Mets Trade Francoeur To The Texas Rangers
It’s Official, the Mets have traded rightfielder Jeff Francoeur to the Texas Rangers for infielder Joaquin Arias.
Arias turns 26 in three weeks and has a career .286 batting average in 242 plate appearances. He plays second base so we may see him log some extended playing time.
Good luck Frenchy. We wish you well, and have fun in the Post Season.
Earlier today, Adam Rubin reported that there’s at least a chance Jeff Francoeur could be spending his last day as a New York Met.
Two MLB sources told ESPNNewYork.com that the Texas Rangers are looking for a right-handed-hitting outfielder for the bench and are considering Francoeur.
“His name has definitely been talked about,” one source said.
The deal would need to be completed today for Frenchy to be eligible for the postseason roster.
Sounds like the planets are aligning for a celebration among saber-minded Mets fans who never had any use or anything good to say for the Mets rightfielder.

Somewhere, Martin is dancing on the ceiling lol.
It’s doubtful that we get anything relevant back for him.
My next question is who plays RF? Carter? Nick Evans? Someone else?
Yes martin is dancing on air. What about Duda?
Duda’s not coming up this year at all.
If Duda doent get placed on 40 man roster, Mets lose him in Rule 5. They wont risk that so if he gets placed on it, why not call him up? Especially with Bisons out of playoffs and him not chosen for AFL?
He’s not eligible for the Rule V draft. He only signed three years ago.
Adam Rubin said he was eligible for Rule 5 based on some technicality. I’ll try and find it and post a link.
Adam Rubin says a lot of things. Check the rules for players eligible for the draft on any site and they’re all the same.
I found the link where I gleaned that from.
http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/post?id=9195
You’ll see him mention it toward the bottom of his post.
He is eligible because he signed at 20 years old, and this is the end of his 4th season.
Selection eligibility
Players are eligible for selection in the Rule 5 draft who are not on their major league organization’s 40-man roster and:
- were signed at age 19 or older and have been in the organization for four years; or
- were signed at age 18 or younger and have been in the organization for five years.
The exemption periods were extended by one year in October 2006 as part of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. The change took effect immediately, exempting many players from the 2006 Rule 5 draft even though they had been signed in some cases more than four years before the new agreement came into effect. Prior to the rule change, players were exempt from the first two or three Rule 5 drafts held after their signing (regardless of the year they were drafted), rather than from the first three or four Rule 5 drafts after their signing.
“……were signed at age 19 or older and have been in the organization for four years; or”
June 2007 was three years, 2 months ago. He has another year.
Duda is eligible and will be exposed to Rule V if he’s not placed on the 40 man roster. The other places are wrong.
Right again X!
I’d like to see Duda, but I’m doubtful it’ll happen. He’s not on the 40 (although they could call him up since there may be an open spot).
That meeting between Manuel and Francoeur was about…wait for it…golf courses. Rumor fail. Still a chance though.
golf courses?? lol
They were talking about what golf course they were gonna meet up at during the offseason.
Hey guys, I don’t know if this helps but according to Jim Callis of Baseball America “Players who were 18 or younger on June 5 preceding the signing of their first contract must be protected after four minor league seasons. Players 19 and older must be protected after three seasons.”
http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/columnists/askbarule5.html
If Callis is right, then Duda would be eligible for Rule 5.
One more thing. I’m almost certain that Adam Rubin has covered the Mets minor leagues for Baseball America for about 4 years now. So I’m sure him and Callis are interpreting the rule the same way.
hard to believe simply because i dont think any other team would think francouer would be anything other than disastrous for their team.
Though he never put up the numbers we had expected, I still love Frenchy. He’s was always a favorite Met of mine. Good luck!
The French Revolution has cometh…and endeth.
*He was
A little background info on Joaquin Arias:
He was the throw-in in the A-Rod for Soriano trade years ago. Wikipedia has an interesting anecdote comparing him and Robby Cano, but I cannot verify it, so I won’t repeat it.
Arias is a contact hitter with a mediocre slash line, and less power than Tejada. Arias also draws fewer walks than Francoeur. Seriously.
This trade does add another warm body to play middle infield (he can play 2B and SS). I do not know what he is like defensively.
My Judgment: Garbage for garbage trade. Arias is not likely to stick in the majors past this year. He may still hang around the system though, as he makes league minimum, and is nowhere close to arbitration.
At this point, it really doesn’t matter what we got in the trade. We weren’t going to get anything of value, so grading this trade is irrelevant.
Not shocked by the move but I feel a very stupid move once again. Only saving grace is bringing in a manager next season with leadership since we lost our leadership with Frenchy. I wish him well and hope he kicks ass in Texas.
The Frenchman proved once again how smart Mr. Bobby Cox is!How are the Mets going to survive without their fearless leader? Heaven help us. Viva La France!!!!!!!!
The picture above brings back fond memories. The Frenchman swings at everything ,Cora cannot hit his weight, Castillo can’t field a ground ball and Brian S can’t hit or catch a straight fastball!A good subtitle would be Minayas 4 hobos.
I think this is one of Minaya’s better “small moves.” He tends to really get taken on these type of trades and this time I think he did the taking. This kid might never put anything together but He’s here and he has his uses. Frenchy was out the door at the end of a lost season, No draft picks no nothing just gone. Now Omar has turned him into a player that we can control for another year or two. he’s fast and undiscplined anything can happen but he at least has speed. So we have turned Milledge into this kid heck I don’t mind.
What is with all the bitching and moaning?? you traded a .230 hitter for a marginal prospect! it happens! stop being such a bunch a cynical pricks and see what happens, this season is a wash, look towards 2011…………
Trading Jeff Francouer means that the organization is thinking past this season and will assume that Jason Bay will come back to play left field with
Angel Pagan moving to right field. It will be hard to trade Carlos Beltran even if they want to until he proves that he is completely healed and has not “lost a step”. If Arias is better than a decent defensive player then the trade is fine. Unfortunately, Ruben Tejada has shown almost no ability to hit major league pitching while Arias seems to have shown a better bat. Either way we have to lose Luis Castillo during the off season. Besides his lack of production due to age and injury…he is snake bitten in NY
Bottom line is Beltran cant limp around the outfield and hit 215 with no power for ever and still play. The Mets have to be nervous as he is not improving much after 140 at bats.
