Nine weeks into the season already? I can’t believe it myself. In random baseball news, Armando Galarraga threw only about the 390,000th non-perfect game in major league baseball, nothing special. John Maine is on the DL with a weak shoulder and now Perez because his knee hurts. Uh…no comment. At least he’s not taking up a roster spot anymore. We saw the return of Niese for a strong start and the sweep of the Marlins. A lot to choose from this week…
My choice for MetsMerized Player of The Week is…David Wright!
Surprised? Actually, David pretty much made the choice for me this week. A lot of us, myself included, bash on Wright for the fact that he may not be the guy you want up in clutch situations, and I feel that’s justifiable. However, the talk about trading Wright and all that is ridiculous because he still is the cornerstone of this franchise and still plays the heck outta third base overall, putting himself among the top 3B in the MLB.
On the week, Wright posted a .500 average on the week (11-22 ; 2 HR) .500/.577/.773 slash, which was team leading. His 11 hits along with his 4 BB, 2 SB with 0 CS, 6 Runs and 17 TB were all team leading. He drove in 5 on the week, second only to Frenchy’s 6. One of the best numbers, though, is that he only struck out 4 times in 22 AB, which to be honest isn’t spectacular, but it’s definitely better than his recent numbers.
Add in the fact that David didn’t make an error, and you get the Wright stuff all week. It was a great statistical week for Wright and we can only hope it means things will be looking up for the rest of the season. I do worry about the after effects of that concussion, because I’ve noticed him backing off the plate on pitches that aren’t that close to him…Maybe I’m just overthinking, hm? Congratulations to David Wright!

Of Note 5/31-6/7
Check it out, Jon Niese came back for a great start against the Marlins and won his first career game at Citi Field. Integral part of the Mets sweep, along with Jeff Francoeur looking really hot at the plate lately.
Barajas slammed another HR, giving him 11 HR and 30 RBI. All-star numbers, of course, don’t expect him to make the game.
As R.A. Dickey continues to show moderate success as he goes hard every time out there, Takahashi is looking a little rattled on the mound lately.
Nice to see Ruben Tejada up and I hear Jesus Feliciano is soon to follow.
In case you didn’t see the amazing graphic Kelly made or the posts, the Mets drafted Matt Harvey with the 7th pick of the 2010 MLB Draft. He was not as highly touted as some other prospects and I can’t help but worry. A lot.
No matter what, I’m still cheering for these Mets, though. We take on the Padres and the Orioles this week? We can do this. Just tell the Mets they play at Citi Field every day and tell Bay that he’s hitting off Sabathia every day. LGM!
