According to Jon Heyman, Jenrry Mejia will get a chance to start very soon.

The baseball gods were listening!

Top Mets pitching prospect Jenrry Mejia made his Triple-A debut a memorable one as he delivered a memorable and dominating performance for the Buffalo Bisons last night against the Syracuse Chiefs.

Mejia actually took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before finally letting up a solo home run to Michael Martinez. Mejia didn’t get the win due to a lack of run support, but his manager Ken Oberkfell was impressed by his swagger and confidence.

The young right hander was electrifying and struck out nine batters while walking one in eight innings of work, and throwing 66 of his 103 pitches for strikes. His fastball was clocked at 95-97 mph, and his curveball was outstanding.

Jenrry Mejia‘s next start is scheduled for Saturday, but I’m wondering if it will come against the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs… or for the Mets against the Chicago Cubs. Hey why not?

Went to my first Mets game, a Mayors Trophy game at Shea, in '73. We beat the Yankees 8-4 and I was hooked. I marched in two Banner Day parades, and before the Grand Slam single, there was the "Hendu Can Do" grand slam - I was there. I've collected Mets memorabilia all my life and started Mets Merized Online to feed my addiction.

  • He was pitching like Strasburg in his ML debut. It’s the same effect. A hard thrower who the opposing team has never seen before.

As for starting with the Mets Saturday, I don’t doubt it will happen. Do I agree? No. I think he may be being rushed. But hey, that’s what the Mets love to do. Might as well get his Tommy Josh surgery out of the way now.

  • “Jenrry Mejia Hurls A Gem In AAA Debut” really Joe? He did?
WOw, that’s just great. Say, Joe how did Pat Misch do last night?

  • If you watched the highlights from last night, you would see that he was ‘dominating’ a bunch of smallish dudes in their early twenties. If he faces the Cubs on Saturday, my bet is he’ll be slapped around for 4ER in 3IP before Jerry yanks him for Elmer or Iggy.

    • Ok Francis its a bet! You say if Jenry M. pitches Saturday against the Cubs he will give up at least 4 earned runs before the 3rd inng.
I bet that if Menjia(sp) pitches Saturday against the Cubs he will not give up no more than 2 earned runs before the 3rd inng.
Care to put some money on it? $50.00. The loser could use an online money transfer service to send the money.
Francis just out of curiosity if Pat Misch pitched against the Cubs on Saturday how many runs would he give up before the 3rd inng?

      • Fifty bucks is way beyond my reach, and two runs in three innings is not really that good either.

If he gives up less than 3ER and pitches 5 IP or more, I’ll figure out a way to make sure you get credit for proving me wrong for all of MMO to see, I promise.

And if Misch pitched, he would probably do worse. I just hope if Jennry does ok, they keep him under 90 pitches. I don’t want a Strasburg situation on our hands. 100 pitches in AAA for a 20 year old is really too much.

        • I’m just teasing Francis, getting out my Met frustrations.
Thanks for being a good sport and playing along.

          • lifelong, I hope you can see by now that Mejia’s got a ways to go before those AAA gems translate to the bigs.

Fortunately, he’s stinking it up now. Otherwise mgmt would be saying that we don’t need a starter in 2011, despite Johan, becuase we have Jennry “Ubaldo3000″ Mejia in his place.

  • Here are the options for Misch’s next start: Misch makes the start (doesn’t deserve to), they recall Mejia to make the start, or flip Misch and Oliver Perez and allow Ollie one more start since he’s being treated “Unfairly” by the Mets. So, what’ll it be? :)

  • i doubt Mejia matched Strasburg’s potential (before Strasburg’s injury this past week), but he’s the best pitching prospect we’ve got. And it still peeves me, how the Mets put the kid through ‘mop-up’ bullpen work early in the season that caused the kid to pull up with a bum arm.
The MLB pen work and the injury put this kid back over half a season. It is sweet to see this potential ripening now. Let’s take it slow with him; he’s never pitched 100 innings in any professional season.
So, next year, he’ll have to be both on an innings and pitch count.

    • Amen to what Bob wrote.

  • I was there last night in Buffalo and he was awesome. My seats where in the pen ,in the middle middle of the mound and plate. It was fun to watch him warm up,what a talent. It will be interesting to see who is better,Strasburg or Mejia. lets give it say 10 years?? But for now in my eyes he is the best pitcher the Mets have had since Kazmir atleast. Mind you Niese is damn good also.

  • Might as well give Mejia the start. He’s to be called up anyway, and we’ve got nothing to lose. Plus, it’s the Cubs.

  • NOOoooo. Whay do the Mets do this. Leave him down let him rest and pitch him in the AFL. What good does it do to pitch him in this position. If he is stellar he doesn’t have enough time to really solfidify his spot in the rotation. If he stinks the plave up it ruins his trade value and messes up his confidence. The worst possibly situation is if he gets hurt then what. He’s already had a bought of shoulder weakness. Not a good idea.

  • Santana
    Pelfrey
    Niese
    Dickey
    Mejia

    2011 Rotation?

Along with that, I could definitely see Feliciano resigning, hopefully Cordero will be resigned because he’s been looking great in Buffalo and definitely deserves a shot at the 2011 pen. K-Rod either gets traded, has his contract voided and is released, or is back as the 2011 closer. Parnell should be given a shot as the set up man if Frankie is back. If not, he should be the closer.

  • aroldis chapman can outpitch mejia with his feet

    • Its interesting that u mention Chapman can pitch with his feet.I feel Niese should have pitched with his nose 2 night! It couldn’t hurt!
