Mets Lose 9-3 To Braves Despite An Ollie Appearance

Mets drop the opener to the Braves 9-3. Misch got beaten up early and often and the Mets had to go to the bullpen, including getting Oliver Perez into the game. Mets offense had nine hits, but only scored three runs. Mets are now one game below .500. A goal for the Mets.

Game Summary

Pat Misch has likely pitched his last start for the Mets this season. After giving up hit after hit and run after run, Misch only lasted three innings pitched. Misch was just laying his pitches in and was getting beating around badly by the Braves. Misch pitched three innings and gave up five runs on eight hits and a homerun. He did record one strikeout before his outing ended. Mejia had 7 K’s by that point. Just saying.

Mets had to go their bullpen early as everyone expected. Elmer Dessens was the first pick by Jerry and pitched a 1-2-3 fourth inning. Had a troubled fifth inning, but got out of it unscathed. Former Brave, Manny Acosta, got the call for the sixth inning. The “Acostalypse” occurred as he gave up three runs on three hits and a walk in his inning of work.

Oliver Perez made his first appearance into a game since August first and was greeted by a homerun on the second pitch he threw.  Welcome back Ollie, we’ve missed you. Finished out the inning with two walks as well.

Igarashi rounded out with pitching the eighth inning giving up one hit and a strikeout.

The Mets offense has been a joke lately, but the punchline is starting to hurt. Mets could only scrounge up three runs despite nine hits. RBIs from Thole, Pagan and Hernandez. Wright and Ike, were like Wright and Ike of now. Mets were 1-14 with RISP and left 12 men on base.

Ike Davis and David Wright had terrible at-bats in the game. Combined for 1-10 with six strikeouts.

Jeff Francoeur had two hits on the night. To go with his two strikeouts.

Josh Thole had his first triple of the season. Second of his career. He has been showing more power lately.

Turning Point

Homerun from Jayson Heyward.

Game Ball

Ollie? Best choice, I guess.

Up Next

Jon Niese goes for his ninth win of the season against the Braves is the second game of a four game series. Atlanta will have rookie lefty, Mike Minor, on the mound for them. In Minor’s last start he pitched six inning and struck out twelve batters in his second career win. Game time is 7:10 PM.

  • Good thing Pat the Savior was brought up at the behest of the fans. How’s that 0-4, 5.12 looking now? Where’s the love?

    • I was thinking the same thing. Might as well give Mejia a couple of starts.

  • We got:
“Mets Lose … Despite An Ollie Appearance”

    I expected:
“Mets Lose … Because of An Ollie Appearance”

    he he he

  • Xtreemlcon I have to believe that your more venting frustration rather than taking a cheap shot at Pat Misch. How can you blame Misch? Misch is pitching like you would expect a border-line major leaguer to pitch like. The real question in my mind is, why don’t the Mets take this four game series against the Braves seriously?
Four games! A four game series against the division leader, a chance to gain four games in the standings! This is our playoffs! Isn’t it?
If we would have won these four games we would have been looking at a legitimate chance at the Wild Card.
So that begs the question, why would you pitch Pat Misch? Wouldn’t you set up the rotation last week so that Santana, Pelfrey, and Neise are pitching? Or even bring up Henry Medja to start the game tonight knowing Henry M. is coming up Wednesday when the rosters expand anyway. I just don’t get it?
ANd why not start Carlos Beltran? Beltran needed 5 inngs off to rest?
What the heck? Manuel said. “I think a day here and there does him more good mentally than physically.” Manuel said this about Beltran yesterday. Manuel can’t be stating that he planned on benching Beltran for the 1st game in Atlanta?? Could he?!? Are we trying to win important games or not?
I can’t argue with bringing in Elmer Dessens because he has really pitched well this year but why give Perez innings? The game isn’t over. Manuel made it crystal clear that Perez will be used as nothing more than a mop-up pitcher the remainder of this year. So when Manuel brings Perez into the game tonight does that tell us that Manuel considers the game lost? Anyone watching the Mets this year would have to assume that? Wouldn’t they? Or did Manuel suddenly have a change of heart and think Perez can provide good pitching in an very important series?? Jesus! Such a f’ing mystery?! Why?! I have soooooooo had it with Manuel’s friggin mind games! It’s enough already!

    • No, I have nothing against Misch. The shot was more towards the general internet fan base clamoring for his call-up a month ago. As if his performance to date wasn’t an inevitablity. I have no issue with the rotation being set up the way it is because it’s a four game series and the odd man out this time around is Dickey. It’s unreasonable and unfair to ask Misch to go on only three days rest to finish the Houston series so he doesn’t face the Braves. That’s a bad message to send.

I also disagree with your assessment of Jerry’s managing tonight. There were no mindgames. I think it was a good time to sit Beltran who’s been slumping and moreover, was 2-12 career vs. Jurrjens.

And as far as Perez is concerned, anyone who’s watched the Mets this year knows an 8-3 deficit in the 7th is a loss. Yes, Perez gave up the run (probably a success, considering……..only one run), but the Mets had three runs when he came in and still only had three runs when the game ended. So yes, the game was over in the 7th.

Jerry was also probably “asked” to use Ollie in this series after Ollie’s public comments about his usage. Five runs to the Mets to like 500, so yes, use him now because you hope there are closer games coming up and you already got your once-a-month Ollie card out of the way.

      • You explained yourself well. We just disagree. I don’t think Beltran should have been “benched.” I don’t think a manger should determine playing time based on what public comments his players make in regard to their lack of playing time.
I disagree with you that the game was over in the 7th inng.
Lastly regarding I disagree with you that Manuel was not playing mind-games tonight. Manuel chooses not play Beltran but then suddenly decides in the middle of the game that he is mentally rested and ready to play? Last week Manuel gave his starting pitchers an extra days rest to set up the rotation so that Henry M. and Pat Misch’s pitching days coincided. I guess the thinking here is that Henry M. could easily replace Misch in the rotation? Henry M. is coming up in 2 days anyway. Heck! I would even put money on it that Henry M. is sitting around the Atlanta visitors locker room right now with the team just not officially on the roster until Wednesday.
Lastly why not try to win all four games?

        • I have more even Lastlys to make put I think we’ll never agree so I’ll save it.

        • Manuel DID try to win the game when he had his best chance by pinch-hitting Beltran. Sending him to hit on his off day means that with a good chance to take the lead, he put one his best hitters up in a high leverage spot. That’s trying to win.

And if it was public knowledge that Misch and Mejia were on the same rotation as far back as last week, why were you suggesting above teh Mets set up their rotation yet again so Misch doesn’t pitch tonight?

          • XMan,
Do you think this is a big series for the Mets?
Why wasn’t Henry M. starting this game?
Why wasn’t Beltran starting this game?
            Why did Perez pitch tonight?

            • I don’t think this was a very big series for the Mets. If they win it 3-1, they’re still 8 games out of first place and behind 5 teams in the Wild Card. What difference does that make?

Mejia wasn’t starting this game because he’s in the minor leagues and started for Buffalo. I don’t get your point.

Beltran wasn’t starting this game because he’s less than two months off a return from major surgery, has been in a bad slump recently (5-35) and was hitting .167 career against today’s starter to boot. Then he came in to pinch hit as the go-ahead run and stayed in because during the inning in which he pinch hit, the pitcher he struggled against was replaced. This was, of course, before Manny Acosta rendered all subsequent strategies irrelevant.

I can’t tell you exactly why Perez pitched but if I had to venture a guess with this team, due to Ollie’s publicly made statements on how he’s (not) been used, Jerry was leaned on by someone higher up to get him in a game, and a five-run deficit in the 7th inning is out of reach, so that’s where’d he do the least harm.

It’s ok to disagree, but I admit I don’t really understand some of your logic. I feel you’re trying to find fault where there is none.

  • I find comic relief in watching this team…they’re just that bad

    • Alex. Please read my post. I only wish they were only “bad.”

  • Interesting that the Misch spot in the starting rotation should have been filled by the pitcher we never got at the trading deadline – the Mets havbe lost all four games he started.

And it’s not that he’s pitched that bad. As stated, Ike and Wright had six k’s between them.

Thole hit a no out rbi triple and the Mets couldn’t score another run thanks to Beltran playing pepper with the pitcher, a Pagan K with the bases loaded and one out, etc.

The team is an embarrassment right now with this Ollie sideshow going on.

I have no idea what Omar and the Wilpons are thinking right now but they should be ashamed.

This is a team that was a half game out of first and in first place in the wildcard as late as the end of June. Additions to the roster should have been made then but nothing was done…and then it was too late.

    Terrible, terrible season.

    • Hasn’t pitched that bad? 5.14 ERA, sir.

    • I agree with everything you have written. The Met GM and his team do such a great job coping with a beleaguered pitching staff earlier in the year and then this…? It’s like someone whispered in the GM’s ear and said, “psst…! Stop trying so hard. We’re ok with not winning.”

  • What a Misch-take!

Couldn’t resist. Well, he’s not horrible, just not good enough.

I don’t know why I watched this game. Any shred of hope that the Mets could go into Atlanta and work a miracle is dashed.

Chris the Animal Carter… “Nuff said.

Perez in the game…can you have something more farcical than a farce?

  • Screw Mish and ollies appearance…the mets looked truly dead out there. they kept focusing on their faces and they looked like life hasnt been kind to them in years…

They were losing the game brutally and would get mad about the strike zone and argue calls- who cares?

Beltran just looks listless like he doesnt want to be there. Ike strikes out and he rolls his eyes and just has this look i cant believe i stuck out…

Wright is very scared clearly about getting beaned. You throw anything inside, he freaks the fk out and loses all type of focus…

I want to know of a single mets that looks happy because I just dont see it. Maybe Dickey when he is realizing he is sticking his dickey to a lot of people. Ike davis is out five hitter, that must be a killer and be in their minds…
must suck to know that basically .203 batting average with runners in scoring position and two outs…your team simply stopped believeing a long ass time ago that they could win.

and that 1-43 record when trailing after 8….just tells you what the mets are…Non believers, they dont beleive in their team how are they gonna believe in themselves?

  • The Mets lost the game in the 1st inning when Wright and Ike struck out with 2 mans on bases.
    I mean…They both can’t hit outside pitches.
You know and I know outside pitches are coming but they wait for the pitches right in the middle.
Ike is a rookie but Wright?
Wright is so scared of inside pitches that I am starting to wonder about his manhood with his squeaky voice and all.

    • I think your Wright. It’s difficult to watch Wright being pitched too by pitchers who obviously brush him inside then work him away. He looks like a beaten man.

      • I’m sorry to see David Wright become spooked. Understandable and based on past players he may need another year to recuperate from his beaning.

The Ike thing is something else entirely. He has a problem of another sort between his ears. This guy will have a mediocre career (at best) if he doesn’t wise up. Summary: Bad attitude, bad swing.

        • LMFAO @ recuperate from his beaning. Newsflash to all the suckered Met fans. Wright has been a JOKE since the 2006 Cardinal series. This guy doesn’t get enough big hits. Last night in the most important game of the season, Wright performed like the CHUMP he has always been in big spots. It’s really simple with Wright. His talent level isn’t so high, when he doesn’t have Carlos Delgado around to save his bacon. Wright can’t hit the hard stuff unless he “cheats”/jumps fastballs. That’s why he looks so miserable against the breaking ball. That’s always been the case, but when you have a stud in the order cleaning up for you (Delgado) less pressure is placed on you to produce. You can afford to guess more often and “cheat” on pitches. Wright is a classic cheater @ the plate. Problem is his massive failures in the clutch are magnified without stars like Beltran and Delgado to wipe up his messes.

You don’t win with Wright as the main bat in your lineup. You need proof? Check out the last two seasons. And sorry, but the beaning Wright suffered was 4 months into the season. Last year, Wright was performing like a scrub without Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran in the order.

  • The Misch experiment is over, he did ok last year, had his opportunity to win a major league game but he has shown that his stuff and lack of location is not worthy of a Major League starting pitcher.
Beltran playing CF turned that hit by Infante or Prado, allowed Heyward to score from first by a ball that did not go to wall.
Beltran, not the reason we lost, can’t plant and stop to throw and tonight he finally gets an x-base hit for the 1st time in weeks, when it doesn’t count.
What a pathetic display by all.
What is it with Mets and Braves, Beltran used to eat up this team at Turner field and he will be back in CF next year unless he has a revelation for the betterment of team.
Doubt it cause he would do it this year if he wanted to help team.

    • Hey Sarge,
Good eyes on the Beltran play! But I saw it a different way. You wrote “…can’t plant and stop to throw.” I saw the play as Beltran choosing not to stop quickly. I know, its a a difficult to gauge and determine how a player approaches a play. But I really do think that Beltran playing right now is a lot more contrived than people think. I think Beltran made a conscious decision NOT to stop quickly. I’m not saying Beltran doesn’t care, or is not trying, I think it’s far more complicated than that. Someone on this board once described Beltran as a “slow healer.” I think that term, “slow-healer” is a good way to describe Beltran. When Beltran feels like the can gracefully make a quick plant, pivot and throw without fear of hurting is knee or looking foolish(yes I think there is a little of that in Beltran’s game)we will see the “old Beltran.”

  • When Beltran came back with his hollow shell, the season was over.
I feel bad getting down on Wright too much.
Even piazza couldn’t do too much in this situation.
Manuel is very thoughtful man and a good teacher, but he has to go.
2006 was our year but the inexperienced manager blew it.
Like I said 2012 will be our year.

    • well technically the season was over when francouer was hot at the end of last year, setting things up for him to get playing time this year, instead of getting the wood chipper.

      • How about next year?
With Belran at center, Pagan will play right with Carter as the 4th outfielder.
It will be strange to have a lead glove as the 4th outfielder.
But I saw something funny in the 1st inning of the last night’s game.
Atlanta walked Carter to striked out Wright and Ike.
That is respect . Or contempt for Wright and Ike?
        Maybe Both.

  • I was reading something by Andy Martino of the Daily News talking about Jeff Wilpon visiting the dugout. Afterward he told reporters he isnt making any decisions or answering questions about the team until October. Is he kidding me? He cant answer questions regarding the team? If not him than who?

  • Of course Wilpon isn’t taking questions. How would Wilpon explain that
Henry M. pitched 8 strong innings tonight in AAA when the Mets have a ned for a 5th starter?!
The Mets would rather have Pat Misch pitch rather Henry M?
Aren’t the rosters expanding in 2 days? Wouldn’t it be reasonable to assume that Mejeda will be joining the Mets then in 2 days?
Why wouldn’t the Mets have had Mejeda pitch tonight instead of Misch?
It’s just mind boggling to me!

  • Last night was more the exception lately. The starting pitching has been very good for the last month. Misch is a journeyman number 5 starter and hardly the reason the Mets are not making a wild card run. Fans and media alike were calling for the Mets to bring him up. Well, they bought him up and now you see why he was in AAA most of the season. People who are still talking playoffs are delusional. Going into Atlanta the team was playing .500 ball after 130 games. Why would anyone think they would suddenly be able to win at an incredible rate now? Like Parcells says, “You are what your record says you are.” The problem has been the line up not producing runs or hitting with men on base. This has been a problem for several years now. There is an organizational problem. Poor ownership, poor player evaluation, poor management, and poor performance on the field. There is no quick fix or instant turn around.

    • i thought parcells says “are you going to eat those fries ?”

  • This team Sucks. 1-14 with RISP. Wright who should be traded and gone by now couldn’t even lay down a ball to the right side to plate a run. Even the ’62 Mets were a better team. This team is garbage. You Wright lovers, please let me tell you the guys you rag on Frenchy,Thole and Davis were the only ones with hits and playing like they care. The rest are losers. They should be all gone. This isn’t Manuel’s fault or Minaya’s fault. This team should be taken to jail and locked up for fraud. I can’t watch them anymore. It’s like a Rookie League team playing in a big league ballpark. Boy Atlanta and the rest of the teams they play are sure going to get fat on these guys. Trade ‘em all and get rid of the stench coming from this clubhouse. Disgusting. now tell me how you really feel Lou. (oh yeah, all you Wright lovers, pleez tell me again how much you love him).

    • Lou, I love your posts but I also love Wright as a player. Is it you or me who is conflicted? Maybe both? Don’t count on me to agree with you on this subject.

Frenchy,Thole and Davis? C’mon Lou. Only Thole makes contact and he’s a slap hitter. The other two guys will not be long remembered other than if they take a job in a company that makes electric fans.

      • No I am not conflicted. Did you watch the same David Wright at the plate that I saw last night in Atlanta. Forget about a hit , when you can’t even hit a ball to the right side to get a run home with less than 2 outs (after all the game was 5-3 at the time and 5-4 would have gotten us closer and then who knows, this was way before the game got out of hand and against Juergens who had poor control and walked 5 guys) you are not a mjaor leaguer in my book, I repeat not a major leaguer. This is fundamental baseball, nothing heroic. He pops out, doesn’t even work the count. No, let the man go. I am not impressed with this guy no matter how many stats you throw out and I don’t care if we settle for a lesser guy. We are a below 500 team and you are telling me that this guy is so indispensable that we will be worse without him? I say so what-watching him at the plate and the futility of it all with runners in scoring position and watch him fail time after time it is time for me to move on with him and the Mets too.

  • gripe about Wright all you want, but there aren’t that many good 3b out there, he’s in the top 10. If we had a top 10 guy at every position ( see 1b, 2b, C, RF ), I think we would be in contention. you wright haters are po’d because our best guy isn’t good enough, but it doesn’t mean he’s not good, it’s just that the rest of them aren’t.

if you think pagan is so much better, watch his ab against jurrjens with 1 out and second and third last night again.

    • You need to analyze what this guy does when the pressure is on and he is in key situations?

      • i agree he’s not good at it, but I doubt kevin kouzmanoff is much better. any 3b that’s any good will be held to tightly by their teams. you’ll end up with a first class scrub who drives in 45 runs and can’t hit in pressure situations OR in the second inning or with nobody on.

and yes, he needs a bat behind him, big deal. I don’t see Ike Davis batting behind Teixiera or Pujols, do you ? Seriously, jeter has six all stars behind him and bats like .260, and he’ll make 25 million next year. Give the dude a break already.

        • Look.
Wright is at best as the 3rd or 4th best player who tacks on extra runs againt the middle relievers.
But Everybody is treating him as the man, calling him MVP.
Most of his defensive errors happens at tight situations.
          Atlanta knew what’s what.
1st inning last night. Atlanta walked Carter to strike out MVP.
          Come on …

          • I have to add that it was the first and the second occupied and 1 out.
Can you imagine walking a sub to face the MVP with 2 men on bases?
Atlanta knows something the Mets fans refuse to face.

        • My problem is, I am an old timer and I got spoiled on third baseman like Craig Nettles, and Scott Brosas (the one man wrecking crew in the world series) and watching Chipper Jones (the Met killer). They all hit in pressure situations. You don’t need a bat behind you when all you are asked to do is plate a run by at the very least hitting a ground ball to the right side or a sacrifice fly. that takes bat control pitch selection. Major leaguers are paid to that and I don’t see it with this guy. Sorry, after watching him last night and seeing him go 0-5 last week-I am done being a
David Wright rah-rah guy. He could leave the Mets and I could care less.Remember we are a sub 500 team.part of that is on his shoulders.

          • A team of Scott Brosius … hahaha

The reason why he raked in the series is because every pitcher thought they had one guy they could relax with and get out. Same with Aaron Boone. Stick any .260 hitter on a team of all-stars and he’ll rake for a week or two until the league catches on to him. Google Marcus Thames if you think I’m off the mark.

            • Ah, Mr. Brosas was a Babe Ruth in the
World Series-it was a thing of beauty! His one shining moment in the sun! I saw it on tv and I will remember it forever. This is why I remember him!
