Mets Kicking The Tires On Cristian Guzman
In a sign that Mets shortstop Jose Reyes might be out closer to eight weeks rather than two weeks, the Mets are reportedly looking at Cristian Guzman as a possible temporary replacement.
Rich Coutinho of ESPN reported via Twitter,
The Mets may be looking for another SS since Reyes could be out a few weeks- I am hearing the name Cristian Guzman has been discussed.
I like Guzman and he’d be an obvious upgrade over both Ruben Tejada or Alex Cora, but of course it all depends on what the Mets would have to give up to get him from the Nationals.
Guzman hit .284 with six home runs, 74 runs and 52 RBI for the Nats last season, but made 20 errors at shortstop in 135 games. However, he gets to many more balls than Alex Cora who doesn’t have good range.

Why not let Tejada see if he is ready?? If not trade Santos and Evans to K.C for Mike Aviles!!!
I read today that KC is playing Aviles at 2B because his arm still isn’t rehabbed enough for him to be able to make the throw to first from short. FYI.
I know the k.c gm is dumb, but he’s not omar minaya dumb.. he’s not gonna give up aviles for crap.. and guzman I like if we dump castillo to them on a salary swap, but they got smart and sign kenndy at 2B and that kid ian desmond is most likely the opening day SS, so getting rid of guzman is gonna be a salary dump, and I don’t think mngment is gonna open up the wallet again to minaya so he can do more atrocious trade, can u imagine having guzman at 8 million, castillo at 6 million and cora at 2 million for only 1 spot!!? If this happens I will personally change my screen name everywhere I blog to fire minaya right now.com!!!!!
Alex, I truly doubt the veracity of this rumor as ESPN typically assumes a lot esp re NYM. These unnamed source tweats from twits could easily be sourced by a couple of Citi janitors. While the author pointed out Guzman’s better range over Cora’s, my immediate thought went to those errors & how rediculous greater range is when u boot it.
I’m very old scoolish in prefering less range, surer hands & more putouts; but that’s just me.
I like Steve’s idea for the trade…but don’t we still have Anderson Hernandez?
When I hear rumors like this, I start to worry that Reyes will be out much longer than the window given. I mean your going to spend how much on Guzman? then have him ride the bench when Jose returns? Something smells fishy in Mudville.
Just play the kid, we’ve got greater concerns with our starting pitching.
if we looking a guzman we certailnly getting ready to somehow move castillo, there’s too much monwey to be made for 3 infielders with only position really available..
Pointless trade! Completely unnecessary and will not improve the club in any significant way. At best it will reduce funds that could be used at the deadline to fill more important holes
Didn’t the Mets give ALEX CORA $2M expressly for this reason?
Felipe Lopez is getting $1M this year.
(sigh)
Forget Guzman! If I was Omar, I would make a play for Mike Aviles & Alberto Callaspo. I would deal Gary Matthews Jr, Alex Cora, Elmer Dessens, and a prospect for Aviles and Callaspo.
GMJ is a significant upgrade over Ankiel, Cora is better than Betancourt defensively, and Dessens could help their pen. Makes sense all around.
