guidance.   Just remember, Jerry doesn’t play the game, he manages – big difference.   Recently, the polish, or the patina has worn off some of the Mets baseball hierarchy [...]

Morning Grind: Changing Faces, Part 1

Top of the mornin’, Met Nation. Looks like the season has all but been decided and the trade talks have been intensified. This time, we may actually see real movement in an effort to improve our ball club. For the next three days, I’ll offer a small three-part commentary on the state of the team going forward and some of the hot trade talk already stirring in the Met Nation. Somebody said change is good. Take Us To [...]

David Wright’s Opposite Field Power

The three-run homer that Elmer Dessens gave up tonight in the eighth inning to Gaby Sanchez that wound up costing the Mets a loss didn’t really bother me tonight. The team is out of contention, and at this point, all I want to see is some solid, fundamental baseball as well as some clutch hitting in order to play the role of spoiler. Plus Dessens doesn’t exactly factor into the Mets long-term plans. What I [...]

When Will Wright Learn That Actions Speak Louder Than Words?

David Wright was a guest on WFAN this morning, and Matt Cerrone of MetsBlog.com captured this quote from Wright, “I think there needs to be changes.  There needs to be a new look, some new life.  If that involves the coaching staff, that’s up to Mr. Wilpon and the Front Office. I think the players are as much to blame as any one else.  I think there needs to be some sort of change to [...]

Joe Torre Apologizes, Officially Closes Door On Mets

Updated 10:30 PM From ESPN NY, more comments from Joe Torre. “I apologize. He is right that I shouldn’t have said that, and I don’t think I did. Somebody asked me if I would take a call from Fred Wilpon. I have known Fred Wilpon forever. I won’t be managing the Mets, and I thought I made that clear yesterday. It was about taking a call as opposed to looking for a job. I went to [...]

Dessens Demolished, Mets Lose 5-2

Game Notes Mike Pelfrey was about as good as you can get today and had nothing to show for it. Pelf went seven innings, allowing one earned run and another unearned, giving up five hits, striking out four and walking zero. The gameplan was in place all game and he executed it, locating masterfully. Pedro Feliciano came out in the eighth inning and after a mid-season stumble, has regained form. He has allowed two runs [...]
