Now Batting Sixth, Number 29, First Baseman Ike Davis

According to Matt Cerrone of MetsBlog, Ike Davis will be wearing uniform number 29 when he takes the field for tonight’s Major League debut against the Chicago Cubs at Citi Field.
Over the years, the Mets have had many great players who donned number 29, including one of my favorite Mets of all time, Dave Magadan.
Other notables include: Danny Frisella, Mickey Lolich, Frank Viola, Masato Yoshii, Octavio Dotel and Steve Trachsel.
Oddly enough, Tobi Stoner wore number 29 while pitching in yesterday’s game against the Cardinals, and was sent back to Buffalo to make room for our new first baseman.
The Mets 4-8 start has given me a somber mood to start the season where the Mets are concerned, but today it feels like Opening Day all over again.
Here is the lineup for tonight’s game:
- Angel Pagan CF
- Luis Castillo 2B
- David Wright 3B
- Jason Bay LF
- Jeff Francoeur RF
- Ike Davis 1B
- Rod Barajas C
- Alex Cora SS
- Jon Niese P
Lets Go Mets!

Haaa, and we all thought that the mets organization and pr people were stupid.. on the verge of another series loss they call up ike davis to actually bring ppl to the stadium knowing not many will show up to watch an unispired, underachieving, pathetic team at the stadium rates they got.. now, ppl will show up to watch an unispired, underachieving and pathetic team becoz ike davis is here.. very smart mets PR.. very smart..
Been reading your posts for a long time alex. You must be loving Omar’s 1 out of 3 games policy..lol
Gdfather412
Lol, to be honest, I was sooo shocked at the fact HE said that I didn’t even post anything.. he’s pretty much wanting to get fired, he knows he’ll be set, he’s gonna get pay for 3 years, chilling, lay back drinking cerveza and enjoying how he destroy the new york mets..
Its bad that I wasn’t shocked when Omar said that..lol I think Omar is starting to throw Jerry under a bus: According to Minaya, Davis is going to play, “and I talked to Jerry about that,” because, “You’re not going to bring up a kid like that to platoon.”
Not that I am un-happy he told Jerry but lets see if Jerry listens.
Why are you a Mets fan?
Franco:
Not sure if that was directed to me or not, but to answer your question if it was to me..
What do you care??? Thank you..
I care because I’m sick of reading your BS, you know little to nothing, but yet pollute this site with your pontificated mouth.
Why not removed some stress from your life and go join another bandwagon.
If is BS why u read it or write back?? I’m sure ur one of those optimistic guys who still thinks this team is good enough to win the way is contructed by our genious gm..
If u don’t like my post skip to the next one instead of trying to create a name for urself..
I respect my opinion and I respect yours, everyone is happy..
Nice lineup and I can understand why Reyes is not in there but Jerry is on the right track with this lineup. Just don’t want to see Cora starting anymore although I don’t despise him as much as i used to after that dive into the stands.
What happens to Daniel Murphy when he comes back?
I would like to see Murph become a super sub unless Ike is really, really bad. Gina I have been following your comments as well on here and other sites for awhile as well.
Cool I’ve never had my own stalker before, ha ha ha. Seriously though, I wouldnt mind seeing Murph become a solid utility type player, but shouldnt he learn to play the other infield positions in the minors first?
I have been reading these blogs for years now so you get to know who has something to say and who has insight into the team and the game. I think Murph will practice and be as prepared as possible to be a sub. It wouldnt surprise me at all to see him get some time in the minors but his bat will be needed for our bench. The bench has not been an asset so far.
Im heading to class now guys. Lets GO Mets and Lets Go Ike.
The same thing that will happen to either reyes, wright or beltran this season.. get traded..
I can definitely see the core broken up with at least one getting traded. I don’t see Wright getting traded for anyone and I would have said the same about Reyes but I can see it happening now if the deal was special.
crazy, paying beltran 18million is an easy chore for all baseball teams. and wright and reyes are such awful players..i mean…
The Nick evans treatment just happened for him. He will never sniff the majors ever again.
That is if Ike Davis is cracked up to be all that the mets have hyping him to be.
I don’t like this move ; I’m in the minority right now.
I’m concerned too. It may mean the Mets are panicking. I want to know what their 30 and 6o day plans are. Do they have any?
I like that startint lineup today. Pagan has been playin well. I can’t wait to se I ke Davis play! Even if he goes 1 for 5 it’d be an improvewment over Jacob, especially defensively.
Let’s hope this is the first REAL star to wear #29. To think Dave Magadan or Frank Viola (as a Met) are the best to wear it, isn’t saying much. Let’s hope Ike Davis stays a lot longer and makes a MUCH bigger splash than any previous #29.
IT’S ABOUT TIME!!! WFAN is reporting that a few veterans felt he should have come north with the team to begin with!
Phil — I’m one guy who thinks the Mets pay too much attention to the opinions of some of their players. It burned my buns the other night when Frankie R., in the 19th inning, told the pitching coach that he wanted to pitch to Molina. Molina then knocked in the tying run. Frankie should have been told who to pitch to, not given the option unless he had a compelling reason. What are the on-field coaches for? It should not be to take orders from the players, some of whom are not playing too well.
