Nelson Figueroa DFA’d – Mets Fans Rejoice?

In a report to MLB Trade Rumors, Tim Dierkes posted of Nelson Figueroa’s release:
The Phillies designated pitcher Nelson Figueroa for assignment to make room for Brad Lidge, tweets MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki. Figueroa, 36, was claimed off waivers from the Mets on April 7th and tallied nine games for the Phils.
Last year for the Mets Figueroa compiled a 4.09 ERA, 7.5 K/9, and 3.1 BB/9 in 70.3 innings. Figueroa has spent most of his second career Phillies stint in the bullpen, and the strikeouts disappeared.
Is this coincidence, or did the Mets have some sort of foresight into the situation?
I don’t wish the downfall of the man, but Figueroa going to the Phillies is like dating your ex-girlfriend’s best friend just for spite.
I guess you can go to Japan now Figgy.

You know what’s ironic, there was a firestorm on this site when he was let go and subsequently picked up by the Phillies, and now that’s he’s a going to be a FA, there’s no real need to pick him up.
We’ve adequately replaced him with the combination of Takahashi, Dickey, and Valdez.
Even after the comments that he made, I still want him to do well, somewhere. I’m not sure who, if anyone would pick him up, so he probably will go to Japan.
Nelson Figueroa has the heart of a lion, and the talent of a journeyman. Enough said. We all liked the ‘local boy makes good’ scenario’s and I myself, appreciated the 70 innings he threw for us last year, but he’s a journeyman. Nothing less nothing more. The Mets had players with more talent to replace him.
A journeyman is more than we can say of Ollie Perez. I’d rather have Nelson and the $11 million a season savings than Ollie the oaf.
Just venting, but give me a guy who gives his ‘all’ any day over a stumblebum who doesn’t appreciate the opportunity the Mets gave him. The stumblebum didn’t perform as well as Figgy and is a pariah and a performance drag on the team.
I mean no offense but why does Nelson Figueroa have the “heart of a lion”? I agree on the talent part, but what has he ever done to warrant that kind of praise? I just hope that the mets do not pick him up. After what he said they shouldn’t, Lesson for GM 101: when guys get DFA’d, let them fade away. A team has completely given up on a guy for a reason, usually because he totally stinks.
I say ‘Heart of a Lion’ because theguy had numerous arm injuries when he was young and was a trueprospect, but battled back from those injuries continuously and never gave up on his dream. he now has journeymans talent but keeps chasing his dream.
Rather have him than Perez…
who cares? i am not happy that figueroa was DFA because he sucked for the phillies.
We’ll then, maybe the Mets can take notes on what to do with players who are under performing horribly.

Nelson Figueroa has been a hard working journeyman pitcher doing well in the minor leagues with some moderate at best major league service. The Mets released him because they felt they had better candidates for the type of work he provides….
Yes, he should have said nothing about his release by the Mets…but Mets fans should not be upset that he signed with the enemy. It is business and the fans should understand this.
I am more concerned with the stink from the Ollie Perez fiasco.
Fans should be screaming for his release and hanging him in effigy outside CITI FIELD!
Alan, I would never condone a …but if you were to hang ollie in effigy outside of Citi Freddye Wilpon would see 20+ million and possibly hurt himself trying to climb up to grab it.
